Title: ChinnyVision: Commando
Post by: chinnyhill10 on 11:50, 22 April 16
OK on the CPC it doesn't hold up well against Ikari Warriors but it's not awful. Just a shame about the sprite flickering:

And as you can see, it could have been so much worse! Just look at the BBC and Electron versions!

Oh man, this brings back some memories! I used to play Commando to death and that music is embedded in my brain. Love it! I never noticed the flickering at the time, to be honest. It was a great game for its time.

Edit: With regard to your "boss rush" comment on the Electron version, that didn't look like a boss rush to me. It's more like a Beggar Horde; which is where a lot of 1-hitpoint mooks rush you en masse.

The C64 version is very nice, cool music and you can't beat hardware scrolling and hardware sprites really.

You didn't mention how you could use the second button to throw grenades on the CPC. In my opinion it just improves gameplay, so much that your strategy for some areas are different as you can blast and throw grenades at the same time instead of waiting one second without shooting for your grenade to launch. I'm ok with some sprite flickering (growing up with consoles with hardware sprites that flicker when more than eight are on screen), but that road area is terrible I agree.

Also I disagree on Ikari Warriors being better. It's prettier sure, but the game is just slow and boring, the enemies barely react to you. And about the gameplay, the diagonal shooting is so angled it's almost useless, and of course no second button. But it has a two player mode, and that's cool.

Amstrad version plays great ,and I'd much rather have it over the 3 level c64 version , which you complete in a blink of the eye , The vehicle sprites are stupid too . Amstrad has a good difficulty setting too not too easy and not to challenging , the only let down is the poor graphics imo

This really shows up the BBC. I'm sure they could have done better, I know its not a great machine for games but there are some good, playable games on the BBC.

CPC version wasn't too garish but the flickery sprites reminded me of my own games. Even I would draw the line at the runway section though.

I always liked the speccy version, but after playing the CPC a lot it felt too difficult (moves slightly faster than the CPC one; or may be it is my memories of it).

I liked playing the CPC version back in the day (in a monochrome screen!), I think it was alright. I gave it a go this evening and I think it stands pretty well. IMHO.

BBC had plenty of decent games , when it was sticking to it's capabilities , the advent of Coin op conversions was no go area for BBC , which can also be said for the Amstrad to a lesser degree.

Apart from Arkanoid, Crystal Castles, Pole Position, etc, etc.

those were manageable coin ops , they had plenty good ones from that early era

But post '86 the big software houses are quickly dropping support for the Beeb and therefore there aren't official arcade conversions to the system. None of the Sega System 16 games made it for example. On the one hand you are saying that there are are poor quality arcade conversions to the BBC Micro, whereas the reality suggests the software houses who had the licenses didn't even bother.

Yeah I liked Commando too, you could see that this was essentially the building blocks for Ikari Warriors (which came out about 6-8 months later on the CPC).

Ridiculously fast paced I found too, I doubt I made it off the third stage on this one as well.
Once you got Ikari Warriors though, it was rare you'd come back for Commando.

Also Who Dares Wins II is worth a mention.

Commando is a top game on the Amstrad , Ikari is also a great game but the pacing of commando is far quicker and give me a far different experience to Ikari , I return to Commando far more than I do Ikari . It's great for a quick blast. Who Dares Wins is a great game too and I loved that massively and still do , even though it is flick screen it still is fantastic game to tackle

Happily Who Dares Wins II was mentioned, but only in the previous 2 posts!

It  compares more with Commando than Ikari. Ikari rocks because you can wade through the water and steal tanks and blow buildings up  :D

Just watched Dan Warrens vid of the C64 Elite version of Commando CPC version blows it out of the water , 3 levels and it loops, man I would have been annoyed if  I had been fobbed off with that version despite its nicer graphics.

Loved it on my 464, despite some of its technical shortcomings. I found it very difficult, but I kept coming back to it!

I remember it taking ages to load; I had it on a 40-minute tape (ahem...), and I would start loading it, go round the neighborhood for groceries and stuff and then come back to play it :D

That was a basic loader though, there was a technique that allowed you to load and save back out with a faster speed load.
Worked for me for most of Elite's loaders.  ;D
