Title: GameHammer - Laserwarp and Dizzy playthrough/reviews
Post by: Zoe Robinson on 17:17, 04 July 15

Hi guys,

It's been a while since I was properly active on here because of work issues but in my free time I've been developing a new retro gaming show on YouTube, so I thought I'd link them here so you can all see how terrible I am at gaming. Both are on the CPC, although later episodes will also feature other systems as well as the beloved Amstrad range.

Episode 1 was Laserwarp, because it's a game I played to death as a kid.

Episode 2 was Dizzy, the original one, because it's Dizzy and he rocks.

Hope you like them - and if you don't, I hope you find them not too terrible. :D

The final boss is so unfair. Not only is he hidden behind a shield that takes multiple shots just to make a small hole in it but the hole disappears if you die (and you will). I've never met anyone who can defeat that final level.

I know the one you mean too. What I thought was unfair, was in one part of your video, you died and when you came back, you died again from a stray lazer bolt. So no few seconds of immunity just to move out of danger.  :o  The 2nd stage was nasty in the way those bricks followed your ship too.
But the game has some nice colourful graphics and I couldn't even flaw the animation, though no background to worry about.

It's funny how the value of certain games depend on the memories you have. I'm sure anyone seeing Laserwarp for the first time today would think it's very poor, but I think it's awesome, mostly probably because of the memories I've attached to it.

Nice videos. The original Dizzy does have a bit of a learning curve, but the trick is to start off getting the objects like Bird Seed and the Raincoat, which let you kill off the various bad guys by jumping into them, rather than necessarily following a walkthrough solution that tries to get through the game as quickly as possible. Once you've killed off some of the really annoyingly unfair creatures (like the bat you kept dying on) it's a lot easier to play through.

To be honest, I didn't even notice that while playing the game. I don't know whether that's because I've played it for so many years or because it wasn't a big problem while playing except for that one occasion but it doesn't really detract too much fro the experience.

Yes, the animations on it are lovely. It's a really nice, colourful game. It's just a shame that if you manage to get to the final level, the boss is so ridiculously hard to reach.

I am no expert gamer, but I have beaten the master several times. I do not remember if I have beaten him several times in the same game though. The first two games we got for our CPC 464 was Laserwarp and Spannerman so we clocked many hours playing these games. Have anyone got to a second level in Spannerman? I never managed to do that...

There's a second level in Spannerman?  :o  I played that game until the water got to the top of the screen, at least I think I did and my Air Supply ran out, so I didn't think there was a 2nd level.

I am firmly of the opinion that the second level of Spannerman is like the Cow Level of Diablo; a myth.

Yes its funny how these myths come about! I remember having Spannerman as one of the first games I had on Xmas day 84 along with my CPC464, Not too bad of a game , but the gameplay is flawed in the fact that there is no difference in how much water fills up. I think the game would be very much more appealing if you  were rewarded for stopping the leaks , by slowing the waters progression.I feel It needs that to give you a sense of fulfilment within the game, if you catch my drift. It would be great if someone could implement this dinamic into the game-hint hint.
Laserwarp wasn't a game I ever had as a kid , but I thought it looked alright for an early title, nice bold graphics, preferred it too Galactic plague though.
I think Laserwarp is another example of the Amstrad's continual use of oversized sprites ,in shoot em ups. Really annoys me , lots of nice shooters but proportion's don't add up too proper quality shooters.
Defend or Die was not in this category, and showed how arcade conversions could be done.

Yeah, the CPC does love its enormous sprites. It makes for a bold, eye-catching game though, so in this instance I actually rather like it.

By the way, there's a new episode up today. This time I'm taking a look at Mastertronic's ridiculously-addictive Ball Crazy; on both the beloved CPC and the ZX Spectrum.

For my part, I'm a big fan of Ball Crazy. It's a fun game and, as I say in the video, I'd really like to see an updated version for smartphones. I think it would be really popular.

You're not the first to tell me this, oddly enough. I'm surprised given how well it scored in reviews that more people haven't come across this little gem of a game before. Personally, I love it.

Yes it's lots of fun playing it. Maybe the problem is that there is no DSK of it?

No .dsk of it? There's one on ftp.nvg.unit.no:

ftp.nvg.unit.no/pub/cpc/games/arcade/ballcraz.zip (http://ftp://ftp.nvg.unit.no/pub/cpc/games/arcade/ballcraz.zip)

Oh could you - or somebody else - please post it here (works only as ZIP, not as DSK), because I can't access nvg from our network. Sorry!  :-\

The same DSK file is available on CPC-POWER (http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&onglet=dumps&num=361) as well. Do you have access to CPC-POWER on your network?

Thanks. I didn't see it the first time. My bad. I could tell them to give the way free to CPC-Power a couple of month ago, but it suxx to tell PC-people (adnins) why I need access to CPC related things for genetics, while they got no idea about a Z80.  ;D

Nice video, I enjoyed it  :D

I hadn't heard of Ball Crazy either.

Anyway, I've just converted it to cpr, so people can play it on the GX4000 if they want.  ;D

Seriously, what is it with people asking for a file when there's a Downloads button just above?

Anyhow, ahem. Great videos, Zoe, thanks for sharing :) For a second there I thought it was Twitch I was watching :D
