Review and longplay / walkthrough for "California Games" on the Amstrad CPC! This is going to be the last of the multi-event sport games I'm going to do for a lonnnnng time! Frankly, I'm sick and tired of them now!! Well I saved an interesting one to last - the famous and very popular California Games! At least on the C64 which was the original and by far the best out of the 8-bit conversions... this is another typical Epyx game on the Amstrad... bare-bones presentation, no real goal except to beat world records - unless you're playing against friends. I wouldn't say this was an 'expert' playthrough, but enough to demonstrate everything - such as the important moves on the bizarre 'foot bag' event! Overall with the presentation and graphics this conversion doesn't give the bright and sunny feeling of California at all... (c) Epyx / US Gold 1987 cpc-power.com en.wikipedia.org[/t]

Foot bag? This must have been some kind of joke, surely?

And that freesbie event, could it *be* more boring and action-free? :D

footbag was a quite popular game in the 90's. You had to juggle with a small leither ball

Anyway, i think that for most peoples, California Games will stay an Atary Lynx Game, and will be only reminded for the surfing part.

That last sentence was right on the nail; I think it's the same photo from the magazines that everyone has in their mind - a Lynx showing off with the surfing game.

No, YOU are talking about teabagging... :D

California games was nice on Atari Lynx too, and Sega Master System too...

Some events were re-done for World of Sport on GX4000... Sadly it wasn't as good nor featured that many events...

Those sort of games always had a lot of raster and multimode effects.

Ah, California Games.

I didn't get my mits on this one until a few years after my C64 owning school friends wouldn't shut up raving about it.

I think it was late 89 or early 90 when i got it as part of the Giants compilation (California Games, Rolling Thunder, 720 degrees, Outrun and Gauntlet II), looking back that was a giant set of turkeys in one box. Two of those games had either crap sound or no sound, with it's soundtrack on tape (on individual releases, can't remember if the compilation had them), the only really good game out of that bunch was Gauntlet II.

Anyway, California Games ended up being such a disappointment. Took me a while to get the surfing right, hackey sack was dull,  and i think i wanted to cry when i tried the half pipe. At the time, Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'" video was doing heavy rotation on MTV, and i'm thinking "Yeah, i can pull a move on that on California games!", but when your skater acts like they have arthritis, it's a painful experience and a half.
