[AMSTRAD CPC] Super Cauldron - Longplay & Review (Part 1 - World 1)
31 October 2011, 1:45 am

More halloween hijinx! With the sequel and update to the classic Cauldron games from Palace Software ... SUPER CAULDRON! This is one of the best looking and highest rated games on the Amstrad (the magazine Amstrad Action gave it 96%!) and Elmar Krieger - he of Prehistorik II fame - has pulled it off again! A truly superb game, although perhaps a little over difficult and frustrating... Which is part of the reason this video is not a full longplay - this is just the 1st World, the next 3 worlds will follow over time! A very tricky game with lots of areas to explore and find - I've been meaning to do this for a very very long time but got fed up and forgot all about it! Plus there's issues with sound emulation, causing very nasty sound corruption which is painful to the ears - I eventually gave up! HOWEVER seeing as it's Halloween, I've decided to return to it and at least start with the first level! Sure there were sound issues again, but I've taken time to do a few edits to get through this without them thankfully appearing in the final video. Hope you guys will look forward to the next levels and parts! Oh and the Amstrad was the only 8-bit to get a version of this game! Woo! hehe! PC and Amiga versions are OK, but this version is more impressive relative to the hardware it's running on :) (c) Titus 1993 cpc-power.com www.cpcwiki.eu en.wikipedia.org

This is what JimPower should have looked like...

Sadly they got no PLUS version on this one (in opposition to Prehistorik2).

Oooh, thanks for this video, the game was so demanding I was always getting frustrated while playing it  :P

A little sidenote, thought. Elmar Krieger, or Elmsoft as he was known in the ranks of the CPC demoscene, didn't only make Super Cauldron and Prehi II with Titus. He's also the developer behind Zap' t' Balls (the short edition which was published via a german paper-mag - was it CPC International, anyone?), Zap' t' Balls The Advenced Edition (both ZtBs are essentially clones of Pang), he made an unreleased game called Cyborgs Blast (or something like that) which was kind of a side-scroller-puzzle-shooter (he showed me himself a few hundrend years ago, lol) and finally he has made an adaptation of the C64 game Space Taxi for the CPC, which is a rather simplistic game but for some reason I used to play his version like hell.

Aditionally he has made a game for the Gameboy, Prehistorik Man, which is actually an adaptation of Prehi II. He was really prowd when showing me how big the sprites were compared to Gameboy's Super Mario  :D 8)

...and perhaps he's made something else in the game's side that I don't know about  :P

By the time this came out, I was having to send off international money orders to UK mail order companies I picked out of the several months behind latest issue of AA and hoping I got something back.  This is one of the 3 games I got that way, and while I really loved the technical side of the game, I could not get *anywhere* in the damn thing!  :(  I was happy to have got it just to see something show what could be done though!  :D

You can add my name to that! I couldn't get anywhere in this game either, but I was quite good at CAULDRON (never finished it, though). CAULDRON 2 was just too fiddly to get the timing of the bounces right!

Yea and I struggled with this one too, hence why I'm doing it in parts as I couldn't find the patience to try and do it all in one go! One level at a time ... nice to see people are getting excited about part 2 from the YouTube comments and message sent :)

And sorry yes, I did know of the other games Elmar did - why I didn't mention Zap T'Balls I don't know! Cyborgs was unfinshed and Space Taxi just a PD release so didn't mention them.

Supercauldron is quite impressive as it even features "animated tiles" for the background...

plants or water... that was so uncommon on the Amstrad.

It seems to manage some decent level of smoothness because many sprites are actually quite small...
