This is one of my favorite racing games on CPC. I think it's a little bit underrated sometimes (it gets only a 7 at CPC game reviews while the very slow choppy Nigel Mansel takes 8 (oh even Lotus with 10, wat? ))
It might have mode 1 gfx, but the animations are amazing and the speed is quite good compared to most choppy CPC racing games. Music and sound fx are also really good.
And besides the good tech, I also think it plays pretty well.

I have seen Burning Rubber that was possibly done by the same team?
But I notice again that Wec Le Mans seems a bit more fast and more responsive. I would have thought that if they ported the game to CPC+ and also used the hw sprites and other stuff to speed up, it should be even faster. But maybe not, maybe it's a rewrite or there are more stuff on screen?

Many of Nich's criticisms have made me want to bang my head off a brick wall at times. I do think 7 was a little on the low side for that game, but he was right with the colour scheme being drab. the blues and greens were awful, reds and oranges would have probably worked better and would have a similar result only more pleasant. I'd have given it more of an 8 on his ratings. My gripe was more the fact that it was only the one track, but that's the arcade for you.

Even if they had have been able to change the colour scheme every time you did a lap, it would have made it a lot more pleasant. I reviewed this game way back in 2001, and looking back, even my marking was probably a little on the low side. I gave it a 79%, it was probably more deserving of 84%

I dunno.  I liked the colour scheme on this game cos it made it look somewhat realistic for Mode 1 and it makes sense.

Mode 1 can have many 4 colour schemes though, much more capable than what WEC churned out. Look at Midnight Resistance, That was fine for Mode 1.

The game is a little dingy, let's be honest. Realistic, but dingy. At least some attempt was made to make it look more interesting by using a couple of palette changes.  And gameplay was the most important thing. Personally I think the MODE 0 racing games made the right choice.

WEC Le Mans was also my favourite racing game for the CPC. (Not to say that I tried every other racing game there was though).

The few colours was disappointing. But let's not forget what the NES and the C64 has taught us:

Graphics generally doesn't really matter.

I know that may sound harsh to any graphics artist, but the stats don't lie.

What really makes a game interesting is the smooth movement and the awesome music to set the mood. The graphics don't matter. Only the gameplay matters. The NES and C64 proves this over and over.

And WEC Le Mans for the CPC definitely had the amazingly awesome music + one of the smoothest movement for racing games on the CPC. And that's why it was my favourite racing game.

Mode 0 race games have also been known to drop the ball. Outrun is the obvious, but I also didn't see what AA saw in Power Drift either! It looked blocky and crude as hell.

And yeah, pretty much anything Jonathan Dunn was involved with music wise, was pretty awesome.

I have a soft spot for this one, since i had bought the original back then. Still love it, though I wouldn't dare trying to play it all the way to the end!

Great review, mate, really enjoyed it. Since I got a Chromecast I play everything on my TV, much better than whatever the TV channels have to offer!
