Title: PCWwiki
Post by: jevicac on 09:58, 27 February 20
Hello to all users of the Amstrad PCW. We are preserving all possible material from this computer. Games, programs, software, hardware, etc. We need all possible help. For now, we leave you an updated list of games of what we have preserved. If you want to collaborate, get in touch with us. Greetings.

It's great to have a wiki in country specific languages. For example: There is an German Wiki for the CPC too. - But this was done after the Wiki in the World language English.

So the PcW wiki is nice for the Spanish users, but useless for anybody else.  :(

IMHO it would be great to establish an English PcW Wiki first. This would boost the number of people being able to contribute by an order of magnitude or so.  :)

Maybe try this : http://www.habisoft.com/pcwwiki/doku.php?id=en:start (http://www.habisoft.com/pcwwiki/doku.php?id=en:start)  ;)
Don´t know if it´s an auto translation but it works really well  :D

The good is that wiki seems to be related to Habi, a spanish great PCW master...

Just check "PCW in color" and you'll see the magic (CPM/Box, Pacmania, La Abadia del Crimen and other are also famous).

The wiki has also translations in English, German and French so it's easy for a non Spanish speaking person to understand.

Spain had great game developers for CPCs and PCWs back in time, and I personally had lot of games for my PCW from Opera Soft and OMK.

¡ Muchas gracias por eso trabajo increible !

Hello again, we are slowly translating the PCWwiki, Spanish, English, German and French. We need collaborators and translators. It is a lot of work that is done. In principle we are three users who maintain the PCWwiki, among which HabiSoft, one of the best teachers and connoisseur of the PCW, author of several works for this machine. Robcfg, another great teacher of the PCW and I "Jevicac". So if you dare, it would be extraordinary despite preserving material, having it in several languages with possible extension to others. Many of our material is collected on other websites, we only ask that our site be mentioned. All our material has an identification filter. Thank you all for your collaboration and revive the PCW.

Ah, that's the English skeleton. Good start, but nearly nothing in sadly. Hope that people will focus on this and contribute.

Well, that's a trap. There are (and this is true for CPC as for the PcW) few people doing software and/or hardware. The majority is not creating anything. Now if somebody like Habi has to care in addition about the Wiki, then he lacks time doing real PcW work (hardware f.e.).
So it would be great if people who actually don't code or make hardware would care about the Wiki. Because anybody can write a text. Also there are experts out there, who could have the time to write a Wiki page, but maybe not to create a new soft/hardware project.
But sadly it's (again true for PcW and CPC world) usually the same small bunch of guys doing all the work.  ::)

I can only encourage everybody to add to the English section of the PcW wiki!  :) :) :)

Thanks. Well, I do what I can, but usually this is software. Of course stuff like manuals (or whatever else I produce) will get put to the corresponding wikis.

EDIT: The succession of the posts seem to have been mixed up.  ???

I emailed pcwwiki@gmail.com in November, offering the originals of my PCB scans for the Multilink network card (https://www.seasip.info/VintagePC/multilink.html) and the Silicon City autoswitch 3.5in drive (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/nc100-nc200-pcw-pda600/silicon-city-autoswitch-3-5'-drive/), but never got an answer. Hi John, first apologize. We were very involved with the work and spent little time on PCWwiki. The email was diverted to the Amstrad website and we had no access. Robcfg has already solved it. If you can, send the mail again, we will be very grateful for your collaboration. Regards

I have maybe 100 - 150 PCW magazines in boxes in the "Amstrad cupboard(s) from Hell" - mostly 8000 Plus/PCW Plus with (I think) a few of CWTA(?) - if any are missing/not archived let me know and I'll see if I have them.

When you can verify it and let us know, we will be very grateful. The 8000 Plus and PCW Plus we have complete in the absence of poster, discs or any manual that was attached.

Hello,

Just tried the DEMOLER game, on Joyce.

It's WAY too fast, for me anyway, and the paddle moves between top and bottom and seems to have no control for anything between.

BUT, very impressive, very well done technically.

I'd guess it may work better on my real PCW, but it's an 'extended' image and the progs I have to write an image to disk on the PCW don't handle extended.

Thanks anyway.

Geoff

Just made this account to ask about the PCW range of word processors, I work for a charity and we've recently had a really good condition Amstrad PCW16 donated to us for us to sell for fundraising, doing research into the PCW16 it seems as though it isn't particularly a good model in terms of the hobby, however the keyboard, user manual and recovery floppy are all in mint condition and so I'm posting on here to ask what would the best course of action be for selling this machine? All costs would go towards the charity i'm working for and any help would be greatly appreciated from myself.
Sorry if this post is being made in the wrong thread or something also, though judging from the OP this seems at least partially related to my question.

A few days ago we published the new emulator for Amstrad PCW, and today a new game converted by Habisoft from CPC to PCW of the famous Knight Lore. This version when starting allows two options of monochrome and color game. If we have color activated in the new emulator, we can play with the same colors as the cpc version and if we activate the DK'Tronics sound interface, then a complete game. Hope you enjoy it.

Hello,

For information, I have a copy of Head Coach v3, except it's not a pukka version.

The reason for this - I was actually involved in the conversion of this game from the BBC original to the PCW, I extracted the BASIC code from a BBC disk and did the initial conversion to Mallard BASIC, Colin Adams then did the rest of the work, and I think I did some playtesting of the final version.   So I have the prog/data files for the finished product, but never on a 3" disk, but I could put it onto a 3" disk if needed.   I do however have a proper final manual/play book, which is in mint condition.

I'd guess that you'd rather 'archive' a proper version?

As I said before, the (maybe) big problem is that I'm not sure that the files that I've got are complete, or if they are complete, that they're in the original condition.   When your copy is available, I'll get the file to compare everything.

Title: Re: PCWwiki

Re Nevada Pascal.

I'm most definitely NOT a fan of Pascal, but this system seems to have a number of interesting features, not at all specific to Pascal, so I'll take a look.

I've found a set of 4 disks images to download, specifically for the 6128, but I'll extract all the files and see what's there, and get it running on my PCW.

While searching, I see there are some other 'Nevada' languages as well, Fortran, BASIC, Cobol, etc.   I don't know if they all have the same interesting extras?

Thanks for revealing this.

Update.  Files now transferred to PCW.   Actual compiler etc is first two disk images (CF2), second two are another manual (txt files) and some utility software.   The .PDF book though may be more useful.

In case anyone's interested, this Nevada package is actually v3.0 of JRT Pascal 3, and there's a bit of 'history' about this package.   It was getting some flak at the time (1983 ?) about the variances from Pascal 'proper' and also the package/marketing resulted in JRT going bust as they could not cope with demand based on the low price, also early versions had a LOT of bugs which hopefully were fixed by this version.   I hope!

Update 2:

This package is NOT a compiler.  Running the 'compiler' module creates an .INT (intermediate) file which may be comparable to the .REL file created by other compilers.  This module can then be 'run' using the EXEC4.COM, which provides an environment for the .INT module to operate it.   There is no free-standing .COM file created, unlike other 'proper' compilers.  There are benefits to this, the .INT file can access external modules (incl other .INT files, and .LIB files) while being 'executed', which might be helpful as opposed to needing to always include all the .LIB code into the .COM file.

Jevicac, I've scanned most of the "Echo du PCW" magazines that I had in my possession and they're now up at acpc.me (https://tinyurl.com/3pxtrwfy) and on my archive.org account.
A few issues are missing, but that's 32 more than before  :D . I think it could be nice to add them to PCWwiki (link or files directly).

Speaking of which, if someone have the missing numbers and could lend them to me or scan them to complete the series (300dpi png if possible) : Issues 17, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27,42  (and optionnally 28 and 29 as I had some missing pages)

A character set editor, nice!
Well, do the different PcW's have different character sets actually?

Is there a download somewhere?
Title: Re: PCWwiki
Post by: GeoffB17 on 21:50, 19 January 22
There are maybe 3 variants of Char sets for the PCWs.   The SuperType system came out long ago, and was a commercial system, this included for printing as well, and also did for Loco as well as CP/M.   There were some 'limitations' regarding Loco, so the prop spacing might go out a bit.   I used this a lifetime ago, and it worked fine.

Much more recently, there have been a couple of 'free' packages, incl various pre-made fonts.   One of them is on John Elliott's web site for download.   I've set my PCW up to use the Sans Serif font which I like a lot.   But these others are CP/M only.   The systems that use the same .EMS files will all work the same way, but the PcW (as opposed to PCW) will be different.

If need be, for CP/M, I'm sure you could pre-load the .EMS/EMT file with the revised font data.   Otherwise you can load the standard system file, then run a little util to replace the char data each time you start up.

I'm sure that at least one of these systems came with a char editor, but there were so many ready made there wasn't much point in messing with that.

If you want a lot of this handing on a plate, check: https://www.seasip.info/Unix/PSF/Amstrad/index.html (https://www.seasip.info/Unix/PSF/Amstrad/index.html)

My package (SETFONT) can also edit the screen character set for LocoScript 2.28+ (SCRCHAR.JOY) and write fonts into a LocoScript 1 .EMS file. It can't edit printer fonts though, which is what Supertype is for.
The PcW 9256 / 9512+ use the same screen fonts as the earlier PCWs. The PcW16 uses proportional fonts natively, and 8x16 / 8x20 bitmap fonts under CP/M.
I'll have to write up GENECAR for my page on PCW character redefinition when I can find the time.

Good evening, from PCWWiki we leave you with the graphic design program "The Desktop Publisher" from the English company DATABASE SOFTWARE. The entire program has been re-scanned in its solo version and pack version. They were formerly united but we have made each one independent. We have also added a new French version of The Desktop Publisher called "DTP-PAO". We hope you enjoy it and then the 3 new links.

Good afternoon, at the request of the colleagues of the French website "ACME", we have been asked to scan the French magazines that are missing to complete the collection. These are the L'echo du PCW. Said magazines were uploaded in their day 3 issues only due to lack of time. So when we restarted the scans, we took the opportunity to upload them to PCWWiki along with 11 3" discs ready for download that accompanied the magazine. There are 2 other discs, numbers 29 and 41, that give problems and we hope that they can be uploaded soon. Taking advantage of the comment to tell you that if anyone contains records from this collection and would like to collaborate to complete and preserve them, we would be very grateful and contact us The new issue of the magazine that has just been uploaded is the corresponding number 17 to March 1988. We continue with the scanning of number 19 which we will let you know when it is ready. Thank you all and we hope you enjoy it.

They are all on the ACME website. Soon we will upload numbers 28 and 29, which are incomplete on the French website ACME. We will try to finish scanning little by little the ones that are left and upload them to PCWWiki. We have only uploaded those that have been requested from ACME. To enjoy.

Fantastic !

We were only missing a few pages on number 28/29, that's great if you can complete them ! The page number missing are noted in the bookmarks - 32 to 35 for issue #28, and same for #29. I assume it's some kind of ordering form for old issues.

Save yourself some hard work if you're going to rescan the other issues, as they're already on ACME you can just get and put the pdfs from there on PCWWiki (They've been scanned in 300dpi png and clean, I guess the quality should be fine)

Many thanks for your help with completing the series ! :)

Good afternoon, after a long work and after consulting information about the Amstrad PCW games, we have decided to update the list of commercial games. The PCWWiki is already up to date and the games will be uploaded little by little since it involves a long work of scanning, retouching, etc. There are games created by current new users that will be published separately. At the same time, we ask that if you have any game that is not preserved or that is not on the list and that you can communicate it or send us the scans or dsk images of them, we would appreciate it. pcwwiki@gmail.com

You'll notice that some (or a lot) of the games have red links, but are marked as preserved. That's because we have them dumped, but still haven't got the time to scan the inlays, disks, manuals, etc, and create the wiki pages.

Regarding the note just above re WordStar, I do use WS from time to time on my PCW, mainly when I need to edit a large text file (say a disassembly file).   I still find this helpful, and this is also a little more practical with the uIDE system.

I use WS 3.3, this is installed with the PCW screen codes etc.  I don't normally bother to print anything.

I'd never used v 4.0, not sure if this has much that 3.3 does not (important, that is).

I've downloaded a copy of 4 - should have a look at it, and sort out the installation.

Here's the link to get it if you want to add it : https://acpc.me/ACME/AMSTRAD_PRO/AMSTRAD_PCW/LITTERATURE_LIVRES/[GER]GERMAN/JOYCE_mehr_als_ein_Textsystem(acme).pdf

Hello Kailokyra, thank you very much for the link. Actually, we don't have that book. Inform that all the books we have in various languages will be scanned again and uploaded to the web. We try to upload everything in higher quality, but the time is short and the material is quite a lot. Cheers

Hello. From PCWWiki we leave you with an extraordinary game for the Amstrad PCW's. This is "MINDFIGHTER" a graphic-conversational game from the British company Abstract Concepts, programmed by Fergus McNeill in 1988.

The game is based on life in Southampton after a nuclear holocaust. The player takes on the role of a young man who, if he manages to finish the game, becomes the savior of civilization as we know it. Anna Popkess's 150-page book is included. We hope you enjoy it.

Hi All

I am after a CPM.DSK image for a PCW8512 (Booting Disk)
I have one for the PCW8256
Is this the same one thats used for the PCW8512 ?

My PCW8512 has :- A: 40 Track Single sided B: 80 Track Double sided

Is there link that I can use to get the CPM.dsk

Thanks

Title: Re: PCWwiki
Post by: GeoffB17 on 14:22, 18 September 22
Hello,

Under normal circumstances, the boot disk for an 8512 would be identical to that for a 8256.  It's the drive that's being used for booting that's important, and both will be using a SS 40 track format.  If you've got an 8512 set up differently, and you've solved the problems that this will cause, then things might be different - for example the normal boot disk has a boot sector and the code in this will assume a SS 40t disk.

Of course, if you're using an 8512 you might have different things on your boot disk relating to reading/loading files from B: as opposed to A:, but this will be happening AFTER the system has finished loading.  If someone has added things to the boot disk, then such a disk will have problems if it's used on an 8256 as it will be looking for B:, but the system will have loaded OK.

You're asking about a .DSK image - is there a Gotek involved in this, as this can change things somewhat?

Geoff

I've got the game transferred to my PCW (d/l the .DSK, put the .DSK into Joyce, extract the .COM, transfer that via old PC to a CP/M disk and use that on the PCW), and yes, it seems to work.

But, hmm - I understand the reason for using the strange font for the on-screen text, but I'm struggling to read it.  I guess I'll get used to it in a while.

Even so, THANKS for your efforts.

I'm going off-topic here, but it surprises me how often I see that font in use when someone wants to employ a suitably "sci-fi" typeface. It's based on a typeface called Stop (http://www.identifont.com/show?374), and it was designed by Aldo Novarese in 1971.

Durell Software used it in their own logo and several of their titles as well.

Staying off-topic... I remember that font associated with one of the early PCW DTP packages - I guessed Stop Press, and indeed you can see it in PCWwiki's material (screenshot (https://www.habisoft.com/pcwwiki/lib/exe/detail.php?id=en%3Aaplicaciones%3Astop_press_or&media=aplicaciones:capturas:stop_press_screenshot07.png), manual page (https://www.habisoft.com/pcwwiki/lib/exe/detail.php?id=en%3Aaplicaciones%3Astop_press_or&media=aplicaciones:escaneos:stop_press_manual_082.jpg)).

John,

Not sure what you're referring to here?

Checking on the web, it seems that the original 'Quill' was NOT for CP/M, but this was later replaced by 'PAWS' also from GilSoft (Professional Adventure Writer) with numerous (?) additions over the original Quill.  This is also CP/M

In some ways, Quill = PAWS, I think the PAWS system still uses the Quill motife?

Some years ago, I downloaded various bits re PAWS, which I find I still have on a HD.   Two disk images for the system for PCW, PDF files for the main manual, and intro docs, etc.   Don't think I ever got around to doing anything with it?

The Very Big Cave Adventure was originally written using the Quill.

The PCW disc contains three files: RUN.COM (containing the string "Adventure Interpreter Version 1.2 by Graeme Yeandle") and two .QDB files containing the two parts of the game. My guess is that .QDB stands for Quill Database. I suppose it's possible that the game was converted to the PAW, but when I took a quick squiz at CAVE1.QDB all the words in the vocabulary tables seemed to be 4 letters long (Quill has a maximum of 4 letters; PAW allows 5).

It was one of the Spanish companies dedicated exclusively to games for PCW's. The game is called "Cubik Road" very similar to the popular Cue-Brick and contains digitized images of monuments in Spain, it does not stand out for its graphic quality but it does improve them in previous creations, including the menu is very similar to that of Head over Heels and contains sound, which is very strange in games for this machine. I have now written up my investigations of the .QDB format and the result can be found on my UnQuill page (http://www.seasip.info/Unix/UnQuill/) along with a tool to list the contents of .QDB files. This means that in future, it would be theoretically possible to write a utility to convert Quilled games from other platforms to .QDB for the PCW.

I've been doing a bit more work on this:

I've also updated my notes on the .QDB format to fix a couple of places where I got things wrong.

This should make it reasonably straightforward to convert Quilled games from the Spectrum, CPC or C64 to CP/M Quill. Maybe to CP/M PAW too.

Quote from: jevicac on 12:37, 16 November 23Hello everyone. From PCWWiki to inform you that thanks to HabiSoft a new game has just been published. This is a conversion from Spectrum to PCW. We hope you enjoy it. ...And very soon another game for Christmas. ATTENTION

This is great! I have a (possibly stupid) question - how do people convert games from the CPC and Spectrum to the PCW? Can the Z80 code be re-used even though the graphics mode is different?

Good morning, from the PCWWiki and as a gift from kings, you can now download a new game for Amstrad PCW, called "Nonamed". It has the marker adapted to be viewed with dithers / 4-color mode, and AY music in the menu. Let's enjoy it.

Good evening, our friend Kachorro, after surprising us with the game "Coliseum" for Amstrad PCW, now surprises us again with another new game and it will not be the last. This time with a game "Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior" for Amstrad PCW ported from the Spectrum version. According to him, the game contains the following features:

-ZX Spectrum buzzer music
-DK'Sound music by Amstrad CPC
-DK'Tronics joystick support
-And Maria Whittaker on the loading screen

Let's enjoy it. Available soon for download.

I find the PCW machine fascinating. One of the most underrated retro computers.

And this is why I wonder... Is there any exclusive game for the system?

If the answer is "no" (as I suspect), would it be possible to create (if such developer(s) exist) a brand new game specifically for the PCW that somehow uses the extra features (2x RAM Vs. the CPC, and... maybe there are some more?) so that it can't be ported (easily)?

I agree! It was sold about 2,5 times as many as the CPC. But as it was mostly used as an office machine for writing texts there was no nostalgic feelings because of games, own programs etc. what is the reason for "underrated".
I like the PCW because it is a pure Z80 machine just with a lot of RAM and a simple monochrome but high reolution bitmap screen. The design of the screen memory was a crazy compromise between having fast text output (without a textmode!) and still having the ability to display bitmaps graphic (but usually slower).

The CPC can have even more Ram. And the CPC can have even a higher resolution compared to the PCW :D by programming the CRTC in the required way. So for me there is no reason why there could be something which is only possible on the PCW, but not on the CPC.

Indeed Locoscript was using the PCWs rollerram in a great way for fast textoutput and scrolling, but that won't stop you to do similiar stuff on the CPC, maybe with some little restrictions, but it won't be a No-Go on the CPC.

I tried to download the 8000 Plus magazines from the "Magazine" section of PCWiki, but the page doesn't exist yet: https://www.habisoft.com/pcwwiki/doku.php?id=en:revistas

I will download them from this topic then.

BTW, I checked #1 and I loved it for several reasons:
- Last page as a cool ad of Tomahawk, the only PCW game I saw and played in person as a kid while my dad was visiting the PCW's owner, his friend.
- Several game reviews, including Microsoft Flight Simulator and a cricket game!
- Some cool offers of Infocom text adventures with nice, color pictures of the game covers.
- Jon Ritman's Batman being heavily promoted and described as a masterpiece because you can't explore a "vast set of rooms".
- Some interesting "funny" drawings in the middle of some boring technical notes that look like readers letters or readers trying to sell things, but are just technical curiosities.

All in all, a great magazine, cool design and interesting content.

Thanks,

I loved the Infocom advert on the back cover. I hadn't seen that one before. I have a few of the 'Softsel' Infocom games for the Amstrad PCW & CPC machines.
