Good evening, from PCWWiki we leave you with good news, the acquisition of two new games preserved for the PCW's. It's about the Annals of Rome and the other The Fourth Protocol."

jevicac

And another preserved marvel. It is about another game in this case, conversational "The Very Big Cave Adventure" from the CRL company.

robcfg

I'm completely shocked about the number of titles published for the PCW  :o

Great work, my friend!

Good morning from PCWWiki we leave you with a conversational adventure "The Very Big Cave Adventure" from the English company CRL Group. We hope you enjoy it.

Fascinating. I wasn't previously aware of a Quill version for CP/M.

GeoffB17

John,

Not sure what you're referring to here?

Checking on the web, it seems that the original 'Quill' was NOT for CP/M, but this was later replaced by 'PAWS' also from GilSoft (Professional Adventure Writer) with numerous (?) additions over the original Quill.  This is also CP/M

In some ways, Quill = PAWS, I think the PAWS system still uses the Quill motife?

Some years ago, I downloaded various bits re PAWS, which I find I still have on a HD.   Two disk images for the system for PCW, PDF files for the main manual, and intro docs, etc.   Don't think I ever got around to doing anything with it?

The Very Big Cave Adventure was originally written using the Quill.

The PCW disc contains three files: RUN.COM (containing the string "Adventure Interpreter Version 1.2 by Graeme Yeandle") and two .QDB files containing the two parts of the game. My guess is that .QDB stands for Quill Database. I suppose it's possible that the game was converted to the PAW, but when I took a quick squiz at CAVE1.QDB all the words in the vocabulary tables seemed to be 4 letters long (Quill has a maximum of 4 letters; PAW allows 5).

Good afternoon, today we bring you with another preservation for the Amstrad PCW in this case from the only Spanish magazine dedicated to PCW's, PCW Magazine. The publication of this second issue was unknown. We are pioneers in this publication. Enjoy.

Good morning, from PCWWiki we want to inform you of another authentic conversational game that we have preserved. In this case, it is "Kingdom of Hamil" from the English company TOPOLOGIKA. This conversational adventure is about a baby kidnapped by unscrupulous characters. Once he escapes, he returns to Hamil to claim his Kingdom and it will not be easy for him due to the harsh tests he has to face. It is a game that has been recognized as difficult to finish. Hopefully you like it.

PCWWiki ...Surprise, surprise, a new preserved game from the Spanish company OMK. It is about "Cubik Road". We will continue to report

jevicac

Good morning, today PCWWiki makes a new preservation dream come true with this simple but entertaining arcade game from the Spanish company OMK (OMiKron). It was one of the Spanish companies dedicated exclusively to games for PCW's. The game is called "Cubik Road" very similar to the popular Cue-Brick and contains digitized images of monuments in Spain, it does not stand out for its graphic quality but it does improve them in previous creations, including the menu is very similar to that of Head over Heels and contains sound, which is very strange in games for this machine. We hope you enjoy it.

Quote from: JohnElliott on 22:24, 29 June 23The Very Big Cave Adventure was originally written using the Quill.

I suppose it's possible that the game was converted to the PAW, but when I took a quick squiz at CAVE1.QDB all the words in the vocabulary tables seemed to be 4 letters long (Quill has a maximum of 4 letters; PAW allows 5).
I have now written up my investigations of the .QDB format and the result can be found on my UnQuill page along with a tool to list the contents of .QDB files. This means that in future, it would be theoretically possible to write a utility to convert Quilled games from other platforms to .QDB for the PCW.

JohnElliott

I've been doing a bit more work on this:

  •     I've created tools (qdb2txt / txt2qdb) to convert QDB files to/from a text format (which I've called .QSE) which is based on the source format used by CP/M PAW.
  •     qdblist, qdb2txt and txt2qdb are now included in the UnQuill distribution.
  •     UnQuill 0.15.0 can now output in .QSE format.

I've also updated my notes on the .QDB format to fix a couple of places where I got things wrong.

This should make it reasonably straightforward to convert Quilled games from the Spectrum, CPC or C64 to CP/M Quill. Maybe to CP/M PAW too.

This is great! I have a (possibly stupid) question - how do people convert games from the CPC and Spectrum to the PCW? Can the Z80 code be re-used even though the graphics mode is different?

jevicac

Good night. You already have your Christmas gift. A new game for Amstrad PCW's. Let's enjoy it.
