8-Bit Beat 'em up/Fighter Dev Comp 2020

Bitmap Soft is a brand new entity created to help and produce home brew video game titles across vintage home computers like the Commodore 64, Zx Spectrum, Amstrad home computers and many more. So to attempt to kick off with something we have been wishing to do for a very long time now and like many people out there love scrolling fighting games or 1-on-1 fighting titles, So we teamed up with the awesome Puddle Soft to bring hopefully this great competition to all the incredible and talented home-brew game developers to take on this mighty challenge to further their presence of their coding, graphical and musical skills to the fore front in creating amazing games for vintage machines.

The Amstrad Logo at the bottom... guess a Commodore game will win anyway.  ::)

The CPC and Spectrum definitely do better scrolling beat em ups, though the C64 probably has the edge when it comes to 1 vs 1.

Please, someone call the Batman Group, so the Amstrad can win the competition  ;)

Making a game is hard, and that genre is quite specific (and hard on a 8-bit system).

Personally I can't even think of submitting anything to a competition that specific.

Although looking at the rules, I guess someone could make a game for a less known 8-bit system (or at least that the organizers didn't even bother to include the logo), and win the best game for that system (because there's only one).

Anyway, good luck to anyone making a game for the compo. It is a pass from me :)

Best thing... could be.... make a game, polish it. Then test it and make it perfect - now sit down and wait until the NEXT competition takes place.  ;D 8)

Sounds like they're looking for some beat-em up games to sell.

The prize is up to 3 copies of your own game??? A bit baffling... it's so much work to make a game, an effective $20-$60 prize isn't likely to convince anyone who wouldn't do it anyway.

That's exactly what they are looking for based on what I  read in the comments.  They say you will get a percentage of the profit from the sales.  So you do all the hard works and they then sell your game and most likely take the majority of any profit they can make from your hard work, that is what I read from this.

When they say "3 copies" - what if your game was on a 3 inch disk (hard to come by?) or a GX4000 cartridge or a C64 cartridge? Would they be willing to source and supply that? Would you be able to choose if you wanted a jewel case cassette version?

I don't like to shill my own stuff, but I have a competition on my ASM forum too!

https://www.chibiakumas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=282

You just have to show off you work and talk about it a bit, it doesn't have to be finished, you don't have to give it away - and you could win an arcade machine toy ($40)

Two people will be picked at random who showed work - one gets the better toy ($40) the other gets a small cheaper one ($15)

Just saying!

Indeed, unless someone is already developing such a title it'll be hard to enter. And the prizes, of course, offer no incentive at all unfortunately.

Absolutely. But knowing the amount of time I sink on each game, this is something you're going to do for love anyway :)

There are lots of game jams; some better, some worse organised: https://itch.io/jams

Totally agree, that's why instead of going for cheap prizes they should've gone in another direction, perhaps. Especially the "3 copies max" is really cheap stuff...
