Title: #CPCRetroDev 2018 - Amstrad CPC Game Creation Contest new for 2018!

QuoteThis year so far has been very good for the Amstrad CPC, as we've seen a number of games that have been released such as Galactic Tomb, Pink Pills, Robbie Strikes Back, The Dawn of Kernel and even the incredible dungeon crawler 'The Shadows Of Sergoth'. But the Amstrad is about to get another boost in the homebrew department, as this week the #CPCRetroDev 2018 - Amstrad CPC Game Creation Contest has been announced

Exciting to see that it is announced  :)  but I haven't worked what I want to do yet, but 31st October is ages away right?

I have a question about the gesture in the rules though.
It mentions a gesture to Chicago's 30 in the form of a sprite but do we have to take a sprite exactly as is from the game or can we just draw an equivalent using whatever palette or perspective we like. Effectively this would be a sprite that is inspired by the game but not directly copied.

I am not also sure, but i suppose that it does not needed to be an exact copy- that is not the meaning of the competition.
I also have a question regarding <opera prima> award: it is mentioned that it refers to new groups, can i suppose that new individuals are also included?

That sounds like it was quite intense.
While I didn't have a game crashing bug I certainly kept adding core features or fixing potentially game breaking bugs.
My original plan was to make no changes after midnight came and went as I kept working until 4am.
By the way WinCPCtelera remains indispensable for my process. (I probably have some more bugs/unexpected behaviour to report but I'll do that when I'm less exhausted from the project)

In the end we should aim to do our best and enjoy the game creation process while learning more that we can apply to the next time.

As i have seen untl now, most games of this year competition reach very high quality standards! Many of them, if released 25 years ago, could have a very good commercial success and high publicity!

I know what you mean, I'm pretty sure I have game breaking bugs but I didn't have enough time for testing to actually find them.
Previously once I've submitted a game I haven't touched the codebase again.
However as I've not really gone looking for feedback (which is probably a mistake) there hasn't been any way to receive bug reports.

Not real suspense (maybe for the order), and the question is what game will be at the 5th place.

It is mostly a CPCTelera contest ( C + asm )

Some people are doing (i guess) 100% asm like CNG production which is way beyond the other productions (in MY opinion)

Next year, why don't you submit a game with "acceptable scrolling", as you put it!
Otherwise, like the rest of us, why don't you enjoy the hard work people have put into the games and have fun? No?

Yes, some people are doing ASM, concretely almost everybody like last year. I think there is 1 BASIC prod and 3-4 C prods this year. The rest are all ASM productions.

Games are not much better because they are done in ASM. In fact, best #CPCRetroDev games usually include C productions even being such a few compared to total productions. Baba's Palace was made in C, so was Cris: Odd Prelude and Outlaws, and so is Jarlac, which is being projected as winner by many people this year.

Please, stop saying that CPCtelera is C + asm. CPCtelera is a framework and programmers may use it for programming in C, asm and Machine Code if they like to.

Sadly there is few with acceptable scrolling.

I wouldn't say sadly. The number of games including scroll has been steadily increasing, and also has the quality of scrolls over time. That's definitely not sad news.

Moreover, I would be probably more conservative to evaluate some scrolling as "acceptable". For me, most scrollings this year are better than acceptable. A different thing would be if we speak of "top-tech" scrolling. But I would never expect most games to include "top-tech" anything. "top-tech" features are considered top because not many people implement them.

Not sure about the order, but those are very good candidates. There is also gameplay, of course, and we don't know that just by looking at the video.

In any case, looking forward to play the games!

Well, V-Scrolling can easily done with one or two scan lines very smooth and it doesn't take cpu time.
For H-Scrolling you still can go byte-wise (using CRTC R3) and that's also very smooth.

As shown with before (Mode 1 and Mode 0) a pixel-wise, smooth scrolling can be done very easy. And it takes nearly no cpu time. While the usual Mode-1 character soft scroll eats up resources a lot.  :)

The results are in! (see attachment)

Congratulations to Operation Alexandra and everyone who took part.

To celebrate I will be live streaming all 41 games this evening at 9PM GMT (or 10PM CET for anyone in France/Spain) on the AMSTREAM on my YouTube channel - https://gaming.youtube.com/c/Xyphoe/live (https://gaming.youtube.com/c/Xyphoe/live?fbclid=IwAR3UF_LgUFcV8OW2S88yu4Mxp47WDMtv43GaSe-1uOi_nXV3zz0_JaYLt3Y)

I was very honoured to be asked to be a judge again this year, and it was extremely tough choosing my top 4 especially - I did a special scoring system for myself and there was literally 1 point in between each game I chose for that top 4. The standard this year has been amazing again!

This year's CPCRetroDev 2018 has been mouth watering for the Amstrad CPC as throughout the competition we have seen many fantastic entries announced such as Jarlac, Legend of Steel, Operation Alexandra, The Adventure of Timothy Gunn, OPQA vs QAOP, Crimson Knight Adventures and many many more making a grand total of 41 enteries.

What emulator are you using ? I've tried with winape and CPCE95.

The size of the dsk downloaded is smaller (51Kb) than the "classic" dsk (~200Kb)

Sooo... I have played ALL the games, on a REAL CPC6128. Here is my review for each of them. Please remember that this is my opinion and you might find it quite controversial, especially when you compare my results with the ones made by the jury. More on this at the bottom...

So, here are the review, from BEST to WORST!

Deeper Warrens
This is a great game and easily the best game of this RetroDev! The graphics are good (the intro is very beautiful), varied, the gameplay very well balanced. I loved the secret passages and the shop to buy new gear! And little details (slowing down of the hero when crossing rivers or pikes, the animation when going down a ladder...) gives the game a superior quality. Every level is different. The short music, without being fantastic, is nice and doesn't get on your nerves. Congrats Arnaud! 8th??? This is a joke...

Legend of Steel
Pretty good! Great graphics, nice music (too bad there isn't an ingame music). I didn't like the respawning of monsters, and I couldn't get rid of slimes when they are stuck to you, but rather enjoyed the game.

Taulellets
At last, an original game!! Simple but effective gameplay, well executed. Some fresh air!

OPQA vs QAOP: the final battle
Not original, but the gameplay is good and the IA can be challenging. The music is OK and the various modes make the game quite interesting.

Crimson Knight Adventures
Could have been a good game, but the gameplay is a bit limited, making it only a "nice little game". Finished it in a row. The music is strange but keeps the tension. I liked the graphics.

Operation Alexandra
Great graphics, nice music, good animation. I can't deny the game is really well polished, with a cool introduction and ingame dialogs. Sadly, the rest is only the same platformer we have every year. Killing slimes and frogs is not much fun. The robots later aren't much funnier later. I also hate leaving a room, come back and see the monsters back again. When is kind of game going to evolve? (Note: the game crashed (CPC 6128, no extension) after the introduction, I had to reload and skip it).

Harvest Day
Some kind of Fruity Frank on LSD. Very easy at the beginning, it becomes surprisingly tricky after a few levels. Rather raw graphics and music, but I found it quite refreshing.

Foosball F3
Really cool! This is really well done. Great music! I'm not sure about the gameplay though, I couldn't score once, the motions of the players are too slow, the goal doesn't move fast enough... Or maybe it is only me?

Jarlac
Strangely enough, I didn't quite like this one. The graphics are pretty good (though a bit messy), so is the music. But not much fun: I hated the fact that ennemies were respawning instantly when you come back to a room. You also can not kill an enemy when it is "over" you, you have to move (if you can!), go back and kill it. All this plus the classic "I fall from a trap when appearing in a room" or "I jump to the room above, fall back to the room where I was, landing on a monster I just killed (and which I can't kill because I'm over it!!)", and you've a game to is only half-baked, in my opinion. Not much fun.

The adventures of Timothy Gunn
Damnit, I'm really disappointed about this one. The code is great, the graphics are great, the music is OK (I would have preferred a Prohibition-like song instead of a Jean-Michel Jarre ripoff, though). But the game is incredibly badly balanced and uninteresting. On my first attempt, dozen of ennemies jumped on me, I died in a few seconds. Second try, I simply run to the right, always shooting, and after a while, there are no ennemies anymore. So I run left, still shooting, and here they are! So that's all you have to do to win. Run in a direction, shoot like crazy, and after 30 seconds, run in the opposite direction. Just like Basket Case from the same author last year, CNG Soft doesn't seem to have played his own game to see if there are fun.

The Crypt
A gauntlet-like but not very fun. Too bad the graphics aren't better and the gameplay more varied, because the scrolling is surprisingly fast.

Red Sea
I liked the music and the theme! But it is an "outlaw" with an even lighter gameplay. Funny for a few minutes, though.

The Rookie Thief
I like the concept, but the game missed its mark. By jumping and getting all the objects, the guards will not matter anymore...

Snake Bubble
A kinda cool Puzzle Bubble clone, actually. Too bad the inertia/gravity of the characters is so simple, the motions are too slow and make the game rather dull.

Cannon Duels
Cool concept, but the IA is sadly too stupid to have some fun. Not bad music. Maybe funny with 2 players.

KimoHiyoko
I liked some ideas, such as the music that changes according to the room you're in, and interesting noise effects. The graphics are "ok" for this strange LSD-charged game. Too bad the scrolling is so slow...

Earth Defender
Interesting concept, but it is very hard to play efficiently because you only move in 2D whereas your opponents move in 3D... Making them very hard to kill.

The spirit of Halloween
Too bad the game gets repetitive very quickly, I liked the theme. The music seems nice, but it SHOULD have been played every frame!!

The last debt
Could have been interesting, but boring after a few minutes. With a real "jump" animation it would have been much better. The controls are bit awkward too.

Cat Pang
Pang clone, not very interesting because of the slowness of our shot, and the inertia of the balls that does not change once shot. I managed to finish it on the first time though.

Elfo Saves Christmas
Not bad for a first try. But this Zelda like becomes repetitive very quickly...

Tank
Simple concept that could have been nice, but without a solid AI (or a 2-player game), it has no real interest...

18th century invaders
At least this one made me smile :). No possibility to retry when you are dead???

Lunatic
Ultra simple platformer... But kinda playable.

Killing Machine
Very simple, but not very fun game. Just go to the bottom of the screen, shoot upwards and nothing can prevent you from winning.

Indigo
Sadly, a terribly repetitive game. The graphics weren't so bad.

Fitzroy and the infestation
Too simple gameplay for my tastes, ugly graphics and no sound.

Over Heap
I liked the "castle" ambiance, and even the scrolling is not too bad. But there is no gameplay, and once the top is reached... What else to do?

BringRG Back
The scrolling with sprites is not a bad idea. But there monsters are impossible to lose...

HackTank
It could have been a nice game, but without any barricades or stuff like that to improve the gameplay, there is not much to do. Your shot range is higher than your opponents so it's easy to kill everyone once you discover that trick. Only a few levels...

Cuchara Voladora
I didn't understand a lot of what happened, I shot strange monsters from a LSD trip and I guess the game was won. Not great.

ACReturns
The gameplay is OK, too bad the graphics are ugly, and there is no animation.

2 finger death now
The idea was nice, and I kinda like the graphics (the city in the background) but the gameplay is really not good, and there is no animation.

Penalty Kicks
Could have been a nice typeins in some magazine...

Invade Space
This one is, sadly, incredible bad. I can't believe this music I'm hearing.

Crocker
Wow, an unfinished game without collision test :).

Space Cowboy
This crashes at random moment on my CPC6128 with no extension. Did someone tested this on the real harware??

------------------------------------------------

To sum up, and in my opinion, I think the quality of the games of this year has decreased. Only a few games are really funny to play. I have nothing about platformers, but please stop rehashing the same plate with new graphics...
I'm also really surprised, once again, about how the jury gaves its points. It really seems they didn't "play" the game, but only judged its graphics and "wow" effect. A game like Deeper Warrens should NEVER have been 8th. Crimson Knight Adventures and Tautellets can NOT be beaten by The Rookie Thief and 77 Attempts, student game or not.

One pervert effect of such judgment is that talented developers will not take part of this contest anymore because the quality of their production will not be judged as it should: they won't enter the contest anymore (and I know a few people who didn't enter the contest for this very reason).

Anyway, this is just my opinion, I don't want to start a war, since I expected so much for these games, like every year. I'm just a bit disappointed by how it turned out, I guess. Next year will be better :).

Very very thanks to your review, that's what every homebrew developer would like to read about its works  :D
It' nice you noticed the little details and the variety of levels, i give a lot of importance to these points.

I haven't played all the games, so I don't know if I can agree, but thanks for this. I think this feedback is gold, even if these aren't my games, I'm taking notes!

This is the best a game developer can have: someone that plays the game and provides honest feedback (even if a bit blunt at a times, I guess there's a bit of English being your 2nd language).

I've read other posts (including in amstrad.es) where people mention other games than the winners and I think that's very healthy. I love that the community doesn't have a flat uniform taste, specially when a competition like this one is perfect for experiments.

How do you walk at a normal speed in Deeper Warrens?  Everytime I've tried the game the player character moves so slowly and then sometimes speeds up a bit and then slows down again. Also how do you attack the enemies?  Fire does seemingly nothing.  Even when breaking the walls (which does work) there's no visual feedback of an attack other than the wall block breaking.

If you walk slowly it's because you don't have enough food.
To attack it's like Gauntlet you walk into the monster, when you hit you'll see blood effect. The fire button is used to launch Dagger and to use potions (selected via second button or directly with keys 1 to 4)
Wall, crates and skeletons contains items (food, gold, daggers) and can be destroyed by walking into.

Ah ok i thought it might be. It just doesn't feel like I'm really doing anything then.  Was never a big fan of Gauntlet though but  this a good game.

I've played them all and I think my fave is Legend of Steel, with Operation Alexandra, Jarlac and Timmy Gun being somewhere just behind in some kind of order.   Foosball is pretty interesting and has a lot of options.  OPQA vs QAOP (i dunno what that's about, never could stand using those keys to play games... joystick all the way for me) is a nice CPC clone of Puyo Puyo which I used to play on SNES emulators a lot.

Really cool! This is really well done. Great music! I'm not sure about the gameplay though, I couldn't score once, the motions of the players are too slow, the goal doesn't move fast enough... Or maybe it is only me?

I'm glad you like it.

The figures should not go slower than the ball, if so, then the 6128 is not very happy with the game.
Foosball was only tested on the CPC 464 (as required by the bases).

Maybe the gameplay is not very good at the beginning and the controls are difficult.
I still have to improve in this aspect in the future.

And I subscribe, Deeper warrens is a great game, much better than mine.
In my opinion I think that the technical and artificial intelligence aspects should score separately.

My congratulations to Arnaud.

It's hard to compare a Gauntlet like and a foosball game.
Your game is more original than mine (only one foosball game in all 8 bit era), and you were able to make a CPC playing Foosball, that great !

Deeper Warrens should have placed much, much higher.
Definitely top 3.
Arnaud - please don't let the 8th position discourage you.
You did a *fantastic* job, and the community here recognises that.

I am surprised by how disappointing Jarlac is! It's a real pity as I've been looking forward to it.
The messy graphics aren't a big deal, but some gameplay design choices ruin the game for me.
Not being able to swing your sword while jumping feels *wrong*, and not being able to attack an enemy that is sitting *on* you (sucking away your energy) really hurts playability.

I have played most of the games today!
I believe that we must not forget that this contest is mainly a students contest, and this makes the goal of the competition different than any other competition. The goal of a student is to make a game, and acquire experience that will use in his future. Their basic  purpose is not mainly quality or graphics, the first goal is submitting a game.
In this context, any feedback is very helpful, strict or not, as it has to be taken into consideration by the developers.
And also, in this context, and generally speaking, my opinion is that maybe it could be better if more attention is given to new game ideas and playability/enjoyment! (instead eg of graphics or an intro loading screen).
At any case, i believe that all made their best for making their game and that the quality was very good! They all need our congratulations and feedback as a reward for their effort!

I'll admit those are flaws with Jarlac but I still find it more fun than Deeper Warrens.  The lack of any actual attack sprite and having to 'push' into the enemy in the latter really kills the fun of combat for me.  I just feel no sense of actual contact with the enemy at all.   And while the slower speed on low food may make some sort of real world sense i guess, the speed changes just make the game seem quite frustrating to me.  I say it's a good game but certainly not one of my faves in the contest. For little sprites attacking stuffs, Legend of Steel gets the feel of combat a lot better for me and well animated sprites for the size of them helps that for me a lot.

I don't know if this is what @Targhan (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=110) meant, but in my opinion it's not a problem of genre but the way we approach it as designers. At this point is quite hard to not make another game that feels generic and "more of the same".

I think Operation Alexandra made a good effort to be different, but I also felt that the initial enemies where a bit uninteresting perhaps.

I like the game though. To mention other games from the same group, it has that "classic" feel that Cuauhtémoc has, whilst "Adiós a la casta" is a bit "more of the same" feel @Targhan (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=110) referred to.

There are many ways to make platformers. The most famous one, Mario, has yet to be challenged by a CPC game! My only gripe is that most of the latest platformers on CPC relies on the same mechanisms and have all the same weakness (monster spawning, high level of difficulty, etc.).

Galactic Tomb was a bit different, for example, more hectic, which is what I liked it.

Operation Alexandra has a strong adventure component with some object based puzzles. Those initial enemies are misleading, if you keep playing I think you'll find the game is great.

I think all this discussion just reminds me how hard it is to make a video game that'll appeal to folk when everyone's got different tastes and ideas about game design and what makes a game enjoyable even in specific genres.  One feature that could be fun for a certain player may be tedious and frustrating for another.

Imo, Operation Alexandra is a fair winner from a general point of view. Obviously it's not the most original concept, and the feeling of what's fun is subjective, so many people will find other games from the contest more fun. Of course every opinion is respectable.

But I wouldn't go so lightly on other important aspects like the polish and final quality, the storyline, the atmosphere achieved, etc... I think Targhan knows a lot about this with his great work Orion Prime that we all value very well because reaching that level of quality requires many hours of dedication and effort, as well as being a manifestation of artistic and technical quality, also very important in a game imo and of course it's worth playing.

If I had to show the best CPC games to a friend of another platform like C64, I would show Orion Prime, and from the CPCRetroDev I would show Operation Alexandra before any other without hesitation if what I want is to make a good impression, not only of the game but the CPC too, and I think it's also pretty funny to play.

If we look at the evolution of the 4mhz games, we can see a clear progression in quality, both technically and artistically, and if they continue like this we don't know where their limits lie.
I hope I'm not misunderstood, I am not in favour of censoring opinions for hurting feelings and I think Targhan's sincerity is to be welcomed, but for me all the effort 4mhz is doing must be rewarded and another perverse effect (that maybe Targhan hadn't thought) of valuing games like Crimson Knight Adventures (e.g), made in 6 weeks by students, better than a 6 months work of 4mhz is that people who are growing in talent like 4mhz might lose interest in devoting so much time to a hobby whose main reward is the feedback from the scene, and I think it would be a shame to lose teams like 4mhz. On the other hand, I don't think the authors of Crimson Knight Adventures should feel bad about being ranked worse than Operation Alexandra.

For the students the important thing about the experience is learning. Most of their games look more like prototypes than finished games because they are engineers in training who in their professional life will delegate artistic tasks to others. And for this reason I believe that the contest does well in dividing the categories and granting special mentions and prizes, as well as separately valuing the gameplay.

In any case, from here my congratulations to all participants and my thanks for growing the CPC scene each year with more games.

Don't get me wrong people: I valued Operation Alexandra's quality, and I quote myself:
QuoteGreat graphics, nice music, good animation. I can't deny the game is really well polished, with a cool introduction and ingame dialogs
I'm just a bit disappointed that an experienced team like 4mhz doesn't spend more time on something a bit more adventurous than the average "shoot/move forward" type of game. But this game didn't "click" on me, that's all. No big deal really.

Orion Prime that requires 128k and comes on 4 floppy disks?  Whereas this contest was about games that can load off a cassette tape for the 464?  Also Orion Prime is one of those games I respect for the level of work and hours put into it but it's not a game I enjoy myself cos it's just not my kind of game.  It's all very much down to what entertains a particular player.   While it entertains many people I'm sure, it doesn't provide me with much fun being that I don't enjoy that kind of pointy clicky, lots of reading, adventure gameplay so I couldn't recommend it as 'best of CPC' being that I personally don't feel encouraged to often load it up and play it like I do with many other kinds of games.

Which is what I just stated about OP.  If you like graphic adventures it's likely you'll like Orion Prime.  If you like platform shooty things you'll likely like Operation Alexandra.   I'm very much the latter.
And it feels a bit silly to be disappointed that developers made a game they wanted to make.  It's up to them what they enjoy creating and playing as it's up to you as to what you enjoy too.

Well, that's reviewing a game, isn't it? There are things that you like, and things that you don't. Sometimes everything is great, sometimes is not. Is not like we're reviewing the game in a magazine in the 80s

And that's fine; is not like you're asking the developers to change the game!

I'm enjoying this thread. It is a good reflection on game design and, as I said, I'm taking notes.

EDIT: I get all sort of feedback from my games, and not all of it is positive. I disagree with some of those things, and on others, I agree (even if it is eventually). I think it helps me to make better games.

Things I'd change in the contest:
- I would ask the jury, at least those who evaluate aspects such as gameplay, technical quality or the global product, to test on real hardware to better evaluate aspects such as fps, response speed, etc...
- Since there is no risk of few entries, I would add a 128kb category. This I think would be good to enhance the creation of bigger and more complex games.

What a nice little discussion Targhan has fired!

I think I might have an opinion to share, but before I do, I'd need the help of technically minded people.

Are there games in CPCRetrodev 2018 that run at a constant 50 frames or 25 frames rate? Are there games where the movement (sprites and scrolling if have) is done in per pixel steps rather than byte steps or character steps?

It's interesting you are talking about these points because they have been a problem for me during the development.

Quote from: Carnivius on 08:05, 12 November 18The lack of any actual attack sprite and having to 'push' into the enemy in the latter really kills the fun of combat for me.  I just feel no sense of actual contact with the enemy at all.
I haven't added attack animation because i thought they weren't needed, why ? Because Gauntlet didn't have it :) But i must admit it's a lack, and i'll try to add them.
But before that, i have to found memory, for now it remains exactly 9bytes free, but @Targhan (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=110) promise me a gain of 500kb of memory with the new arkos2 player.  :D

I was using the push to fight because the fire button was already used for throw dagger and open inventory and Gauntlet works like that (but the fight is more based on missile weapon). I can try to see if the fight with fire button is more intesting.

Quote from: Carnivius on 08:05, 12 November 18And while the slower speed on low food may make some sort of real world sense i guess, the speed changes just make the game seem quite frustrating to me.
I'm agree it's too much annoying. Maybe i should replace the slow down effect with a fight malus and a more important lose of life.
To the people who played with DW, what do you think about that ?

Thanks for feedback @Carnivius (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=50)

Completing what Rhino said, I would also suggest introducing the Amstrad Plus/GX-4000 platforms in the contest. They are Amstrad machines after all, and with recent games released / C4CPC there is no reason anymore to not give some love to those platforms!

I never even knew that.   I have played Gauntlet a lot over the past few decades on various machines but always assumed the 'shooting' style attack was the main form of combat as it just never occured to me to be able to walk into an enemy without receiving damage.   Loading it up again now I can see the pushing sorta works but seems far too risky and then shooting axes is much safer and more fun.  If you're being true to Gauntlet then yes i guess your game makes sense. :P
Hope i wasn't too negative with things. I do like your game, I just found it quite frustrating and lacking a visual impact of actually hitting the enemy (the blood splat is fine but just seems to strange to me with no movement from the character, even one frame per direction)  but again like much here could just be down to personal tastes.

I personally think this is wise to keep to competition to 64kb. It's like in demo parties: there are categories for 1k, 4k, 16k, and "no limit"...

A game that exploits the full 128k memory will certainly have a better "wow" effect than a student game which, in retrospect, could have an awesome gameplay and should win the contest, as it is for me a "best game" contest.

Every single one who has submitted a game in this competition, has my gratitude for helping our beloved machine not to succumb into oblivion.

For me it's like early Xmas when the games are released and i have a chance to play them.

Thank you all.

Now.
FFS STOP USING WASD CONTROLS!

What is wrong with you?

This is CPC and and not an Intel or Amd machine.

Please, stick to QAOP keys, joystick or a redefine option.

I would like to add that, for me at least, it is difficult to use WASD to move and JIKL to shoot at the same time, it is more easier (and more classic) to shoot at the direction you are looking at

I remember being surprised when I played the 2014 entries that they adopted wasd which seemed so strange.
I think I put it down to them adopting what was familiar for modern games and not knowing what was typical for our machine.
However I would have thought they might have played a few classic games and figured it out by now that no other games use that control scheme.

I think 'funniest' is a mistranslation of the original Spanish, which is 'más divertido'. According to the Spanish dictionary that is currently on my desk, this phrase can also be translated to 'most enjoyable' or 'most entertaining', which sound like more appropriate terms to me.

Ah ok, just looking at 2017 rules again it has the same thing for the english rules.
That said if it were an actual category that encouraged people to add humour that could be interesting although it may not translate internationally.

That's actually a good question. When I wrote "Timothy Gunn" (I released a big update yesterday night, btw; code and data needed serious cleanup, the AI of both old and new enemies needed a full rewrite) I wanted to keep a consistent framerate (in this case 12.5 fps) at any price; hence some design choices such as forcing a C64-like sprite size (24x21) to ensure that sprite render code could be unrolled. And so, sprites can be flipped horizontally and vertically, as well as drawn in full colour or masked into a single ink (the "flash" effect). But the unrolled code carries a heavier footprint, so pixel-aligned sprites became out of question.
During the brainstorm before the making of the game I pondered writing a much simpler one that would however allow higher framerate. For example a clone of "Mad Planets" (for our C64 friends, "Crazy Comets" and "Mega Apocalypse") could easily run at 25 fps on the CPC, and even at full 50 fps after severely restricting the amount of sprites.
(http://cngsoft.no-ip.org/MPLA0022.PNG) (http://cngsoft.no-ip.org/MPLA0024.PNG) (http://cngsoft.no-ip.org/MPLA0028.PNG)
All these possibilities jumped off the window when I realised that all the tile and sprite code I had written ate too much memory and also had consumed my time: I ultimately had to make the actual game in just four weeks. I imagine that others had to take similar choices as well.

Ah cool!  I've played each update. :)  It's one of my fave games from the contest and great for quick frantic blasts to see how far I can get. :)

@cngsoft (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=191) I have played the latest version of TmmyGun. Congrats for your effort! It is much better I guess. The pace is less hectic. Yet, this time (you're going to think I hate you!!) there were not enough enemies (!!!), so not enough bonus, and the sniper kept on killing me, and there was nothing I could do about it as it is almost impossible to escape from it. So I admit I couldn't past beyond the first level, whereas I reached level 4 with the CPCRetroDev version!

On a side note, for some strange reason, the DSK could not be converted to HFE (HxCFloppyEmulator would crash when converting your DSK), so I had to play it on emulator, sorry.

Au contraire, you're the alpha tester I should have had during development :-) I'd like to keep the relatively slow pacing of the first levels so new players don't get too overwhelmed; I can instead make the sniper delay longer. How about twice as long in the first level? It would roughly fit the current enemy spawn rhythm, twice as slow in level 1 as in level 6.

Intriguing. I use the same tool to generate the DSK files as in the past, its only unusual feature is that it clips unused tracks off, but the header itself shows the right number of tracks (right now 6: the last used track is #5). Do other games of mine transfer properly? Did the previous versions of TimmyGun transfer?

Alright. Meanwhile I've posted a fifth version of TimmyGun with a slower sniper in the early stages, several small tweaks, and a bugfix: bullets shot above the top edge of the screen aren't ignored. Player and enemies can now kill each other while standing on the highest platforms.
P.S.: I just reuploaded it after noticing that a bit I had written while on the laptop (enemies that jump vertically also look at the player) wasn't on the desktop.
