We have also opened a Sponsors phase. If you wish to sponsor the contest, please contact us through our email: cpcretrodev.org@byterealms.com before 7th September, 2022.

Let's goooo!!!
Been looking forward to this.

awergh

Been watching to see when this would be announced.
Not that hasn't stopped me from starting my next game.  ;D

Not a lot of detail yet but that game looks a little harder to gesture as from the video it doesn't look like there are a lot of graphics to choose from.

Gryzor

If it is half as good as previous contests... it'll be bloody great. :)

I've watched the video of Larcena's Legacy over and over again, looking for something that can be used as a tribute.
Finally found something... hope it'll be enough of a connection!

Hi

Are there already bases for the contestants?
Dates?

awergh

My guess is that the submission date will be 1st November but they haven't announced it yet unfortunately.

awergh

The submission date and the awards have been announced  ;D however slightly confusing the two different sites have different submission dates.

It is either 2nd November
http://cpcretrodev.byterealms.com/cpcretrodev-2022-2/

Or 1st November
https://itch.io/jam/cpcretrodev2022

Obviously the more time the better but clarity would be good.

Gryzor

They corrected it, it's the 2nd!

awergh

I can see 2nd on both but they have different times (1000 UTC+10 vs 2359 UTC+1), usually the official site is the source of truth.

CPCRetroDev

Hello everybody,

We are happy to announce that this year's rules are now available on itch.io https://bit.ly/CPCRetroDev2022itchio as well as this year's dates, which you can also find on the official website of this edition https://bit.ly/CPCRetroDev2022.

Please note that this year there is a new rule for third party content whereby:
1) It is allowed to use it under express license (the license must be included in the submission), but most of the game must be own content.
2) Third-party content will not be taken into account in the jury's assessments.
3) The aforementioned also applies to reused own content that already existed before.

Please take these changes into account when developing your games.
We look forward to seeing what you have prepared for this new edition.

Kind regards.

What does that mean in practice?

I agree with gryzor, we need a bit more clarity on this.
In my case particularly part 3.

I don't have any third party content in the form of sound, music, graphics, levels but I do have some third party code for arkos tracker and a getkeys function that came from here. However I do have content that I have previously created that I have reused in the game (mostly in the form of functions and the general structure of the code).
It seems a bit unnecessary to rewrite code just to make it different when the existing code is something that I have written myself and does what I need it to already.

Although I might be misunderstanding and I should just be careful not to leave in too many placeholder graphics and sounds from last year.

ronaldo

Of course, new rules always are bound to require explanations  :). This rule in particular has been proposed by many people on past two years, in different forms. The motivation is simple:
  • Imagine 2 contestants that make two games
  • First one creates everything by its own. Music is okay but not great, graphics are nice but not spectacular.
  • Second one takes graphics and music already available, with creative commons licenses. Both graphics and music are from the best artists, and the result is outstanding.
  • Deserves the second developer to get points for music and graphics? Deserves more points than the first one?

During past two years, this debate has been intense, because there have been examples. Almost all jury members agree that developers have to be judged by their creations, not by the use of already existing content. Many of you have also expressed similar views. On the organization we have discussed it and we agree. Therefore, we have a new rule for this scenario.

In general, this does not apply to code. The rule is for content and for the resulting game. We all know that code reuse is not only logical, but a desired practice. So, the rule is about "content", not code. That is, Game Design, Graphics, Music, Stories and related stuff.

Now, I think that, to properly proceed with more doubts and considerations, first it would be advisable to carefully read the PDF with the official rules. Then, when you have a detailed idea on what the rules exactly say, we may proceed with more doubts, if you like :)

Hello

I am going to use sounds that already exist previously, and I have the author authorization by email.
How should I indicate that when I'll upload the game?

Thanks

Please, take into account that my explanations are only explanations. What counts is the rule. Therefore, that's why I am asking people to first carefully read the rules in the official PDF. I'm glad to try to explain any doubts that may arise, but I think this is dangerous if rules are not first read and interpreted. Rules say what you have to do when using third party content. Could you please read them and then ask me any doubts you have afterwards? :)

awergh

Thanks ronaldo that clears that up for me  ;D (I will try to keep identical graphics and sounds to a minimum though).
It does make a lot of sense as making your own original content should be encouraged even if graphics aren't what some of us are best at.

As you said code reuse is completely logical but I did wonder as I thought in an interview you did with Xyphoe you mentioned wanting to encourage students to build things from scratch rather than using what has been done before but maybe I misunderstood.

CPCRetroDev

Hello everyone,
For yet another year we are less than a month away from closing the #CPCRetroDev submissions and, as usual, we would like to announce the sponsors that make this possible year after year.

Let us start by one of last year's winners, Lambda Mikel, who won in the category of best Artificial Intelligence from the #CPCRetroDev2021 edition with the game "The Wrath of the MCPC" and donated his prize to this year's contestants.
Thanks to him, 100€ will be destined on his behalf to the winners of the PRO and UA categories of this 10th edition.

For the second year in a row Amstrad Sakis and Somos de Amstrad (SdA) come together to bring us the BASIC category.
As last year, their 100€ will be divided into 2 prizes of 60€ and 40€ that will be awarded to the two best games developed in BASIC without the use of external libraries.
We look forward to seeing which games you will submit using this exciting language.  :)
