I did a test now, and it actually doesn't work. The game freezes on the first screen!

Actually the game only works on dsk format, it's possible that in a few days we will try to make it work's on M4.

An amazing project. The level of technical and presentation polish is fantastic.

After playing and the game then trying to return to the main menu screen the game does sometime crash and reset my 6128 plus. I can recreate this consistently if I start the game and then press ESC to quit, press Y and then the computer will reset.

After a bit more experimentation it looks like the game doesn't like ParaDOS being in ROM7. Revert to AMSDOS where no ROM initialisation text is displayed and no crashes occur. I guess this also might be the cause of the M4 issues.

Sorry, is there some program or similar that allows us to copy a .dsk image from M4  to a 3" disk? Any guide?

There is but as far as I remember it's also included in this rom:

It works most of the times.

Not you. The ennemies waves will require a rework to make the game fun to play. :(
Title: Re: Red Sunset Launched
Post by: Gryzor on 08:03, 23 June 20
I think you have to absolutely learn the waves and anticipate them by placing your ship just right before they appear... Not sure what exactly the issue is - small hitboxes? slow fire? too many shots required?

But damn it's so pretty.
Title: Re: Red Sunset Launched
Post by: TotO on 08:12, 23 June 20
For me, the first problem looks that you can't destroy all the ennemies.

Because they moves with a high horizontal amplitude, it is really difficult to shoot them with a "char" precision.
Probably, the player fire had required to have a "half-char" accuraty or a wide and rapid fire to be able to balance that.
Title: Re: Red Sunset Launched
Post by: VincentGR on 08:30, 23 June 20
The main ship skips pixels a bit from left to right, this makes the aiming a bit hard sometimes.
No problem though, it is awesome.

Yes, the horizontal speed is high indeed, but that could be fixed with larger hit boxes perhaps. And yes, it's awesome anyhow.
Title: Re: Red Sunset Launched
Post by: Carnivius on 14:16, 23 June 20
Excellent gameDunno what you guys are on about.  I'm hitting most of the enemies and many whole waves.  Are you just holding fire or hitting fire repeatedly?  The latter works for me.

My only crit is that I have to Redefine to use the joystick everytime for gameplay even though the joystick already works for the menu.

Great graphics, music, smooth scrolling, large playfield.  High quality shoot 'em up for CPC.  :)
Title: Re: Red Sunset Launched
Post by: Gryzor on 14:38, 23 June 20
Ohhhh wait, hitting fire repeatedly made a big difference!!!

I spend just two words to say that the game is wonderful and soon I will prepare a special dedication to this game, complete with a review (unfortunately in Italian)!

I have an observation:

"One thing I didn't understand is the fact that I thought they were only three levels (as I saw initially from a longplay on the net). Yesterday I laboriously finished these three levels, but instead of showing the final sequence the game started again with a higher level of difficulty? Is this normal or did I miss something?" ::)

Good observation.
Probably you didn't complete the 3 levels in the same game so once you finished the third level you were invited to play it in hard mode from the begining.
Not bad for a free game for CPC I guess ;)

The coder doesn't own any M4 so he is accepting donations to adapt the game to this piece of hardware.

There have been some changes since then, I don't really know how M4 works. Probably somebody (not me) adapted or added some routines to the Demo code to run it on the M4.

You should understand how to do it step by step. I have a CPC 6128 and an M4 (not connected to the network). All games / programs load them internally to the SD through a frontend. The .CPR file is loaded into memory from there and is read from the card. Then I perform a soft reset so that the .CPR disk remains loaded in memory. But whether I run RUN "SUNSET or ùCTR the game doesn't work. :(

This is my procedure. How do you do it? ::)

I renew my congratulations for the hard work done around this game. The concentrated essence is not only that of having created a splendid game, but also that of having infused a lot of love towards this wonderful machine! :-*

I am truly grateful to you for these strong emotions!

Managed to play a little bit over the weekend, when family allowed; I'll be honest, there were times I was forgetting this was a CPC! Not necessarily because of the technical level, but because of the aesthetics and feeling of it.

Very good cos it stands out and feels unique on CPC even for a vertical shooter.  It's just so polished and has a distinct style that helps give it's own identity. :)

Hi
I just made a M4 version of Red Sunset. The save/load stats are working too.

As is bin-patched and there are little room (and time) for modification, the game works better without expansion roms.
I don't know why is that as Artaburu told me that the rom area is not used for program data on the game.
Anyway the game works like a charm (without roms) and almost like a charm with extra roms (sometimes it reset on getting back to the menu).

A standard edition can now be ordered from Bitmap Soft (https://www.bitmapsoft.co.uk/product/red-sunset/). It seems that the only differences are the lack of a 'limited edition' number on the box, and no cardboard insert to hold the disc and other items in place.
