Title: Revision 2018
Post by: Targhan on 01:03, 27 March 18
... So, do we try to reserve the same tables as last year? :)
Title: Re: Revision 2018
Post by: MacDeath on 20:28, 27 March 18
clever choice : well placed to see the screen, not too far from the pop corn stand and full of Amstradists... (oh wait...)

Won't attend thi year (see next time perhaps) but will watchthe lives streams Saturday night at Ast's place... (and whenever I can at home)
Please win some prizes and say hello to the camera. ;)

You Amstradists should check to be interviewed by the live streamers, provided you can talk in english and not in glitches.
After all there were quite a respectable number of prods and podiums in the past years, and it may be nice for once to have peoples knowing the machine to talk about it.

Have fun, come chat with us and take many photos and vids and make fun reports as usual !!!
Also post a curry wurst for me.

Does anyone know where to find the program ?

Hi Guys,

I will be there again before door opening (will already arrive at thursday this year).

@Targhan (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=110), will you be there on time again, too? Would be cool, then we can fight for about the same tables again like last year :)
Does anyone have an overview, who is coming this year from the Amstrad scene?

*UPDATED*

My current list is:
- Eliot
- Hicks
- Beb
- Krusty
- NoRecess
- Ced
- Overflow
- Longshot
- Toto
- Lone Ranger
- Targhan
- Toms
- Zik
- Offset
- Optimus
- Prodatron
- Cider (from the DOS age)
- Octoate
- BSC
- Kanga + Markus

*UPDATED*

Who else?
I will print reservation papers again, hope we are enough at 12:00 to be able to occupy an own "area" again :)
@MacDeath (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=221), too bad that you are not coming this year :( I will miss you

Looking forward so much to the Revision party and see you all again!!! :) :)

I wanna encourage everyone who participates to do a lot of video recording with their cellphones. Then have someone assemble all recordings into one big video - adding date and time in the lower right corner, and upload to YouTube as a "Revision Party Report 2018 from the Amstrad CPC table" for the rest of us to see.  :)

Don't hesitate to make personal greetings on camera.  ;)

I don't mind being the one assembling all the clips. Have done this many times at this point. Just make sure you send me the original unedited clips (to preserve META data that contains timestamps and such, needed to be able to put date and time in the corner).
Gimme some DropBox or Google Drive or FTP or HTTP or whatever links when ready.

The result can look somewhat like this:

@mr_lou (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=96) I personally prefer more enjoying the moment than recording video, but it's only my personal taste! The same in concerts: I still don't understand why people are recording the whole show instead of living it. Of well :). Photos are nice, though.

But that's exactly why it's great having 10 people each do a couple of 2-3 minute clips during the whole event. That way no one spends the whole time recording. but rather just maybe 5-10 minutes in total each. So everyone is still present in the moment - and now there's a rather nice video of the event too, lasting 20-40 minutes.

Modern cellphones makes it possible.

Since the whole Condense crew is going to be at Revision this year, I take it they are going to release their demo after all. Nice! Is anyone else planning a release? I expect Condense release to be heavy on the graphics side. So maybe it is going to be a good test to see if the graphics can push the CPC beyond pure code porn and win the oldschool compo this time!

These videos are only fun (to me) if everyone who was filmed has accepted being filmed. Obviously don't wanna bother anyone.

I won't be present myself, so I won't personally be filming anything. All I can offer is to assemble all clips from everyone.

Obviously Overdrive2 won the two Meteoriks where Amstraders "competed".

Despite the distance I can even hear Overflow's manly tears into my heart as he went out of the hall in search for a curry wurst and a margharita.
(ok perhaps not)

Still a moral victory as the host had to justify why Logon's Run didn't win.

Has anybody an idea where everyone is sitting. I see no blue screens when looking at the main hall camera footage. Usually the French cluster together and there's a lot of blue screens in one spot.
Kanga should easily be visible while Octoate has lost so much weight that even Paper Mario looks fat.

Also, what can we expect this year? NoRecess is said to come from Canada this year. Chances are that he has something to show off, right? And the others?

Ah, different camera, better view. I can just make out a few revealing blue screens on the right and left. It seems everybody sits at mostly the same places as every year.

- demo oldschool compo: we (Condense) are all set for the compo ! I'm currently uploading for Youtube (still private). Once the demo will get shown on screen, 1-2 hours later it will be available on Youtube & Pouet.
- intro oldschool compo: Vanity's prod also ready for the compo !
- graphics oldschool compo: Beb & Ced are releasing a bitmap. In the case of Ced, it will be a one-day work :P

The party is super fun and lots of incredible people are there ! Here attached a picture of the Amstrad place at Revision, sorry not all CPCs/people are visible (yet) but there are some :)

That's not true... ok... maybe... I am just doing to much sports nowadays I guess :D.

TBH: this years Revision is awesome and great fun again. Thanks to all the participants and sceners who are here. I am also happy very happy to be mentioned in the oldskool demo by Moods Plateau :D - one of the very, very, very few demos for the KC85.

Just saw the Oldskool graphix that I missed today.

Great "improvised on the spot" graph from CED.

Awesome Graph from BEB.

Many great comments in the live.

Still the 2 last "Amiga" graphs sure are nice, the one from MADE is a clear podium contender, the dragon may be also a serious contestant. Amiga sure has quite some advantages on the CPC but hey...

Can just hope for the Amstradists to complete all podiums they ran for.

So cool to meet you all again, plus the legends from the past like Longshot :) I wonder if it's already the largest cpc meeting now? The party itself was very very full this year. Hope the best for the cpc entries tomorrow! So sad that it's now nearly over again :(

This begs the question, is Longshot still what he is or can he be called Short-missfire these days..?
(yeah this joke is terrible and I should feel ashamed) :picard:

Can't wait for the reports and photos from you guys.

Found the pictures from Demozoo.
POUET don't do graphics, Demozoo do.

https://demozoo.org/graphics/185532/

https://demozoo.org/graphics/185534/

And they are gorgeous.

I listened to the Live stream hosts (Truck and consorts) and they talked about the Amstrad CPC... they said that CPC came somewhat out of nowhere to be a strong presence at Revision...
PRe-Revision, there was no generic oldskool, so beside C64 and Amiga you could go for Wild with other 8bit system, so no prods were released on CPC.

Truck aknowledged that Vanity came here and really released regularly things and came to Revision to show things and hold the flame.

Fact i there is a renaissance of CPC scene in everyway (it never quite died anywau) that may be tracked back to FromScratch release (and Pheelone, starting/continuing the rivalry we could see this year at Revision2018) IMHO.

BATMAN BEGINS despite all its success was mostly a catalist and some sort of a one-shot, yet it electrochocked the Amstradists and really, a nice gain in power and visibility occured since, with Demos despite not being as numerous as in other scenes (EX, C64...) having some high level of refinement, quality and eyes-bursting effects.

To me what was blatent this year :
>> the clash between CPC well used palette and the usual C64 palette.
We Come in Peace was nice, and came jsut after phX. Some effects were really comparable actually, others were very machine classics/specifics, yet we could appreciate that the regular C64 palette lacked the luster of the colourful CPC in some ways on some of those effects.
The horizontal tunnel (somewhat done by FlowerCorps on LUS at Revision) was all grea and shistain hues. the diagonal one lacked the hue gradiants, the sprites may get blurred/drawned by background using the same colours (due to limitations).
Also some effects on CPC have large huge gradiant as background, c64 had blemmish mono-Grey as background.
Also to see the border. when border and background are same colour in order to "hide" it, but the sprites/animation would still spot the border... this looks strange jsut after a fullscreen colourfull madness on CPC.
and really... C64 has sometimes nice SID sounds, it is good to have animated things such as disco balls or overlayed sprites, but border and greyish colours really are a let down in the end.

>> 2 CPC groups went to Revision to clash together and really fight for the win.
This aknowledges Revision as a real Amstrad event.
With both groups in different categories (Graphics, intro and demo) with real chances for podiums.

can't wait for the results, good lucks dudes.

I booted both demos on my cpc6128 which has a gotek with flash floppy and connected to a tft television via scart cable.

Sadly the tv didn't do the demos justice. (it doesn't really do any demos or games justice to be honest)

* First it showed the leftmost column which cpc monitors hide behind the bevel, so I saw some pixels that the authors didn't intend me to see.
* The pixels in phx were a bit too clean, with less blending of colours  so some of the clever pixel dither was not as nice as it should be. Some dithers it just ruined and were hard to look at.
* And it didn't like the horizontal rupture in the first part of Onescreen Colonies  :'( I saw a black screen until the arkanoid inspired part came on.

So I couldn't watch them completely on a real cpc.

It is sad that some people like me will see them this way and will not enjoy them exactly as designed :(

Thank goodness for good youtube videos.

This is something I've often thought about too.
I used to always insist on watching all CPC creations on the real machine, to be sure I saw them as their creators intended. So I'd always wait till I had the necessary time to copy DSK, convert to HFE, copy to SD card etc. I thought it was somewhat respectful towards the creators.
But nowadays I must admit I've given up. Simply too much trouble too often. Nowadays I just wait for the YouTube video instead.

What's the reason behind this? I know different CRTC's behave differently. And of course, any LCD TV won't be able to display pretty much any CRTC effect regardless of chip version. But is that the only explanation?
Title: Re: Revision 2018

Ok results have cometh...

https://demozoo.org/parties/3537/#competition_14207
http://www.pouet.net/party.php?which=1550&when=2018

>> Oldskool graphics :
3rd Place : Smile! by BEB / Vanity

CED / condense 's  Inversio 8102 had 4thplace which is quite honourable.

the 2 "Amiga" entries were helped by the quality and the format specs (yeah Amiga is not a shitty graphic machine indeed) but to be honnest, while the dragon was well done I didn't liked its design.
The Flow of Time by MADE was great art composition and obvious winner...

>> oldskool intro :
1st Place : isometrikum by vanity (cpc)

Well deserved and no contest, by a nice margin according to the votebars during the ceremony.

>> oldskool demo :
2nd place : phX by condense.

Very close second place according to the vote bars. Fairlight has many friends and great SID music and the commodorks always reign supreme.  ;D

onescreen colonies was probably 4th place, a shame as it was mindblowing technically, but too short I guess to really win in this category/compo... the VIC20 demo was a serious contestant and was a full demo, with more contents/sequences which was a help in the competition for this category.

Sadly we dedin't get any double podiums from amstrad, but at last one Winner (oldskool intro, no contest), and classics 2nd or 3rd places.

Prized Amstrads in every categories is still great and to have two groups o actually compete against each others on CPC was a sign of maturity and visibility for the Amstrad demoscene..

Also Vanity proved that Amstrad can actually win in the oldskool intro, which was often a difficult category for CPCs.
Last year's entrie Wunderbar didn't make it (4th place, argh), or best place/prize was 3rd place in 2012.

VANITY and CONDENSE totally rocked this year, well done.

Next year it may be nice to have some Amstrad games or even Amstrad "wild"to compete there as well.
 ;)

Yes, AMAZING TIME @ Revision 2018 !

That was a personal pleasure to meet some people for the 1st time (they know who they are). Just for that, my trip from Canada was great !  :-*

The Amstrad was particularly well represented this year. I'm personally amazed by the Vanity productions, pretty solid. Those guys never stop pushing the limits..... Respect.

Our Condense demo was also well received, and honestly I feel comfortable with the 2nd place. What to expect when releasing an Amstrad demo in Germany a.k.a. "C64-Land" ?! CensorDesign+Fairlight demo (C64) is good, they deserve their 1st place (given the context).

I'd like to apologize to the German CPCists who were present, I was so busy coding, wanting to make progress as much as possible, that I didn't find the time to discuss much with some of you. This will be repaired next year(s)!

Or maybe this summer, if some of them wants to come to "RESET MEETING" !!! (Commercial break)
http://reset.cpcscene.net/

The most stunning french CPC meeting, with low prices, free good food, nice individuals unexpensives sleeping rooms, clean showers, jugglers & bears trainer.... Awesome :)

Where/when will we see a bit more pictures ?

i updated a few CPCwiki pages but those are stil stubs, feel free to modify as needed.

It is not because there are several coders and that effects are not all originals that the work is weak.

I do not understand this trend in the CPC demoscene that is not as objective as it should be.
Yes there are better demos on C64 but releasing something should be considered as a prowess.
By the way, if you apply the same way of judgment to CPC:
 - Isometrikum is just an hardware scroller with a sprite routine -  Onescreen Colonies is just an original scroler - phX is mainly a set of line to line spliting screens

Seen on POUËT... that's so typical.

A 10-men prod with the usual C64 recipes.

And the demo wasn't even THAT better.

 :(

post Edit : yeah I am an opposite side fanboy as well...
Oh and where was C64 in the intro orgraphic compos ?

Off course I am an even bigger troll.
 :P

Concerning Fairlight's demo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHRwFrVPM7A

To be honnest :
I quite liked the particle effects on the texts at the begining ( 0:25 - 0-33 )
the text zooms just after (with sound effects) are nice too.

the "diagonal" part with overlayed text/sprites (0:50 - 1:15) suffers from the limited palette IMO.

the" horizontal tubular tunnel" as well (1:22 - 1:42) ,  it looked better on CRTC3 from Roudoudou... they failed to introduce some sort of dithering to smoothen the palette.

Following verticall multiscreen graphic screen with effect is nice but the white background and the limited C64 palette looks quite... boring after the colourfull colour explosion from phX. still a great pixel art and effect.

Nice to have a tribute to Hawking (but boring part)

the "liquid splashes" sequences from 2:28 - 2:38 was the msot impressive to me.

the "kefren bars" ? (2:40 - 3:10) suffered comparison with the doubled and coloured ones from the phX demo and were a let-down..

the "balls" scrolltext is not easy to read and the blank grey background also lacks in my opinion. (3:10 - 3:22)

the part at 3:24 - 4:01) is well animated but to have background and some border in the same colours just add to the border issue... I don't like when the objects seems to disapeare into the invisible border, which never happen in the CPC demo (border being the real screen limit). But the "3D" movement is nice, clearly one of this demo's moneyshot and highlight.

4:06 - 4:59 : The "rotating facet balls" are nice concerning animation, c64 is great for those facetted things, but the "invisible border" and limited palette ruins it for me again.
I quite prefer when they start to assume the borders at 4:45 - 4:59, as it gives a richest feeling to the global screen.

Last part : 5:00 - to the end.
A classic huge horizontal scroll screen (very smooth scrolling) with overlayed sprites/text is a classic strenght from C64.
Not bad overall but the palette is a bitboring again and shows limitation IMO.

Transitions are well mastered as usual from those guys.
Music are well mastered SID tune... this pleases the audience at such party but I have to admit I am not that much of a SID fan..

So yeah I feel phX was a bit better but this is not what gives you certain victory anyway, especially as I wasn't there to vote.

I'll look at it as soon as possible, there should be things to steal in your build system and data generator ! I'll look at your circles routines because I still do not understand why you are limited to 2

I have finally some questions: I think  phX is the very first demo that does not work on a standard 3" disc (today I have no idea if it is "fair" or not):
  - do you plan to release a 3" discs version ?  - did the revision organizers asked you to justify that ?

Not sure I will finally look t the balls screen, too much investment to dig in ;)
I have to admit that I'm (positively) surprised of the implementation of the tunnel. I guess I would have chosen more complex, more memory intensive way for not a better result

As I said to you at Revision, I used EXX to switch between the 2 bobs data. For each scanlines (64 nop) I need to manage left edge bob 1 + right edge bob 1 + left edge bob 2 + right edge bob 2 + update raster. Don't forget for each edge to have to manage a blank byte to "clear" data (when displaying second half part of a circle).
I would be surprised to see 3 bobs of similar size moving fullscreen on CPC one day, but if there would be one I would be quite impressed :)

Phortem was the first.

Quote
do you plan to release a 3" discs version ?
No. Version released @ Revision was the final one.
The only complain I got with Phortem was a comment from Super Sylvestre, which I did not focus much since he had the hardware to launch the demo anyway.
Nowadays, I believe people watch the demo like that:
- 85% youtube
- 10% emulator
- 4% old devices (SDCard, USB, 3"1/2..)
- less than 1% for 3" ?

Quote
did the revision organizers asked you to justify that ?
They don't care.
Keep in mind modern storage devices (SDcard, USB & co) attached to the machine are the new standard. C64 have the Ultimate-II for years.
Now if the machine would come with many attached expansions I think they would probably start asking questions.

Thanks !

If you want to dig for some "gem" in my source-code, I recommend looking at those files
They can eventually be reused with any another projects, independently from phX.
Code: [Select]
src/Z80/Framework/_PreProcsNops.z80
src/Z80/Framework/CallLinesNops.z80
src/Z80/Framework/PreProc.z80

But honestly, it's already pretty difficult for me to understand my own code few weeks later - so I can imagine how hard it may be for someone not used to the code base :)

Wish you happy digging!

Well, not sure? maybe you should investigate on some real new effects instead of iterating again and again on existing effects. There are still plenty of new stuff to show on CPC ! :)

Yep, it comes "as is". With some luck some people may eventually find interesting approaches even without the presence of comments.

My 6128 newly has this pjotr internal gotek clone. And I was positively surprised when I put the dsk on a usb stick and sucessfully booted the demo without connecting any external rom (I didn't expect that). So the complete 80-track handling is included in the demo/trackloader itself.

Not really, there were plenty before. One of my first demos from 1994 already needed a double-sided 80 track drive (so speaking Vortex format on 5.25" or 3.5" drive, like it's common today).  :)

It's nice to have stuff on 3", but it's way more cool to use new hardware to the fullest IMHO.  :)

Uhh ? No.. do you think he looks like him ?
there is no reason to caricature longshot in this production...

It's about vertical splitting technics, so I tried to paint Chany's face :) :) :)
Title: Re: Revision 2018
Post by: rexbeng on 21:39, 09 April 18
Hahah!

Well, I thought it could be Longshot because I didnt make the connection to Chany. But I find the idea to make a graphical reference to (past) sceners really fabulous! I hope you keep it in your next demos!

By the way; the balance between the graphics and the code (or the code and the graphics) is amazing, both in OSC and Isometrikum. Great job Hicks and Beb!  :-*
Title: Re: Revision 2018

To be honest it's a Russian cosmonaut. Because I like the idea of colonizing other planets ...
And initially we hoped to make a production more on this theme. (And life goes on...)

For the vertical splitting, I'll have to draw Overflow, Duncan, Gozeur, Chany or Ramlaid.
The real CRTC technicians... before Hicks landed;)

Thank you for everything.

Title: Re: Revision 2018

On CPC-Power website  you can see how many sectors are used per side.
Side 1: 427 sectors
Side 2: 411 sectors
Size 2 Sectors are 512bytes long so one side is 213kb and the other 206kb.
A 3p floppy disk can handle 42 tracks of 10 T2 sectors per side. (to be compatible with this version)
So a 3p version can be build (maybe removing the intro loading gfx)

Lol what was Breaking Baud then ?
 ;D

You know, Krusty means that the "PHX trackmo" can't be run on a "stock machine" because Amstrad CPC(+) were sold only with a "tapedrive" or 3p diskdrive. But I agree today everybody have a 3,5p diskdrive or an HXC-like hardware. (norecess explained this well)

Nobody complained about this little hardware problem at Revision-Party...

Hoping that people have the same indulgence for some of our demos, not necessarily compatible with some hardware ... ;)

When I came to the Revision 2018, I asked Carlos Pardo a.k.a. "Made" to come with a poster (check his website (http://m4de.com/) for more information). I always enjoyed his work for the demoscene (but not only), if you remember well I even interviewed him on my website (http://norecess.cpcscene.net/interview-made.html).

The idea was to let friends at Revision 2018 sign the poster so I could bring home a unique souvenir of the party.

Have signed:
- Krusty
- Optimus
- Alkama
- Kangaroo
- Soundy
- Offset
- BSC
- Zik
- Mars
- Toms
- Hicks
- Prodatron
- me :)
- Made
- Octoate
- TotO
- Beb
- CeD
- Factor6
- Overflow
- Targhan
- Eliot
- Longshot

Looking at this thing is now going to give me infinite motivation for future productions in the years to come ! :)
Thanks !!!

Just few words to let you know that I participated to the Mystery Demoscene Theater 9000 S03E06 ! With introspec and psenough (Pantaloon/Fairlight could not make it on the very last minute, unfortunately !), we discussed about oldschool demoscene for about 1 hour and a half (with some focus on Revision 2018 prods). That was fun!
