Yeah, it sort of took the whole fun out of it. Where's the earth destroying asteroids they promised us? The apocalypse isn't as exciting as I expected.

They had better hurry up and translate it, because at midnight (German local time) the world will be ended.

Fireworks and a football match! Nice.

I missed two songs, or "Hymns of the end of the World", "goodbye my small ?? ".

Apocalypse Brunch... nice touch

Damn. So I spent all that money to send the wiki db+data on a satellite for nothing? I HAVE NO HOUSE NOW, DAMN GEEKS OF THE MULTIVERSE!
Title: Re: End of the world...
Post by: Bryce on 18:41, 22 December 12
Don't worry, I built the satellite out of old C64s, it will fall back to earth in a few days :) But it may be completely brown when it returns.

So you're telling me that I gave all my money to put the HDD on a satellite with no life expectancy at all. Thanks

After buying all the solid fuel for the boosters, you're lucky it didn't end up being controlled by a Spectrum. Spectrum satellites smash into the nearest rainbow, know as "catastrophic colour clash" in the satellite launching business.

The really bad news is, I took out a really huge loan to fund the endeavour. I figured, what the heck, never going to buy that Chase HQ II cart now the world is ending, better take a 1000-year loan for something more realistic...

Turns out the Mayan calendar was actually counting down the roll-out project for a new, upgraded Earth;

QuoteFROM: The I.T. Department
SUBJECT: The Earth v2.0 Roll-Out Project final checks.

Dear all,

Thanks muchly for all of your hard work over the past 10 millenia, but we are gradually moving the Earth v2.0 project to its conclusion.

Bar a couple of .dll issues with our new Windows8 machines, we believe we can go ahead and update the world to v2.0 on Friday 21st December 2012 as originally planned by our Mayan benefactors.

So, here's to a Brave New World, people. See you all on the other side.

Regards,
The IT Department, GODs of technology!

And then they had to send another one after the event didn't quite go to plan!

QuoteFROM: The I.T. Department
SUBJECT: Re: The Earth v2.0 Roll-Out Project final checks.

Sorry guys, one of the Windows 8 machine crashed this morning, taking the whole project with it! Backups included, I'm afraid. We will have to postpone the Earth v2.0 update to some point in the future once we've had time to recover as much data as we can from the fried HDs.

Blame Microsoft for this, not us! ;-)

Regards,
The IT Department, GODs of technology!

Oh well, maybe next time, huh?

Re: Nostradamus - wasn't the 9 Circles referring to the alignment of the Planets? We came close in 2000, but that was only 6 planets, guess we'll just have to find out what happens when 9 are aligned (if we're still around  :D ), who knows it might just be the cycle will start all over again without consequence.  :D

I don't know how many planets Nostradamus knew of, but it was not nine, and it still isn't nine.
Isn't there something about the nine circles of hell?

Bloody sneaky those Black Helicopters hey? I mean a couple of years ago I was driving down the new bit of carriageway between Abbeyfeale and Castleisland, nothing else on the road, minding my own business, cruising along at 140mph and suddenly out of nowhere a black helicopter dropped down low beyond the bridge I was about to go under, facing me. Bloody brilliant though, I felt like I was in something like Ridge Racer :D:D:D

Do you also wear a tin foil hat to stop them reading your mind? An old dorm mate convinced me they really do work and while I am not totally convinced I certainly see less black helicopters these days :)

It would be nice to know the age of the planet which is now part of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and when it was destroyed.  :D  Probably long before Nostradamus.

Pluto has since been replaced with other planets.  :D

@Beaker: Tinfoil was yesterday. Today's paranoid have a transmitter in their hat transmitting false thoughts :D

@AMSDOS: I thought the asteroid belt were fragments of the primordial solar nebula that never achieved accretion due to the size of the neighbouring planets? But I could be wrong. I never really paid attention in Astro :)

Transmission of false thoughts is not safe enough, as "they" could determine the true thoughts by collecting all the false thoughts and see what's left.

You need proper randomisation, like a radioactive source where the particles measured during radioactive decay determine which one of the true and false thoughts shall be transmitted.

Implementing the enhancements for my tinfoil hat now! The only question left iswhere to find a radioactive source. :D

This is bizarre because I was watching QI last night and Stephen Fry was talking about the discovery of Radium which is highly radioactive and how in the early days it was used in a great many things. Which includes watches for lighting up the hands. I wonder if that's what they use for the Analog watch faces these days?

In the 70s when I grew up, I was told that the watches' hands contained phospor.

That's probably what it is. I think the discovery of Radium was far earlier than that and by the time the 70s came around they would have most certainly know about the dangerous of it. QI were stating that back during the discovery of it, radium was used in many things and people were dying of all sorts of horrible diseases.

In contrast, its radiactivity is very weak. Therefore you can still find it in nature after billions of years after its creation in a sun. 226-Ra has a half life of 1602 years. Other elements have half lives of only parts of secons.
That shit coming from Tschernobyl had half lives between weeks and few years. That was highly radioactive  :) ;)
