A game I was slowly coming to believe does not actually exist. A game I just assumed to be the DOS version of Contra... Well, it has been found!

Gryzor

Um... ahem? Anything more than a titlescreen?

mgman

Well, seeing as how it's pretty much the same as DOS Contra, you can easily find a video of DOS Contra:

I made a DOSBox config for this game and added it to a ZIP.
Just unzip, launch dosbox.exe and when you see the game message, press enter...
Have fun!

Perhaps you should change the amount of cycles in dosbox.conf ;)

Hmm, that's pretty interesting.

I wonder how that release even managed to disable the bugged "copy-protection" scheme... In any case, yep that's CONTRA :)

How about Gryzor? :D Can I post that?

arnoldemu

Gryzor has already been found, he is here on this forum

Are you suggesting he needs to be rebooted into DOS mode?

No, but I do suggest someone give a good kick in the arse to his US counterpart :P

mgman

Sort of. That one is kinda excusable :P

mgman

Oh, you know what?

There's no harm in it. An admin linked to the Contra DOS, so here's Gryzor DOS:

Gryzor

Thank you for both the file and the DOSbox config.

Though, in all fairness.... I shoudn't have seen that. My eyes popped out and my ears bled, badly.

How come this that Gryzor/Contra only got lame Computer ports but CPC's one ?

mgman

Are you kidding? With no offense, the ZX Spectrum version is pretty damn good.

The all others (which isn't a lot) are bad. The DOS and C64 versions.

Whether an Amiga Gryzor exists is questionable.

Ok, nice scrolling and sound effects...
But... Colour clashes or monocolour games are some sort of a handicap to me...
You simply can't see the action properly (the enemies shots).

Also it seems a bit slow on this video.

But yeah, for a speccy this is far from being bad.

Yet I understand poeple to tell CPc version sucks because it doesn't scroll...
To me it was more some sort of additionnal difficulty.
You had to anticipate the screen change... so you needed to remember the game a bit more.

Midnight Resistance was perhaps a good ersatz...

MSX ? (or MSuX ?)
let's see...
This must be MSX2 cartridge I guess...

no scrolling either ?
the sprites are oddly animated (a bit ... like a broom in the @$$...)
Graphics are... like NES perhaps... not that good anyway.
Good tune as it sounds like some arcade game (MSX had shitton of extra stuff...)

I have played many different versions on various systems and still prefer the CPC one by a mile;  better graphics with nicer colour scheme, even the sound is better IMHO, plus the gameplay is more puzzle-like, rather than just mindless random slaughter as in so many other games.  Yep the CPC version for me is one of my all time favourite games of any system.

Actually, that game is Contra, not Gryzor, for MSX. A lot of ROM files are misnamed as Gryzor and many sites call it so as well.
