I have just bought this atrocity...
« on: 12:58, 24 June 17 »
out of curiosity.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16-BIT-HANDHELD-PORTABLE-PXP-PVP-GAMES-CONSOLE-150-RETRO-MEGADRIVE-DS-VIDEO-GAME-/332161781255?epid=1127913694&hash=item4d56628e07:g:4ZgAAOSwuLZY0iYQ

does anyone have one of these? Do they even work for more than 20 minutes?

A guy made a review of the device and it seems to be really something. Look at that Mario!

I bought one of these on a fleamarket some years back:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/LEXIBOOK-JL2375B-Lexibook-Compact-Arcade/dp/B012ADNC18

I couldn't resist, because it was only 7 euro. But it did end up in a box for a year or so before finally trying it out.
My then 5-year old daughter quickly got hooked on it, and she still plays it even today. Lots of arcade classics in various versions. Low quality of course, but it doesn't really matter that much.

There's also a version of Mario's Cement Factory on it, which I personally find interesting.  :)
Overall I think this was the best buy for value we did that year... hehe

Exactly that one! I had not seen the video until now, hehe  :) . So, yes, my thinking was exactly the same "It's 10 pounds. Even if you have to toss it straight away into the bin, it is worth trying to see if it works"  :D

I bought one recently and its the best $20 I have spent in a while.
It has a backlit lcd, whats not to like? Plays Sega Megadrive games which are included!
It even plays directly on your tv via composite out with sound.
The video cable is very cheap and nasty though, a bit to short for me.
Easy enough to replace with something longer
The "cartridges" have no electronics in them they are just jumpers.
I did a mod that allows you to access all the games by pressing start or select button on startup/ reset.
This gives you access to the two extra cartridge menus without using them.
No need to use the cartridges the games are all stored onboard.

There is also a mod to put in a bigger battery cause you don't need the cartridge slot.

So I ordered one of these for my son... We now fight over whose turn it is. My opinion:

The graphics are absolutely top.
The speed is pretty much spot on.
The sound is dodgy, but ok.
The button touch and feel is terrible as is the quality of the case.
The battery life is very good (still on first charge after 5+ hours of gaming).
TV connection works as advertised, but on a 50in TV it's extremely blocky.

Unfortunately there's no indication of remaining battery capacity, so the battery EOL might be a sudden suprise.

Bryce.

I received mine 2 days ago and I agree with basically everything  :) If the feeling of the buttons was OK, it would be really great! Particularly surprised by the screen, how cheap can it be? and still looks super fine.

I definitely intend modding the buttons, so if I do I'll post a guide.

Speed can be a bit variable as especially if you are playing on a TV as it forces the console down to 50Hz.

The emulation is not accurate but for the price you can't argue.

TV connection is a very poor composite connection. Signal timing is terrible and the connector is tiny and as you move the console the connection can be impacted.

That said, as I pointed out in my review it costs next to nothing. It's disposable Megadrive gaming for the beach this Summer.

The fun didn't last long. The cartridge socket is held to the PCB with two tiny plastic tags, which have already failed. This meant that the 4 solder joints and thin copper tracks were taking the whole pressure of insertion. Needless to say, it ripped the tracks off the PCB. I repaired it last night and took a look at the buttons, there's not really enough space to put a decent solution inside, but maybe I need to look at it longer.

Interestingly, as mentioned in the video, the cartridges don't contain anything more than a few jumpers, no EPROM or whatever. All the games are in the device and the cartridge is just doing bank switching. The cartridge has 4 connections, GND and 3 inputs, but it only came with 2 cartridges. So shorting the third pin, may give you a whole new bank of games, but I haven't tried this yet (it was late).

Couldn't a dip switch block be added so you can configure the cartridge to play any of the available games?

Yes, you could just add a cheap switch in the console to replace the cartridges completely, but my son likes the cartridge swapping bit.
