Free Stanford online courses
« on: 01:56, 09 October 11 »
For the first time, Stanford University 8)   is offering some of its official courses, in full with the homework assignments and exams. And it's free for everyone!
The classes are 10 weeks long. And the teachers expect us 10 hours of study per week per course.

Here are the 3 courses offered:
So I signed for all the classes ;D I don't know how far I'll go, but it's worth a try I think.
If you want to participate too, be swift to register! The courses are starting by October 10.

Yup, am already signed up to the 'Introduction to Artificial Intelligence' course.... looking forward to making a start on Monday!

I'm interested in the subject but also just how they are going to use technology to handle 190,000 people and 40 languages. It should be fun!  As to coding, I was actually seriously thinking of using the CPC 6128 to write any code that is needed for the algorithms etc...  just for fun, y'know  8)

(If we need to collab. on anything, feel free to PM me)

As I and ynot.zer0 have been able to sign up, I guess it's not. ;)

Also the courses are real Stanford courses, but the certificate won't be issued by Stanford University. It will only be a certificate of accomplishment signed by the teacher.
So the value of it for curriculum purposes is near 0.
But the real value is in the knowledge generously given by world-class teachers 8)

The courses are open to everyone, worldwide.  no restrictions.  They're even going to translate the video lessons into local languages.

After a few hours hunting around, I've found my Amstrad AI book : http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/AMSTRADS_and_Artificial_Intelligence

This sounds like a very interesting book... especially the first chapter they mention!

The first homework result is up on ai-class! And I think it would be nice to compare our scores.
The first chapters of the course didn't looked very complicated imho. But still, I managed to mess up the homework: 92% correct :(

But I found some of the questions were a bit unsound too. What's your feeling about them?

edit: Here where I was wrong:
  • HW1.2 Loaded Coin: continuous question. I answered yes while the "correct" answer was no.
There was indeed 2 problems to solve. Whether the coin is loaded or not, and what the probability it is.
If we consider the 1st problem, I agree it's discrete (classification problem). But for the 2nd problem, we want an output between [0,1]. So it's continuous in my book.
  • HW1.6 Search network : left-to-right depth-first question. I answered 10 while the "correct" answer was 16.
The problem is titled "Search network", so I figured it was a graph we were talking about and not a tree.
But i agree that if it was a graph, there would be no notion of left-to-right or right-to-left as nodes are not ordered that way on a graph. So It was a bad assumption on my part. Still I think the word "network" was a bit misleading.

Mmmh well... no :D

I looked briefly at the manuals, AmsBase and Masterfile databases don't have a query parser (much less an SQL one). :'(

Ok guys, I have to admit I've fallen behind in the courses and I'm thinking to give up, at least the AI and ML classes. :(
The learning material is very good, no doubt about it, but time is scarce unfortunately...

On other news, Stanford is offering no less than 13 new classes, and a re-run of the ML class too, in early 2012!

You can find info about it here: http://jan2012.ml-class.org/
