Being sick with the flu this entire week, I've been killing time watching movies on DVD and CPC longplays on YouTube, along with other YouTube stuff. Interesting what you can find out.

The music played in Batman the Movie sounded very familiar, as it's also an extended module (xm file) called Suspiria.

Neat hearing "an Amstrad version" of Suspiria. :)

And the game Gryzor looks very much like the game Contra for Nintendo.

(Other videos by The Irate Gamer is also quite entertaining).

And then I've spent time watching lots of movies, including the old Bloodsport movie which I hadn't seen for years. Talk about nostalgia. 80 music and video-games flashback.

Actually Gryzor and Contra are the same game, but as it was not politically correct to use the word contra outside Japan, it was renamed to Gryzor.

As far as I understand, Gryzor is UK-specific.  US versions of the game are titled "Contra", with Japanese versions titled the same, but in Kanji.

The title "Probotector" has been used for European market for console versions.
"NOP" is the perfect program : short , fast and (known) bug free

Heheh will listen to that mod tonight!

A funny thing I discovered a few weeks back; I had been playing Rainbow islands on my arcade cabinet, and at night I watched with my girlfriend which featured Judy Garland's version of Over the Rainbow (watch it on YouTube if you don't know which one I'm talking about, it's beautiful). And it struck me! It's the same song, only in Rainbow Islands it's sped up!!!!!

About Gryzor: indeed, the original name was Contra, as a reference to the US-backed and funded paramilitaries that fought against the Sandinistas who had staged a successful revolution against a right-wing dictatorship. Since the whole story was a scandal of world proportions (especially when it was revealed that the Contras were funded by coke money - and the coke was indirectly being put on the streets by the CIA), it was deemed that a name change was appropriate...

The plot is quite simple:
You can play against computer or against a 2nd player.
The field contains 8x8 blocks.
half of them have positive points, the other half negative.
Player 1 can move left- and rightwards,
Player 2 can mode up- and downwards.
You must collect a block each round.
The player, who owns the most points, wins.
(game against computer: when you win, you can proceed to next screen)

Simple game available:

You can play against yourself.
Sorry, not correct yet, so when you get stuck, press ESC to restart
Use mouse or cursor keys to select block.
Use space or mousebutton to take it.
