Title: Your Top 5 JRPG
Post by: sigh on 19:54, 06 December 20
In no particular order(these are all PS1):

1) Parasite Eve - enjoyable playable character and a fun battle system.
2) Koudelka - Although the battle system isn't great, the characters, story and good voice acting make it feels like a play. Wonderful creepy monster designs and cool sound effects, rounds it off nicely.
3) Grandia - lovely art work and a fantastic battle system. The voice acting is a tad annoying.
4) Xenogears - An epic world and fun story. The second disk could of done with a bit more fleshing out. The anime cut scenes, and detail animated sprites along with brilliant sound track really give you a full package.
5) Star Ocean Second Story - epic battle system. Everything looks manic with spells exploding all over the screen. Love it!

Honourable mentions - Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, Persona 3, Stella Deus, Shadow Hearts Covenant, Resonance Of Fate, Valkyrie Profile.

Nice topic!  Here are mine, again in no particular order:

Secret of Mana (SNES) - nonlinear design, gorgeous visuals and music, multiplayer, the complete package!
Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES) - sequel to SOM, probably the best 16bit graphics ever IMO, replayability is endless with the character and class system
Final Fantasy V (GBA) - the job system is extremely addictive
Etrian Odyssey III (DS) - the Etrian games have the best balancing of any series I have ever played and this one is the pinnacle of the series for me.  They should only be played in hard mode to fully appreciate the masterwork in balancing.
Dragon Quest VII (PS1) - I've played 1-9 and I'm not sure why but this is the one that sticks with me the most.  Also it is crazy long.

I can't say that I've played a lot, but the ones that I have fond memories of are:

Grandia II (Dreamcast) - I loved this back in the day and rarely for me, actually completed it! I never played any other games in the series, although I remember Sega Saturn Magazine raving about the first one on import.

Chrono Trigger (SNES/DS) - I started playing this back when I first got into SNES emulation and later picked up for the DS (and flogged on eBay, sadly!). Probably my all-time favourite, although I've never actually completed it!

Ni No Kuni (PS3/Switch) - I love the Studio Ghibli films, so this appealed to me as soon as I saw it. I eventually picked it up in a PS Store sale and hardly played it, and much more recently re-picked up for the Switch - this time I'm getting into it (about 10 hours in currently)!

Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast) - I picked this up cheaply for the Dreamcast back in the day and recall enjoying it. I just saw the price it's going for on eBay - I wish I'd held onto it for a bit longer!

Ooh a hard one :-)
I'm going to be a little controversial with my entries.
(in no particular order)

Chrono Trigger: Awesome game. the multiple ending mechanism is intriguing. I've beaten it twice.
Final Fantasy VII: First JRPG I ever played. Beat it once. Ugh that last boss.
Mario RPG - Secret of the Seven Stars: Possibly the most fun RPG I have ever played. Funny, intriguing, complex. Beaten it exactly once. Played it a lot.
Final Fantasy VI: Shows what can be done with a SNES. Deeply emotional game. Haven't finished this one, but got to the final world.
Kingdom Hearts 1: Before it got all... strange. Beat all but the last boss.

I don't think it really counts but if it did, I'd add Paper Mario: The Thousand year Door.

Cheers!

I have played very little of the SNES rpg's, though I did play Chrono Trigger when it was remastered for the PS1. I enjoyed it and got to the final boss, but I left it for about a year and had no idea (forgot) what I was doing when I came back to it - so never completed it.
I also played Chrono Cross, but didn't enjoy the battle system.
I have also been watching the Legend of Mana on youtube, which is an interesting looking scrolling beat em up/RPG hybrid.

Nice topic, let's add something here - my personal list:

Shin Megami Tensei (SNES) - the predecessor to Persona, and the first RPG that I used to learn japanese. I like the story and the strange setting - this game is refreshingly different to many others, and was at that time an outstanding appearance - and still is. You feel if a game was just made to get it on the market. This title proves that Atlus is a professional software maker that is capable of creating stories beyond the mainstream - and be successful with it. I won't recommend this title to beginners of the japanese language - the vocabulary is special and far away from everyday speech.

ペルソナ2 罰  (PSX / PSP) - great title - the best in the Persona series in my opinion. I love the music, the grafics, the story, the personas. I found the bosses a bit too difficult as the game progresses.

Final Fantasy VII (PSX) - the best game ever made. It's still better than FF VII Remake - from the viewpoint of immersion, and also because of the sound and music which could not be topped by the remake. And also because in todays times things get ripped off a game in a remake if the developers think is does not match todays taste or when it conflicts with todays thinking in terms of political correctness. Immortal is the 7 hours long video showing people starting to cry and going nuts on the announcement of the FF7 Remake on the EEE in 2015, this will never happen again for another title in gaming history: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUMdx3ezW9s

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo Switch) - a beautiful and nice RPG, technically perfect, a great and consistent world, and one of the rare games nowadays which is not drenched in blood. We played it to get corona away. It helped!

Neon Genesis Evangelion 2: Tsukurareshi Sekai - Another Cases (PSP). For lovers of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime. I you ever wanted to be Shinji Ikari, here you go. I personally would choose Gendo instead - I think you can switch between some of the characters (haven't done that yet), but I believe Gendo is not among them.

BONUS: Okay, not really an RPG, but I would like to mention it here:

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim (PS4) - beautifully designed characters and background artwork, the story and development of the characters is sound and convincing, as you start to like the protagonists the development of their stories is one of the addictive parts of the game.
