I used to own Panzer Bandit on PS1. It was the answer to Gaurdian Heroes on the Saturn. It wasn't as good, but still a very fun game!

PSX Longplay [144] Panzer Bandit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhooP1baQQc#)

Also, there was Crisis Beat which had some fun moments.

Crisis Beat - Gameplay PSX / PS1 / PS One / HD 720P (Epsxe) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CjXlUHegqs#ws)

Both of these games are 2 player co-op.

Edit: I forgot about Captain Commando. I never owned it as it was rather expensive for what it was.

Panzer Bandit might be good but it's japanese (I don't know if you're just talking PAL releases or something).
Hot Blooded Family (also known in Japan as Nekketsu Oyako) looks decent in videos I've seen.

And... um... not sure about other 2D ones of that era but the Capcom Collections include late 80's/early 90's classics such as  Final Fight, Captain Commando, The King of Dragons, Knights of the Round.

PS1 didn't really have a lot of them as the genre was a bit deaded in the mid to late 90's and so was 2D (especially where the western Sony offices were concerned).

MAME tends to be the best way to play the majority of games in the genre as I do lots (faves include The Punisher, Alien Vs Predator, Battle Circuit, TMNT 1 & 2, Sengoku 3 and many others) though I also play several classics rereleased on PSN (with trophies and online multiplayer) which include The Simpsons, X-Men, the two arcade Dungeons & Dragons games, Streets of Rage 2 and probably some others I forget at present.

Yeah it's PAL games that Im looking for.

MAME does definitely seem the best route to take in order to play the side scrolling classics. I've never actually used it. I downloaded the emulator years ago and couldn't seem to get it working. I've never been a fan of emulators to be honest. I prefer using the original hardware where possible.

If you downloaded just regular MAME then yeah it's annoying to get running.  There are many versions that use a nice front end though such as MAMEUI32 which is what I use.

Maybe emulators a good way to sample a game before you spend silly monies on the real hardware and costs of the old games though.  :)

Recommended frontend for MAME or MESS is QMC2, it is Qt based, and can be built for Windows, Linux or OS X.

Well, I've downloaded and managed to get MAME working with the help of a YouTube tutorial.

Although I've only downloaded and tried one rom (marvel vs capcom super heroes) so far and haven't actually played it properly as I don't have a pc joystick/pad.

Can anyone recommend a decent arcade style stick for the pc?

CAPtain COMmando was so fun... the best, with D&D (Mistara and tower of doom) or final fight of course.

I have always been a fan of final fight myself. Piledrivers and smashing cars. Haggar the hero lol.

You could always buy a sega saturn/ps1 arcade stick and use a USB joystick converter for your PC. I have a USB converter that can take Sega Saturn,Dreamcast and PS1 pads and stick, which I use on my PS3.
