[ot]Intro:

So, a few weeks back She Who Wears Pants discovered my very mint Gameboy Pocket and started playing some Mario Bros game on it. Interesting thing, how different people see devices -and treat them- in their own way, because I actually found my GBP outside its original case, headphones wrapped around it, thrown in her purse like she does with her MP3 player. Eeeeek!!!  :picard:  Since I was already looking for a solution for her to play in the dark and Bryce told me that backlight mods are touch and go, I withdrew the GBP from circulation and got her a GBA SP. Grrreat! Then I remembered I actually have a DSi stashed somewhere given to me by a good friend, so I dug it out, and...[/ot]

My DSi is equipped with a R4i 3DS gold, so I'd like to ask you guys if you could suggest any nice retro games to play on it?

Further, for some reason, although DSi ROMs work just fine, GBA ROMs won't start at all. Is anyone familiar with the unit and can offer some advice? Specs read:

HW: R4i Gold 3DSb
Sys: NDSi 1.45&3DS6.2.0-12

Thanks!

Oh, also, I'm at a bit of a loss. This is the card I have:

Which firmware/kernel/whatever should I download? The web pages I've seen are a mess... :(

The problem is the DS can't run GBA games from the DS cart slot, they have to go in the (completely different form factor) GBA cart slot. Unfortunately that legacy slot was removed on the DSi.

The only real option is running an emulator, with all the caveats that entails.

Well, I do know that, that's why I mentioned ROMs. Supposedly the R4i doe run/emulate GBA games (I actually remember doing it and they show up in the filelist with correct GBA icons), but for some reason it stopped running them. I wonder if there's something else I have to download, but I can't find anything, and supposedly its fw can run them out of the box. If I'm not mistaken, that is.

I enjoyed Retro Game Challenge a lot: it is based on a japanes TV series where a guy tries to master some classic games. For the video game, they created some new games inspired by Galaga, Bump'n'Jump, Road Fighter or Shao Lin's Road, games that you have to play in a sort of competition against yourself  -but they are not just clones: the one resembling Shao Lin's Road, for example, is a mix between that, Konami's Goonies and USAS for MSX.

Also, Geometry Wars Galaxies has a sound retro-feeling and the DS version is not that bad:

The best DS homebrew ever made:

There's also some by me on this site:

You'll need a GBA emulator or a GBA (slot 2) flash cart on a regular DS/lite, (which obviously cannot be used on a DSi) to play GBA games.

I notice you mentioned 'retro' games for the DSi

Not sure if you liked the old Nintendo 'Game & Watch' series.
If you do/did, then there is a couple of 'Game & Watch' collections for the DS

Collection 1 includes Oil Panic, Donkey Kong, & Greenhouse.

Collection 2 included Parachute, Octopus, and a combination game with both Parachute & Octopus in the same game (Top & Bottom screens).
