So, I saw this tweet yesterday:

Retro Video Gamer ‏@RVGland  Mar 8
#amiga fans need to check this new book out from Castle Books

It's this book, £25. Hm, let's take a look, I thought. Turns out it's just a collection of the same old screenshots, along with some publishing data and a single (or at most two) sentence. So I told the guy (at that poitn I didn't know it was his book):

@RVGland So basically a few screenshots, some publication data and a one-sentence description for $40? Nah, don't think so...

And the following ensued:

@krakout PDF is available . It's all relative I guess.
@RVGland True, but it's still 5 quid more expensive than, say, Lemon Amiga  :D
@krakout agreed lol but it's a fan made product. #winsomelosesome
@RVGland Yes, but so is Lemon and every other site out there, with lots more content and more accessible...
@RVGland Hm, maybe I should sell a pdf of cpcwiki.eu. 100 quid sounds fair? :D
@krakout could say that about all books but I respect your decision.
@RVGland but... What does this book add in terms of original content to compare it to "all books"?
@krakout carry on lol.
@RVGland as in, "nothing to see here"? Agree...
@RVGland But you still haven't explained what is there in the book that justifies the 5 quid...
@krakout community spirit mate. That's what I do this for. Again I appreciate your opinion.

Now, I have a nasty cold and I'm a bit grumpy probably, but it miffs me that people have the gall to charge for some copying and pasting... Is that "community spirit"? Even Atari, Inc: Business is Fun, which is the worst retro book ever written actually had some effort put in it and (tons) of original (albeit of the lowest quality) text. So, charging 5 quid for a few screenshots - community spirit? Humph....

And I'm still waiting for the amiga book by Brian Bagnall... I never had an amiga, but I loved his book about the commodore company and this one was the follow-up to it.

Gryzor

Indeed, I'm waiting for that one myself. Cheaper than this one here, too! :D

kilon

He will get negative reviews and people wont buy it. Or even worse , he wont get any reviews at all  :P

Personally I don't see the point of buying a book for Amiga that only mention games. Copy paste or not. Unless it has to offer something special.

Gryzor

Well, it *could* be interesting; the title is intriguing - he could go on to explain *how* these games influenced game design and further titles. Do a proper analysis.

That I would consider buying, it all depends on the quality of the presentation. It may be something that I don't care about and then the way is represented is really entertaining and informative. That would make it worth buying indeed.

Putty change the word of games? Yeah !
They can't be serious. Anyway it's still neat book about Amiga games, with lots of pictures. ;)
In STARS, TREK is better than WARS.

Gryzor

I didn't look at the titles, didn't make it that far :D

If you like pictures, please send me £5 and I'll send you lots of CPC screenshots :)

Bryce

I always wanted to write an Amiga book and then call the summary "Recap" :D

Bryce.

Just get Bagnall's original book that covers both Commodore and Amiga years in one book.

Hi guys..

Just to clear this up..

I am zapiy and i run RVG and the twitter above.. I don't have anything to do with this book.. A member on our site has done 3 books already which you can see on his site.

I do think small projects like this are worthy of the retro scenes support.. but there ends my involvement.. i want to help him promote it.

I said i appreciate your opinion fella.. and i do, not everyone will buy it and i suspect he wont get masses of sales but again i support his work and the adventure that he is on.

BTW nice site.

What do you mean? At the back of the book there is an announcement of a new book called "Commodore: The Amiga Years" to be launched in 2012. But the project is still on hold.

I mean Brian Bagnall's On the Edge: the Spectacular Rise and Fall of Commodore. It covers the history of Commodore from the beginning to the end, including the Amiga years. Bagnall's Commodore: A Company on the Edge and the the yet unpublished Amiga Years is just the same thing extended and split to two. I admit that it is extended quite heavily as he manages to use the same amount of pages in just the first part of the new book as he used in the whole original book.

Oh, and I respect your taking the time to talk about it, both on Twitter and here - it's not like I don't understand your point of view. It's nothing personal. My post(s) were not an attack on you or the author of the book, but the book itself.

Thanks for coming here :)

By the way, On The Edge is a really great book, how company books should be written. Do get it, everyone!

Cheers. It's a great site you have, I just did not want people thinking I was taking credit for the book. I love Justin's work as he is just a fan like you or me and that's why I try and support people like him.

Thanks for clearing that up, I wasn't sure anyhow :) And thanks for the compliments!

I see, I have the 2010 version. Good to know  :)

Gryzor

...I bought it in 2006, what is the 2010 edition? :D

McKlain

Gryzor

I'm confused!

So: 2005, On the Edge, Rise and Fall. That's the one I've got.
2010: On the edge.

So, is the 2010 version really expanded? Worth buying again?

Thanks mate!
