Been a hell of a Dizzy weekend what with going to that event yesterday in Cambridge and playing the belated release of Wonderland Dizzy and got me thinking again hwo much I don't actually like the usual Dizzy sprite on the CPC versions of most of the games.   The bright green skin and the red eyes always had a zombie-esque look.

Decided to do a few sprite ideas but still within Mode 1 limitations (my stuff is usually Mode 0 so I figured I'd have a change and see if I could make CPC Dizzy look better within the same restrictions).   Stuck with the same palette except for one.  Changing that damn bright green to a darker colour so I could use it for better shading and manual anti-aliasing.  Chose a darker colour which works well as a blue, green or grey to suit all sorts of purposes such as water, plants and rocks and works well as a decent outliner for details too.   First did my version of classic Dizzy with two expressions (I actually did a lot of different expressions but just put two here) and then did a later Adventurer Dizzy with the hat (and nose that he has in artwork) and then did a bunch of the Yolk Folk too.   I think they came out well and are much closer to the idea of a 'cartoon adventure' that the Oliver Twins intended when creating the series.

You see, Mode 1 on the CPC can actually be very nice. Would love to see a Dizzy game with one of these sprites. On a real CPC natch.

They look really great, seriously!

Mode 1 is very nice for a lot of things (I love it in RPGs or adventures) however, I must admit that Crystal Kingdom Dizzy is, for my taste, the one with nicest graphics  :)

I like Crystal Kingdom a lot but I can understand why people don't (not just the graphic style is different but the level design is extremely different too with mostly flat platforms rather than the bumpy terrain of the previous games) but really what I was doing here was just trying to have a go at revamping the traditional Mode 1 Dizzy style to something more cartoon like and also more CPC-specific.  I like a lot of the detailed sprite and tiled work in them but they are still very much Spectrum style graphics on a CPC with pretty much only Zombie-Dizzy as the only CPC sprite.

Glad you guys like.  :)

I think it's some of your best work and would like to see them in a CPC version of the new game if we get it.

MODE 1 provides 4 colors but, using white, black, red and grey could be done in MODE 2 with black and white too. In mode 1 aside of white and black real colors should be used imho. Theat Crystal land mode 0 Dizzy sprite look nice though.

Sorry I can't make sense of that.  What does Mode 2 have to do with anything?  Is not a typical game resolution.   And what's a real color?

How to explain that? White and Black make Grey. And that dark red (which I don't see much anyway) is some kind of darker grey. Bollaware made some great games in MODE 2. There are great pics in 16 shares of MODE 0 grey.
Don't get me wrong I don't suggest to use MODE 2 (even if such an experiment would be nice). IMHO I would suggest to use MODE 0 or MODE 1 with Black, White and ...maybe Green/Blue, Orange/Green or, or or. As long as the colors are intense and colorful - kind of the opposite of Grey.
Sorry, I just can't put it in words in a better way. :)

Not sure why mentioning grey when there's no grey in the image.   There's a red (a default colour and useful for showing the red shoes/gloves and also things like fire.  Not sure why you called it dark red when it's actually just pure red 255, 0, 0), and a greenish/blue colour which as I said in the first post is very flexible for anything dark green/blue/greyish and is a great in between for black and white too (hence why I used it mostly in those sprites to smooth out the edges but also hint at the character's actual limbs you see in artwork but rarely ever in their sprites).    Besides with Mode 1 games they often changed a couple of the colours in the palette when going to a different screen for some variety or suggesting a different mood/atmosphere (for example changing to reds/oranges if the room has a lot of fire going on)  Head Over Heels being a decent example of the former.

I've actually done some tiles as part of a Dizzy mock up using the sprite style here (with magenta replacing the red to suit the spooky mood a bit more).   Done trees, grass, moon and moonlit clouds so far as well as a rough concept of a freaky ghoul character.   I'll post it here when I get it finished (it's not a priority at moment.  Been coding Roland of Sherwood tonight).

As told I don't see much of red, but some lower frequency UV though!  8)
