Title: Exorcist required
Post by: beaker on 23:12, 12 May 13
Just a bit of a background; I received Conkers Live and Reloaded through the post last week and my hard modded XBox (original not 360) won't read the disk. Looked at the disk and it seemed in pretty good shape. I know I thought, I'll try it on my original soft-modded XBox that's been in the loft for over a year. Sure enough the game loads fine and 2 hours later I turn off the XBox and grab a beer and something to eat. When I come back in, the XBox is still on. Strange as I thought I turned it off. So I turn it off and go to sleep and the next morning it's turned on again. Now it's doing it regularly sometimes immediately when I turn it off and sometimes 10 minutes later. I've unplugged the network adapter, controllers and DVD dongle., the power cord was from the old xbox but I've changed that.

Should I go to my local priest and ask for an exorcism to be performed on the console?

Edit: hmm, just noticed the green surge protection light is off on my 6 socket gang way... unplugged all my other consoles for the moment until I get another one...

If it's still doing it after you've changed the socket then I've an idea what might have failed. Do you have schematics for it?
If that doesn't work, I'll need a large wooden cross, incense, garlic and a bowl of warm water.

Thanks Bryce,

The situation has got a little worse after I posted last night and now the power button only works to switch the unit off  :o
During the night I am sure I saw the logo on top of the Xbox start spinning then the DVD drive draw opened and told me my "mother sucked c**ks in hell!!"  :o
I went down to speak to my local priest first thing this morning who looked at me strangely and then politely said he may know someone and that he would speak to them. 10 minutes later he returned and said that there are reports of possessed XBox's but an exorcism wouldn't work as Microsoft products have no soul. However, in some cases the demon in the possessed XBox would excrete ectoplasm on the board housing the power button and if I was to buy some rubbing alcohol he would bless it for me for a small donation to the church funds. He went onto say that I should use the holy rubbing alcohol to remove any ectoplasm I find, but that this could provide a short term solution and that the demon would reassert itself again in time.  :'(

I hate when they do that.

Either way, sounds like a flip-flop or whatever they use to monitor the power button has failed. I don't have any schematics for the X-Box, but if you can point me to them I can tell you what's broken.

Thanks Bryce, I did see this link about residue in the early hours of this morning and thought it may be worth a go if it's an easy fix?
My old xbox power button? - Yahoo! Answers (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100223150125AAlqrBS)

I'll see if I can find a schematic over the next few days. I can't see anything with a quick Google  search so I'll keep looking :)

I doubt that's the problem. If it was residue the button wouldn't work at all.
