No, it holds up pretty well against CGA and EGA really. Although poor old CGA always gets a lot of flak as it was really designed for NTSC colour artifacts, which would turn all those vertical stripes into other colours (hence what appears to be an awful palette selection)

Yeah, it irks me a bit every time I see emulated screenshots from such systems, they look even worse than the usual crisp 8 bit screenshots. Especially since I have little first hand experience with real systems so I don't quite know how these images translate in reality.

Most MDA, Hercules and CGA graphic cards used the same 6845 CRTC as the CPC. EGA was also the same core architecture but with enhanced functions in a custom chip.

Tip: Old CGA cards are a great source for 6845 spares :)
