I like the idea of this, showing people how to get into game programming can only be a good thing, but I'm not sure the live model is that good an idea.

I wonder if 4 hours a week of watching someone doing it is actually 4 hours a week where people aren't making their own games but watching him instead. You see, 4 hours a week isn't much progress in terms of actually creating something (so it'll take ages, by his own admission possibly 2016), but quite a lot of time for a lot of people to commit to.

I suspect most people might be better off watching the first few to get the idea that it's something that they can do and then just doing it and searching for the things they need when they hit a stumbling block. It's likely they'll hit problems in a different order to this guy, so waiting 6 months for him to cover it isn't really a practical solution.

Of course, where this project really would add benefit is as a recorded archive once the game is complete, so that people a couple of years from now can refer to specific episodes when they hit a problem of their own.

I watched the first episode and another episode on C++ programming (well, listened to it as I was doing some artwork) and what I got from it, is that the videos act like a tutorial. I can see this being very benefitial for someone like me if I were to delve into C++ programming as I treat the video's no differently than when I'm watching a tutorial on game maker or construct.

Your right in that the real benefit will come when the game is complete, so for this reason I think that the live model works well.

The presentation video made it interesting. Although later it was in a newschool hardware. And very long.
And I think one can easilly find other code videos on youtube.
