As I predicted, "Egg Game 157".

Hopefully it'll be ported to the Z80 systems as frankly the awful NES audio and sound sets my teeth on edge (I mean ALL NES games do this!). Hateful machine and the one bit of kit I never want to own.

I have just come from the presentation in Cambridge and it was really cool!  :D They even gave us a nice commemorative mouse mat and a mug  :-*

They game looks and plays really nice, I was trying it on a NES that was there and it definitely reminds you Fantasy World Dizzy, but they already told that during the presentation, hehe.

I really can't understand your hate for the NES, it's got some great games.

I do not really dislike any machine, to be honest, all of them have some charm  :) . Here are some pictures of the event.

This is the game running in a real NES.

Here is some interesting material that was around, including original maps.

Here is one of the prototype cartridges.

Here one of the few 6128 of the place running a Dizzy game.

And this is where the game was presented (notice the people concentrating in the corner that was full of food  :D )

A guy announced his intention to port the game to Spectrum, by the way :).

That's the important bit right there. If there's Z80 code available perhaps the CPC community could lend a hand and do it as a joint effort?

And mode 1 please. Dizzy looks rubbish in Mode 0.

Got really far in it then got stuck with just Dozy and Dylan left to rescue. Augh!

I really can't agree with that.  I loved my NES and often still listen to great soundtracks from it.  It's my fave 8-bit machine when it comes to audio anyways.

So nobody liked my Mode 0 Dizzy sprite?  Cos I kinda did.   I was never fond of the Mode 1 sprite (coloured green with red eyes like a zombie)

Anyways I'm hoping for a NES rom of the game.  I don't like playing games in browsers at all.  I want it running in a NES emulator I can play properly fullscreen with scanlines and play on my PSP to take out with me.  I had a quick go though and it's a fun game.

Never seen it but Crystal Kingdom looked awful in Mode 0. Colours, definition, it all looked like a C64 game.

And sorry but the tuneless chip in the NES puts my teeth on edge. I'd rather be in a room with a BBC Micro and its lack of volume control!

Oh well, different tastes.   Crystal Kingdom is one of my fave CPC games, not just Dizzy games.  I like the graphics (they could have been a bit better but I was just glad to finally see some proper colour and a fresh new look rather than the same exact sprites recycled once again) and I like how it feels to play and the in-game music is one of my fave tunes.

Tuneless?  Some of the best gaming music of all time was done on the NES so it can't be tuneless.   Maybe it's like my preference towards the AY chip over the SID cos I find a lot of C64 tunes 'over-produced' and a bit screechy or fuzzy compared to the 'cleaner' sound of their AY equivalents (SwitchBlade being a good example).

Captain Past

The SID will always be my favorite 8-bit soundchip, even though I agree that Switchblade sounds better on the AY. The NES has some really good game music. Its soundchip certainly isn't tuneless.
Imo Crystal Kingdom Dizzy is the best looking Dizzy game on the CPC. While the graphics guy of the C64 version failed to make a nice looking multi color Dizzy on that format, the graphics on the CPC are pretty good though not great.

I've never been a fan of the green-tinted Dizzy on the CPC. I was so very happy when that disappeared for Spellbound Dizzy (although I'd have happily taken the "rotten Dizzy" look over falling damage  ).

Funny they're running that old Dizzy game on a 6128 with SD emulator instead of a real floppy. [emoji3]

If what counts is the retro spirit, then one should stick with the basics, no? [emoji41]

Yeah, the green tinted Dizzy looked bad. Never really understood why they went with that over just using the plain white Dizzy from the Spectrum (but with red shoes/gloves). It would have looked so much better. Not really a fan of Crystal Kingdom at all, the graphics vary from ugly to mediocre and far too many of the game mechanics have been tweaked very much for the worse.

And I feel similarly about Wonderland Dizzy, the two character mechanic doesn't really work for me (it'd have been better if you could swap at will and each carry different items) and it seems stupidly hard. The number of times you "die" from silly little things seems insane (even if they don't all count as proper deaths). And jumping seems incredibly awkward, even worse than CKD, which makes progressing a rather frustrating exercise.

Hard to understand why the developers kept porting games directly from Spectrum although every single port ended up inferior on the Amstrad.

Not really. The goal of these companies was to make money. Time is money, so the quickest cheapest way was the best solution.

You're right. That's probably why CPC library is so full of crappy titles comparing to the competing 8 bits, despite having so powerful insides. C64 games have always been made so professionally. Speccy titles  have been made with so much love and care. While our CPC has been left in limbo :(

I know right :) There are a lot more too (I'm big fan of Rick Dangerous 2) but pls focus on what I'm trying to say: CPC library has great titles but infested with much greater number of crappy ports than any 8bit micros of its era.

Bryce

The CPC wasn't the only system to suffer from bad ports.

Oh my goodness, isn't that the truth. I've got the MSX and the Einstein on the phone here - they want their Speccy port complaints back, Carnivac! ;)

dodogildo

I've an idea. I'm considering to start a project.  A comprehensive list of crappies from CPC library (not only the ports)  :) This way I may live through a catharsis and get rid of the trauma from my teenage years :) :)

Strictly speaking the Dizzy games were ported from the Amstrad to other machines. Although they were obviously designed with the limitations of the Speccy in mind.

TFM

That's very true! Always thought they ARE Speccy ports. They just luck that way: Screen format, GFX etc.

So how come they got the handsome white egg with red gloves while we got stuck with the green one? Haha
