Hello guys!

Anyone knows of a piece of software (Windows-runnable preferably, but Linux will do too) that will look at an image and output a list of what colours are uses together with the number of pixels having each colour?

Thanks!

tastefulmrship

I, personally, use PSP7 as it has a COUNT COLORS USED option! ^_^ It then can decrease to 16, 4 or 2 depending on the need.

Carnivius

Here's a web based tool from Pixel Joint they often use to check submissions to the site.   Counts all the colours and lists them all with values and such.   Doesn't seem to have how many pixels per colour but it does have percentages so it must be working them out somehow.  At the bottom it says to contact the coder if you have any requests or questions.

oops I used your avatar to test it out and left it in the address. :P

Heh, another PSP7 user.  It's from the year 2000 but I still use it.  It all went a bit too photoshoppy for my tastes after that.  And still works fine on modern systems and loads instantly with little memory usage.

Hm, PSP7 may be an overkill for my purposes, but will check it out, thanks...

That online tool looks perfect - I fired an email to the devn asking for pixel count, let's see!

Thanks guys :)

Gryzor

Erm... but in PSP7 the Count Colors Used only returns the number of colors used (duh), not the pixels/color!

MacDeath

not even sure some application would count the number of pixels/colours...

Perhaps a twisted use of TileStudio ?

Why would you need this ?

Gryzor

Ah yes, good question. I've started doing this and, as you can imagine, knowing how many pixels each color has is very useful in planning...

TileStudio seems very complicated for this. Took a look, couldn't find such an option...

Ah, I thought it might be that. Never done it myself but loads of people have made bead thingies out of my graphics.  Particularly the Doctor Who sprites I do but also some other random things of mine.

Even my Carnivac avatar I use on most forums (and used to use here before choosing something more CPC project-related) was recreated in beads by a guy in Australia, framed and hung on his living room wall.  The original image was 64x64 pixels which is 4096 total beads.   I still just can't get over how these people like to spend all that time and effort turning my lil graphics into physical artwork.  Is crazy but I feel somewhat flattered.

Heheheh actually just yesterday I was looking at your gfx in search of inspiration :D

Yeah, I was going to buy some from guys that make them regularly and then I said, hang on, why not do it myself? It's a nice pastime, it turns out... so far I've only done some SMS sprites for my woman (Alex Kidd FTW!), today I'm doing the CPC Gryzor sprite...

You robocop avatar would look great as well...

the number of stuff used could really go into a huge number quite fast.

imagine a 192x256 Mode0 full screen graphic... provided you have mode0 ratio beads it would do 49152 ones... 98304 if you only have 1/1 ratio beads... ouch...

Also need to find accurate palette.
here the CPC is nice because somewhat simple and straight palette So I guess you can find colours that somewhat match it.

also this thread makes me get consciousness or the huge numbers of pixels a pixel artist have to push on a screen... wow...
finally I pushed a lot of pixels into stuffs despite not being very productive.

Not sure if I can find the proper hues to make "the drive belt exorcism" in beads.  :D
Damn PLUS.. Not sure C64 is popular amongst Bead-ironing pixelers. 16 shades of grey an shit... sound like an erotic best seller.

Gryzor

Yeah, I realised fast that you need lots of time and beads to make the simplest stuff! The Alex Kidd sprite has 600 pixels alone, and it's small and simple. Do a scene? Phew!!!

MacDeath

Gryzor, stop this madness... outsource this to child exploitation somewhere in Asia and just continue to manage CPCwiki so well.
Life is too short !

Gryzor

Gotta tell you, it soothes my nerves :D So, fewer bans!

(of course after a few hours hunched over a bucket of beads, tweezers in hand, your neck is as stiff as a rock, but that's another thing)

Carnivius

I couldn't do it.   Actual pixel art is one thing but beads are a total other exercise in patience and concetration.   I tend to stay away from physical arts and crafts (other than some sketching and also painting up action figures usually movie Transformers to look more 'real')  because I need the safety of an 'UNDO' button. :P

I guess there may be way to craft some "beads printer" to work on a CPC modified to have the 8bit printer port... Bryce ? Toto ? ;D

@Carnivac :
Oh you paint your transformers ? those repainted toys can look lovely.
I used to paint Warhammer models... have thouzands unpainted and no proper workplace for this anymore. ???
Sadly.
very delicate activity.

Pixel arting (splashing in my case) is fairly easier with modern tools but a complete piece in fullscreen can really take a few days of solid work either.
took me something like 3-5 whole days and nights to actually produce "the drivebelt exorcism ritual".

With your style, it must be quite a lot of work.

I hear you. But, some can create, some can copy. The apex of my handcraft creativity was several years ago, long winters of assembling and painting WWII aircraft and ships, so...

Oh, there's also an undo feature with beads: start over :D

I'm not a professional (some of those guys make a fortune buying Transformers, painting them up, improving articulation on hands and necks and stuff and then selling to rich collectors for thousands) but I like to spruce up my own figures to make them look more like the metallic detailed CGI of the movies rather than the cheap looking plastic of the toys.

Here's one I did of the recent Age of Exctinction Voyager Class Evasion Optimus Prime.   I felt the original one (shown on left) looked like a shoddy cheap knock off so wanted to add a lot more paint work and bring out the actually nicely sculped details.   The flame decals are stickers from ReproLabels (I'm not good enough to paint those neatly, especially with the pinstripe outline on the flames).   I'm much happier with the figure now and it's one of my favourites.

Dunno if you seen already, @Gryzor but the PJ tool got updated and addressed changed.

Thanks mate! I've been talking with both developers (of the original and this version) and they notified me of the change in address...

I got the sources and I modified the script to output the number of pixels, *however* the current dev told me that if you actually leave your cursor over a colour in the percentages list it will tell you the number of pixels for that colour in a pop-up :)

Yep it says that in the bit at the top.  :)

Oh, he added it, cool :) Actually it was not a new feature but I told him it was rather impossible to find :D
