Title: How much did compilers etc cost in the 80s?
Post by: sno0ks on 23:54, 25 July 18

I had an Amstrad when I was a kid, but can't remember/wasn't aware of prices of software apart from things like Dizzy for £2.99 (might be off by 0.04 there).  ;D

I read that Hisoft C, for example, was cheap. But how cheap was it and relative to what?

Thanks for any insights!

Hi snoOks,

I think both Amstrad Action and Amstrad Computer User have been scanned and are available from the Wiki.  If not, the internet archive should have copies. If you get the time check the early years 84 - 86, the adverts in them would probably be your best bet for that kind of info.

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks Peter, good shout. I found a review in Amstrad Computer User, Issue 10, 1985 page 21 + 22.

www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/ACU_Issue_10,_1985

   Hisoft C - Cassette £34.95, Disc £39.95

Following this it says:
QuoteRemember that an equivalent product for almost all other machines will cost will over £150.

Thanks for the hint!

Hisoft Pascal was also £34.95 on Tape & £39.95 for Disc, which is a bargain considering does some things better than Turbo Pascal 3. The Hisoft Pascal Guide to Pascal is another £14.95, though I've never laid my eyes on one, which makes me wonder if it was ever written. The information I've got here comes from ACU Nov 1985 page 21, the tutorial guide is also mentioned in the AMSOFT Winter Catalog 84/85 (all that information is on the Hisoft Pascal page on the Wiki (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Hisoft_Pascal_4T)).

Some C compilers were up to 4 digits, some special languages up to several thousand. Mostly they were around 100 bucks.
