Making screen memory not visible on the sides?

I find it can still be worth using compiled sprites (what I still call them!) for small things like score and other character updates on a score panel, or small sprites like bullets, even if the larger sprites are handled more traditionally.  It might only save a couple of scan lines, but who wants to spend more scan lines than they have to updating the score! ;)
