Hi,

After buying an Acorn Electron (am I allowed to say that here!) it got me thinking about my childhood and the fun I used to have on the (families!!!) 464.  Now, back in the day when I had more hair and slimmer waistline I remember being captivated by the type-ins in the Amstrad Computer User magazine or maybe it was Amstrad Action, I can't remember.  Well anyway, coming from a family of 7 meant that the time spent bashing away for most of the night (before bedtime) was a once a week affair so it was cherished time and when the game I was bashing in didn't work, I generally had no time left to try and debug it.  Well that's why I'm writing this now, ironically touch-typing, which would have benefited me greatly back in 84/85; there was a game which was a     port of er*bert or Q'bert to Commodore 64 users which I could never get to run properly, it always stopped working after the first jump down from the top step.

Question is, does anyone know which magazine this listing was in or does anyone know where I can get this listing from so that I can finally debug it (albeit in an emulator)

Would settle an old score  :D

The only Q'bert clone type-in I know about is a game called Englebert by J. Keneally, which was published in an Aussie magazine, though wouldn't surprise me if it was from an UK mag cause I saw it being reviewed in Public Image in AA. I can scan it in for you if you want and you can type it in. I remember typing it in and getting it to work so it is reliable source code.  :)
* Using the old Amstrad Languages :D   * with the Firmware :P
* I also like to problem solve code in BASIC :)   * And type-in Type-Ins! :D

Of course if it really is Englebert, then there's little reason to type it in yourself. Just download the DSK image from CPC-Power:

Engelbert seems to be the culprit but I remember that the type-in was actually raw machine code and not basic.  But hey, thanks for your time and I'm looking forward to reminiscing some more on this forum.

I've just checked through the ACU type-ins project and can't find an Er*Bert clone. (but did find some olde shyte I'd forgotten about)
Maybe it was from AA afterall?!?! I do remember having a clone of Er*Bert from a magazine and Englebert looks too 'professional' to me!

There was definitely one in an early magazine, probably Computing with the Amstrad.

Are you referring to the amazing CUBE WARS?

The CWTA 1988 compilation disc A is attached below. Just type RUN"CUBEWARS"

@Johnny Olsen & @ervin
Sirs, out of curiosity; how many issues of CWTA have been collated onto .dsk files? And are they set out in the same way we did for ACU issues?

I was reponsible for collating the 1988 CWTA type-ins years ago - 2002 or 2003? I can't remember exactly. I never got round to collating them for any other years, though. Also, some of the type-ins may not exactly match what was printed in the magazine, as I liked to add commands such as RANDOMIZE TIME:RANDOMIZE RND to ensure randomness, and PAPER 0:PEN 1 to ensure the default pen and paper were used on running a program.

There was a little bit of M/C in Priz which was in AA60, this information though I think was room data, it's kind of like Engelbert (using square boxes in the rooms), though it's more of a Spindizzy clone, the rest of the program was done in basic though!  :laugh:  Priz is also available on the Internet (NVG) as well. If it's full on M/C then it's possibly from CWTA though, I'm only familiar with the Galactic Invaders M/C game from it though!  :(

Hi CP/M User

Please scan the Listing From the Aussie magazine.

I've scanned in the relevant program, unfortunately I cannot attach it here which comes in a PDF over 2Mb, I can send it off to CPC-Power which maybe able to print it (unsure if they'll take programs from under Authors with slightly different names), though it's the virtually the same program which originally came in a Your Computer June 1985 Magazine which is on CPC-Power, the only advantage in having the copy from the Australian Magazine is the print quality of it which makes the program easier to read.

You can email it to me, upload it to the wiki itself, upload it to a file-sharing service, or - oh, what do you know, the attachment size limit here is 4MBs :D

Let's try to upload the pdf here...

[EDIT] Yay! It works fine now :)
