Title: RolandRadio 2020
Post by: RolandRadio on 21:08, 15 March 20
So i deleted the old RolandRadio homepage and set up a complpete new system - also a new stream and this little project is bringing much fun due to my corona-free-time :-)

I have set up a new parser, so everyone who is using an old link to get the actual playlist-data shall update and fetch the new values from here:
https://rolandradio.net/playlist/actual (https://rolandradio.net/playlist/actual)

Also the playlist is now working again and within the next weeks there will be hopefully much progress to the system. Also you now can (and should) register as an user to access the protected areas :-)

So i am trying to build a little community around the RolandRadio system.

Some of you are doing youtube videos - maybe we can integrate the audio track into RolandRadio? If you (whoever you are) are interested in doing that get in contact.

Are a few of you out there listening to RolandRadio once in a while? I would love to read about your experience and when you listen to RolandRadio. At work? while programming? Tell me!

Regards
Roland

Hi @RolandRadio (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2272) ,

You could open a Classical section using these:

https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/applications/the-advanced-music-studio-brandenburg-concertos-1-and-2/ (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/applications/the-advanced-music-studio-brandenburg-concertos-1-and-2/)

Most of the larger pieces might not be of much interest to listeners but some of the smaller pieces might be. Have a listen to the William Tell Overture or the Sabre Dance and see what you think.

Cheers,

Peter

I listen almost every day, using Winamp. I listened to the latest channel, no trouble (but none of the new music I recorded?) except the title of the songs which are changing every seconds.

That's a really nice idea.
Now I need to find someone who records that without humming and as audio files.
But I like the idea auf making a classical section to play Sunday's evening.

I have seen some tunes on the FTP Server yesterday. So I will try to import them into the automation maybe today if I remember how to do this :)

At 2nd April 2020 Roland radio exists since 5 years. Yay.

Oh. That's something new. Haven't had this problem before. Maybe some issue with the radio automation which generates the stream. I need to check this later. Maybe a restart will do the job.

I have a huge TODO list to do, but I can add that. However, I want FIRST to make sure that what I recorded is indeed use. So when I hear them on the radio, I'll know that :).

@ComSoft6128 (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2226) PM me pointers on the DSK with the music and the software (advanced music studio I guess ?) if you have them.

I have updated and restarted the streaming.rolandradio.net servers and now the bug with the title updates for every second seem to be gone. Homefully it stays stable. if not: inform me. Thank you.

Post by: ComSoft6128 on 16:19, 16 March 20
@Targhan (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=110) the YT videos are recorded using a 6128 Plus and the original software and music files - so no DSK files.
I can provide the files as MP3's by using 4K Video Downloader to strip the audio component if that suits?
Title: Re: RolandRadio 2020
Post by: RolandRadio on 17:47, 16 March 20
Problem on the YouTube-Files is that there is a bad humming on the audio, so we may not can filter this humming and it will be a pain in the ass for the audience to listen to these classic tunes if the rest on roland radio is clear and bright from its recording side.

so those classical tunes need to be recorded new and without any distortion if possible to keep up the high audio quality of RolandRadio.

Interesting.
Having compared the original file and the copy I've just downloaded from YT (128kbps) I hear no humming or distortion on either - just pure CPC music.  :D
Title: Re: RolandRadio 2020
Post by: RolandRadio on 18:39, 16 March 20
OK. i listened yesterday on youtube to some of the videos. Maybe the distortion is from my own equipment. Who knows.
can you send me the Mp3-File to info@rolandradio.net so i can check it? That will be great.
We also have an anonymous FTP-Server on upload.rolandradio.net for mass uploading
But to check the quality it will be great if you can just email me the mp3 file. Thank you for your help!

Have received your test files. Will listen to them later on me headset.
Thank you very much for the files.
I'd love to get more (all) of the classic CPC-tunes for RolandRadio. So there will than a special Show somwhere at the late weekend where we can sip a glass of wine while listening to Bach, Chopin, and maybe some Roudoudou :-)

And on a nice sunday evening there will be this announcement:

QuoteWelcome and a wonderful evening here at "classical music by homecomputer" on RolandRadio. Listen for one hour to the best classical compositions played by the Amstrad CPC Orchestra on only three channels. Be fascinated by the intoxicating world of classical music. Here on RolandRadio.net
Title: Re: RolandRadio 2020

The first file seems to be ok. But the Willem tell has a very bad distortion on the silent parts.
But maybe it's better than noting and we can filter that distortion out on the Roland radio broadcast system.
So if you have the time and want to rip those classical sounds I can add them to the station.

I have fixed the streaming servers homepage issues. Now everything seems to be ok.
But I will optimise the streams later on and maybe rename some of them or remove unnecessary formats or add some
I will open a separate thread about this here in the rr board.

Hi,

I have now listened to the original MP4 file created using the OSSC/Hauppauge Rocket and the MP3 version downloaded from YT - as far as I can tell they are identical - I hear no distortion.
Possibly you would be best using the original files and stripping the audio track yourself?

Thanks for the information.
As I am working hard on the new homepage and the radio automation system I sadly don't have the time to rip music so I would be very happy if you can provide the audio files if possible. Thank you in advance

OK,

I have published 37 YT music files so far which is too many for me to convert to MP3 format in a few days. If you select 10 of the files I will convert them this week. You will need to edit some of these files as a few are silent for the first few minutes (displaying screens/text files etc). Most of the files will be quite large (10MB>) so probably its best I create an account with Dropbox (or similar) to send them to you.

@ComSoft6128 (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2226) What I don't understand is that since you recorded from a real CPC, which don't you have the WAVs?

@RolandRadio (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2272) Seems to work fine! I didn't hear the new songs, but I'm sure I will eventually :).
Two suggestions:
- You should put the Mono stream on the front page too, because some people will use it (including me).
- The random algorithm is not great. I always hear the same songs. Lately I use a random on my local collections of my tracks and heard many songs I didn't remember and that I almost never heard on the radio.

Thanks for you great work!

@Targhan (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=110) The OSSC/Hauppauge Rocket combination creates MP4 files which I then upload to YT. If necessary, I then use 4K video Downloader to strip the audio content of the YT files - aside from MP3 the only other audio file options are MPA and OGG.

We can read nearly any audio file as long as they are not drmed. So it's no need to convert audio. I can test you audio formats here to check if your easiest way to save the audio files will run natively in our broadcasting system.

We have now a list of every title we have in our database. So you can search for the titles. If they are in the list. They have been played on the station. Our database contains around 2000 titles. Played have been around 1300 now. So the list is growing live as the titles are played.

Cool,

If you can select the first ten files I will convert them to MP3 and send them to you in a day or so. . I should be able to do this on a weekly basis until all the files have been transferred to you.

As i hope to get every classical sound from the cpc i dont bother where to start with. just select them as you like.

Hi,

Filezilla gives this error message when I use it - "You appear to be behind a NAT router. Please configure the passive mode settings and forward a range of ports in your router.
Warning: FTP over TLS is not enabled, users cannot securely log in."

So no Filezilla for me - I have sent you a link to a folder on my new Dropbox account and you will be able to download the files from there.

I have added the first 10 titles to our database. They are playing at the moment.
I love it.
i needed to trim them all and to use a humming filter but this worked like charm and the audio files are now in a very high quality. Normalized all and added to the database.
I can not wait to get more classical stuff :)
Thanky again

Glad you like them, I'll get another ten off to you Monday or Tuesday.
Is there anywhere on your site that you could show that these were transcribed to the CPC between 1987 - 89 by Rob Baxter?

I will add the credits to the database i am setting up at the moment. So this also will be a way to add more informations to a single title. I just am planning the database setup and what fields i think i may need.

Another quirk, I don't think the "musician session" announcement was heard (David Whitakker at 7 on Friday). Maybe all musician announcements are discarded?
Or maybe it is ok and I didn't hear it?

The shows are not listed at the moment on the homepage but configured and play.
If i check the playlist on https://rolandradio.net/playlist (https://rolandradio.net/playlist)
there is 1 hour between 19:00 and 20:00 only playing Whittaker.

Not every Artist played at the "Artist only"-Show has an own announcement. Due to lack of time years ago :-)
The only Shows with announcements are:
- Ben Daglish
- Johnatan Dunn
- Kangaroo MusiQue
- Targhan
- Tom & Jerry

Charles Callet and David Whittaker are not done yet. If you have a nice and funny text for their announcement: post it here

Title: Re: RolandRadio 2020

At the page https://rolandradio.net/titles (https://rolandradio.net/titles) you can find all the titles played within the last three days. Those are 1332 titles at the moment.

The database itself contains 1867 titles. So we are near to the state that every title is been played on RolandRadio which is in our database. At the moment the https://rolandradio.net/titles page is one large page - so you can easily search it for a title you have in mind and if its on this list it has been already played on RolandRadio. We have reset the list two days ago to get the duration of the whole title database and it seems that every title is played within 4 to 5 days.

I have listened to RolandRadio quite a lot lately, especially at around 11pm for at least one hour, mostly two (while coding, of course :)). I have already told you the shuffle algorithm was not good enough in my opinion. Now I have the proof! The same songs always come up (I still didn't hear the latest songs I uploaded).

What I did is very simple: thanks to your Playlist webpage, I copied/paste the yesterday's playlist, did the same today and compared the result. For one hour, here is the result:

Basically, most songs played at 11pm were ALSO broadcast yesterday at the same hour, but in different order!
Maybe your shuffle algorithm could be improved by... simplifying it? Maybe only prevent a song from being played if played 6 hours before or something like that and that's it? But that would be great if you could improve it! Thanks!

Hello,

I have 2 requests on top of what @Targhan (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=110) said :)

1. As a registered user, I would like to be able to request a song. Like, let's say, OK I'm in the mood of listening some tunes from Epsilon ; I can select few of them from Epsilon in the user-interface and they get queued. Once the "custom queue" (cf. user-requests) is done, you switch to the default playlist in place. Of course, the queue is visible to everyone, and we know who did the song request.

2. The white-only UI is a bit aggressive. Could you add a dark theme to it ? cf. user could switch to dark theme, info gets saved into a cookie (or in user's profile). Note that this is lower priority to me than 1.

Thank you  :)

First of all: The title database is not extensive enough to generate a lot of randomness in the selection of titles. But I take a look at the playlist generator. At the moment we produce the playlists once every hour for the following hour. Probably the results would be better if we generated the playlist for several hours or even days. I will try this.

First of all, I want to introduce some kind of rating, so that single titles can be voted up or down. From the resulting "Top-X" list I will then try to generate an external playlist that will randomly assemble the Top-X titles for an hour and then transfer it to radio automation so that we can run a "Top of the Bleeps" hit parade at a certain time on certain days. Vice versa, we can also use "Worst of the system playlist :-) If there is a need for it? Maybe in the morning at 03:00.

After this function has been implemented, I will develop a wish concert function, where registered users can choose their favourite titles. These will then - combined with other wishes - also be played at a certain time. Depending on how well this is received, we can of course expand this function and the way it is used. It needs some patience :-)

Regards

Roland

Your approach appears to be a bit complicated to me. Why not a pure, dummy random method for adding next songs in the queue ? Then just let users insert next song in the queue, when requested. No need of "top artists" and the likes (as much as I enjoy listening Targhan songs, I also want to be surprised with songs I never heard :-).
Note that this is a personal opinion, you do whatever you want with Roland Radio. It's already pretty good in its current state  :D

The problem with requests for individual titles, that - if we want to provide the radio station with Gema/BIEM titles for a remix show at some point in the future - according to the regulations of the collecting societies, these may not be played recognizably at a defined time. So a function like "play wish xy next" is not possible without getting any problems. Just the "what comes next" function alone will be something we would have to remove as soon as we play Gema/BIEM-listed music.

But I'll think of something to make this work satisfactorily. Maybe it will be possible to play desired tracks always at the beginning of the following hour and arrange the wishes randomly, so that an exact playback time cannot be guessed anymore.

Understood.

Then maybe that during the "special events", you could ignore user requests (with a message explaining that to the user) ?
(btw I like those events and it's a good idea to keep them)

Any news on the possible new playlist management?

I am working on it. You can find the progress of the project here https://rolandradio.net/aboutus/progress (https://rolandradio.net/aboutus/progress)

At the moment I am working on the streaming server to get this stable

I think the "max" wording in the title bar is misleading. It's as if the server only accepted "max" connections. You should rename it to "peak", like you did in the mini-player.

Oh, there are now "artist hours" like in the old radio?

i corrected and shortened the text a bit. its now like:

10 people (11 in peak) listening to

There always where "artist only" shows. that has not changed on the radio. But i may rethink the concept as it disturbs the randomness enormously

a few years ago a wiki admin decided to strip all my links and forbade me to put links in the footer. Thats the reason i never tried to put a link into the footer back to avoid being banned from the wiki over and over again :-) So i hope people are able to google things it they are interested in.

Just so you know, some people on THIS forum DID ask me the link to the radio. So yeah, I strongly advise putting the link to your signature :). People are lazy and wants IMMEDIATE information.
