Do I really need the floppy drive?
« on: 15:12, 28 April 21 »
My floppy drive doesn't work. I'm not sure if it's just the drive belt from the sounds it makes, it sounds like the motor is struggling. In any case, I've ordered the M4 Board for my 6128. So Would I really need a working floppy for anything, like running CP/M or games?

  • It's not broken, it just hasn't been fixed yet.

If the media / game is on a disk, then yes. Otherwise no.

Now you're answering your own question.

If you mean "Does a floppy need to be physically connected for any software to work" - Then the answer is: There are a few disk related programs that wait for a ready signal (which would no longer come if no drive is connected), but for everything else, they should work with a floppy drive being present.

For anything that does direct access to the FDC, you need a floppy drive (real or HxC/Gotek)
M4 support for DSK is limited to system calls.

Can't I play most games with the M4? The floppy is in there, it just doesn't work.

Just go for cracked/unprotected versions and they’ll play just fine on the M4.
