Title: DMP printer not being recognised by amstrad, but ok with old laptop
Post by: geebus on 15:18, 29 June 20
Hey folks. I got a DMP3160 a while back. It came with the box and everything that was in it originally.
I was testing it out and got it to print the test page (very dull due to the old ribbon) but it does print.
That is unless i try print from an amstrad CPC 464 or 6128. Somehow the amstrad doesn't see it.
I thought i'd test it in an old laptop i got (for making disks for the amstrads funnily enough) and it worked fine.
Is there something i'm not doing right? or is there possibly an issue with the amstrad not enabling the rom from the printer (if thats how it works).
I know there's some switches on the back of it, but I think they're for setting the location (i.e. £ sign or DM etc)
Any help would be appreciated.

Taking a look at the manual here (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/imgs/9/90/Amstrad_DMP3000%2CD3160%2CDMP3250di_User_Manual.pdf), it may be that you have the wrong cable for connecting the printer to the CPC or an invalid combination of switches.

Also, how are you testing it with the CPC?

There is no ROM to be seen by the connected computer  ;)
However the CPC is not managing the select_in pin on the centronics connector.
The DMP* has a switch to enable or disable this feature on DS2-5 according to the user manual.

I'm testing it with using LPRINT (getting a syntax error), and print #8, "test".
I have also loaded a document in mini office II and it doesn't find the printer.

My dad once bought a nonane 24 dot matrix printer back then and it didn't work on my 464 ...

After some discussion on the local computer shop they said we had to tape one pin on the printer port, made a photo, the tape is still there today

So i was reading the manual about the switches on the back.
Checked it over and moved 2-5 to the opposite to what it was. no change.I'm wondering if the connector isn't getting a good connection on either of my amstrads due to the edge connector being a bit old and crusty. So i'll clean one of them up a little and test it again.
I found out that my printer was set to USA mode so it would print # instead of £. But that was the only "error" i found.
