Replacing Amsdos with Parados (ROM 7) - downsides?

If I replace the Amsdos ROM in my 6128 with a Parados EPROM will there be any downsides? Or can I just go ahead and replace the IC?

I replaced the AmsDos rom in the 464 DDI-1 and it works beautifully. You'll just have the added /Drive command when you want to access the Parados command screen. If I recall the Wiki reads that the ParaDos Rom was a full replacement for Amsdos and was written around and included the Amsdos firmware.

I forgot to add. Hopefully your 6128 has the Amsdos Rom already in a socket for easy removal. My 6128 has Amsdos soldered directly to the motherboard ☹️

ParaDOS will not allow LOGO (both versions of CP/M) to run, because LOGO has some functions inside the AmsDOS ROM. Well, if you don't use LOGO then go on...

I was thinking of that already, but the question is why Amsdos if Parados is a full replacement. Is there any downside (except for Logo), like bigger memory footprint, incompatibilities with games etc.?

Actually I am looking into replacing the internal ROM with a mini-ROM board with 4 ROMs in a single Eprom. The core ROMs that I like to always have, even with no expansion attached. If there is no need to keep Amsdos in parallel to Parados, I would have space for 1 more ROM.

Have a look at the ROM listing, it's around 8 KB, so too much to mention them here.

BTW: I suggest you to use VaraDOS instead of ParaDOS, because it got the Vortex format activated already. And I mention this just because Vortex was (is!?) the standard format for 80 Track drives.

I will use a patched Parados where the standard format is 40 tracks. My normal use case is a Gotek with normal DSK images as B and rarely other formats.

Just did the same trick as squeekbox
not recommended - it works beautifully

• Find the DDI interface has a socket rom
• Source old untested 3.5" drives off ebay hoping at least one will work
• To test them hand type the quick format program http://dliapp.wizhut.com/blog/?p=54
• Mod the code to make it format B: instead of A: (ld de,00000h to 0001 or was it 0100)
• Get a XGECU T48 eprom programmer from ebay and some 16k Texas Instruments 27C chips
• Install the janky software it comes with, the TI chip was on the list and it programmed first try
• Parados!
