The Apple III, released in November 1980, was designed as a business-focused upgrade to the Apple II. It featured a 6502 processor running at 1.8 MHz, 128KB of RAM expandable to 512KB, a 6-bit DAC for sound, and an integrated 5.25-inch floppy disk drive.
Unlike the Apple II, it had a full keyboard with lowercase letters and a numeric keypad, and it featured an 80-column display.
However, its fanless design led to overheating, causing chips to loosen from the motherboard, resulting in frequent crashes. Apple later revised the hardware, but due to its early issues and high price, the Apple III failed in the market and was discontinued in 1984.

The Apple IIgs is equipped with a 65816 CPU, the 16-bit evolution of the 6502 CPU. It was released in september September 1986. The gs in the name stands for graphics and sound. It is equipped with superior graphics (640x200 in 4 colours, 320x200 in 16 colours, with 4096 colour palette), an high-end Ensoniq 32-voice soundchip, a separate keyboard and mouse, and a Macintosh-like Graphical User Interface.
