Squares

Do you remember what multiplication does?

Multiplicationadds equal groups or the same number repeatedly.

This is an example of a multiplication equation:

2 x 3=6

**2 **and **3 **are **factors.**

These are the **numbers that are being multiplied.**

**6 **is the **product**.Β

This is the **answer we got **when we multiplied the two factors.

π Now, there are times when **a number is multiplied by itself.**

Just like this example:

2 x 2=4

What are the factors?

That's right!

They're **2 **and **2.**

What is the product?

It's **4.**

**4 **is what we call a **square product.**

Asquare productis the answer we get when we multiply a number by itself.

Do you know why it's called a square product?

It's called a square product becausethe factors form a square in anarray.

Let's say we multiply **3 x 3.**

To create an array for these factors, we draw 3 rows of 3 objects.

π 3 x 3 **forms a square!**

What product do we get when we multiply 3 x 3?

That's correct!

We get 9!

3 x 3=9

9 is a square product. π

**Square products **are **usually just called ****squares.**

π **When a number is squared,** it means that it has been **multiplied to itself.**

Let's see if you know the squares of these numbers.

What is **4 squared**?

4 x 4=?

That's right!

It's 16!

What is **5 squared**?

5 x 5=?

You're correct!

It's 25!

Great job!

Here are the squares of numbers 6 to 12:

6 x 6 = 36

7 x 7 = 49

8 x 8 = 64

9 x 9 = 81

10 x 10 = 100

11 x 11 = 121

12 x 12 = 144

Great job learning about squares. Now why don't you try practice? πͺ
