Axel Foley is one of the best Police officers in Detroit, after a crazy attempt at bringing in a bunch of smugglers and completing the job (with a few minor scratches to the city on the way) he returns home to find his old friend in desperate need of help. He stole some bank bonds from a group who are now out to kill him and Axel is his only hope of staying alive, after returning home the next day Axel finds his friend dead and sets out for some serious vengeance in Beverly Hills.

Graphics

Beverly Hills Cop is just one of those movie licensed computer games that never made any kind of impact on any of the formats it was released on. The problems are apparent from the first moment you step foot into the game, graphics are either thin and tall (probably to fit more objects on screen at once) or fat and blocky (a little like MODE 0 in basic) but the troubles don?t end there. It would appear that the developers couldn?t care less if the games player could see everything on screen perfectly or not, the colours are washed and not well selected, Axel Foley soon becomes lost in a bunch of bright or dull colour, the levels are VERY poorly designed and as for speed - forget about it. This is one game that, coming from a large company, should not have this many problems but as anyone who has been playing games for a long time will tell you, movie licensed titles are usually complete shite.

Sound

Sound on the other hand is much better than the graphics, on all versions (including the CPC) the developers have managed to convert the much loved theme music to Beverly Hills Cop into a great sounding computer track. The in-game sounds themselves are also very active and contain just about enough to keep the player happy, in fact it probably contains a little too much info as you won?t be playing the game long enough to hear most of them anyway.

Gameplay

Gameplay is massively affected by the bad graphics that the game contains. Split over 4 sections which range from straight forward platform shooting action to car chases you would think the game had something to offer all game players, sadly as soon as the level of your choosing starts you will realise that you just wasted your pocket money.
The 4 sections are:

  • Warehouse (shoot-em-up)
  • Car Chase (Chase HQ style action)
  • Storm Mansion (Commando style shoot-em-up)
  • Inside Mansion (more of the same) The control system is a nightmare, Axel simply refuses to do what you tell him and if you decide to use the keyboard then you are in for one rough ride as the developers use a very strange set of keys by default. Add all this to piss poor colours (look at screen grab 1 which is taken from the Car Chase section of the game) and you can plainly see that Beverly Hills Cop is one hell of a nasty game. This is one that is certainly worth avoiding, if you purchased the game the first time then our hearts go out to you.
