ACE or "Air Combat Emulator" is a flight simulator for the 8-bit machines which sits you inside a very powerful craft indeed and your thinger is itching to press that trigger (providing you can get off the runway in the first place).

This style of game makes me yawn but I?ll try my best not to let it get in the way of this review, there?s no great story to this game and all you need to know is your flying and people are trying to shoot you out of the sky before you grab them, not only in the air either as some enemies are on ground level!

Graphics

Well having seen ACE on the ZX Spectrum I wasn?t very impressed by the Amstrad CPC version as it looks and feels just like the Spectrum version with virtually no extras what so ever. The only thing that looks different between the two is the introduction menus (not exactly ground breaking either). If you ever manage to get off the runway you?ll see some pretty basic but not bad looking enemies to shoot at including tanks on the ground, the colours are less than impressive with only green, blue and black on show for more of the game - red does make an appearance in the map though.

Sound

As this game was developed by Cascade we didn?t expect much sound so we were not exactly shocked when we started this game and heard next to nothing out of the speakers. The only half good noise is the explosion when you hit the ground or get shot down and even that sounds like the snowy static noise your TV produces - not exactly floor shaking.

Gameplay

While flight simulators in general are not exactly my idea of good fun in front of your computer (certainly not the Amstrad) some people did actually like this game so all we can say is if you like your flight/combat simulators this one might be worth checking out, if you?re a die-hard fan then certainly you?re welcome to download a copy.

There is nothing overly impresive about this game despite being written in 1989 but then again Cascade have yet to impress us on any score so we half expected it.
