Despite the promising look of the front cover offered by US Gold "Ace Of Aces" is not a 194x clone, for those that have never played any 194x game it?s a top down shoot-em-up and one which most people should have played before today.

Ace Of Aces takes on the more serious combat simulation style game with a hint of glamour and comedy, in our opinion it?s better than the ACE series by Cascade but still not overly exciting.

Graphics

Well the graphics certainly look and feel a lot better than Cascades ACE series and actually respond better to standard controls - we?ll look at this later. You are presented with a very nicely done menu system in which the instructor moves his stick up and down with the option you select, this is then followed by a great comic strip story showing the alarm sounding and you running into action. Once all this is over you are given a pretty dull but not bad looking cockpit layout and some very strange looking scenery that can only be described if you play the game for yourself of check screen grab 2.

Sound

During the comic book story you will hear the alarm sound, footsteps running into action and engine sounds which all add some depth to the story and keep the player interested. Once all this is over you are given some pretty basic but pretty active sounds in the game itself, we noticed that it was thundering in one scene (well lightning was flashing past) but we never heard the sound to accompany it. It?s not bad by any score but it could be a lot better than this and US Gold know it.

Gameplay

Now as we mentioned earlier the controls in Ace Of Aces are pretty standard as even those who don?t play a lot of flight simulators can grab hold of the joystick and take off without any problems or need to press 50 keys to do one task. This goes down well with the staff of CPC Zone because flight simulators usually have a habit of utilizing some very bad controls and assigning just about every key on your board with an action.

As we continue to mention we are not massive fans of flight simulators in general but Ace Of Aces certainly isn?t half as bad as some other 8-bit and even current games we have seen. Try it for yourselves, you never know you might like it.
