The sequel to one of the most beloved games of all times,Bubble Bobble,Rainbow Islands never really achieved the same amount of fame as its classic ancestor.
Nevertheless,it is an enjoyable platform game which guarantees a lot of fun to anyone who plays it. The arcade coin-op was very succesful and I?m sure it lined the pockets of Taitos distributers for quite some time to come, the computer conversions were also of a very high standard and Taito have always had a great reputation but will Rainbow Islands spoil that for them?
Lets find out.
Graphics
Graphics, they are full or colours, well designed and with pretty big sprites, especially the bosses. The conversion from the coin-op is brilliant, you will not be dissapointed.
Sound
The music, though,is the same for all the levels, except for the boss stages.
Gameplay
The storyline goes something like this: You play the role of Bub or Bob,the qute little dinosaurs that starred in Bubble Bobble. After defeating the evil witch which had transformed them into dinosaurs, they regained their human shape. Now,they attempt to help the people of the Rainbow Islands, where many monsters have appeared.
The gameplay is standard platform-type,you jump around platforms ,kill the monsters and pick up bonuses.Your main weapon is,uhhh,a...rainbow! Sure,it may not sound very strong, but you?ll be surprised with what you can do with it. First of all, if you shoot an enemy with it, he will be killed and leave a little bonus for you. You can always walk on the rainbows, thus getting to those hard-to-reach places. If you jump on a rainbow and collapse it,it will kill every enemy it touches while going down. So,you see,it?s a handy weapon after all! You can also enhance it by picking up red or yellow bottles, so that you can throw up to 3 rainbows and much faster than normal.
The Rainbow Islands are filled with various monsters, such as worms, spiders, trucks, helicopters, vampires etc. Every new level has a new challenge for the player,so you won?t get easily bored. If you manage to pick up 7 gems of a different colour (gems appear after killing an enemy, they are pretty rare though) in every level, you will gain access to secret levels! That should give you a motive to play the game again, even if you have finished it before.
