After what looks like a nuclear war in New York only a few people have survived, the city is in ruins and those that did survive aren?t exactly the kind of people you would class as friendly or would like living next door to you.

You also survived the fallout and decided to put an end to the robbery, murder and mugging that is going on downtown...someone has to do it so why not?

Graphics

After The War comes in 2 parts, the player can select which one he/she would like to play but for the purpose of this review we will be looking at part 1, the second part should be available in the review archive shortly.

When you look at the Graphics in After The War you will instantly recognise the game style as being similar to Capcoms arcade hit "Final Fight" even those that have never seen the arcade will no doubt recognise the style as it?s been used time and time again on multiple platforms. The characters are well drawn, coloured and animated throughout the game with no transparency problems or major graphical glitches. Backgrounds look stunning also as we get to view the fallen Statue Of Liberty and other desecrated areas of New York.

The only thing we would like to pick on is the fact that the same end of level boss attacks you over and over again plus his henchmen all look like clones - nothing overly distracting but I?m sure more characters would have fit on the tape/disk if the developers put a little more time into it.

Sound

As for sound, well we are presented with a nice piece of music at the start of the game (sadly this doesn?t follow through into the game itself) and we have have plenty of in-game sounds to listen to as we kick the living crap out of the bad guys of the wrecked New York city. Good stuff indeed!

Gameplay

The most important factor is gameplay, like Final Fight it uses the same style of scrolling beat-em-up with bad guys coming at you left right and center (no bad thing as the original kicked butt in the arcades) but also like Final Fight you are limited to the things your player can actually do, in this case - punch and punch lower, oh lets not forget the elbow.

Having said that the control system is easy enough, the gameplay isn?t too tough and the graphics and sound are superb, it won?t keep you entertained for longer than 30-40 minutes because of it?s incredibly small size but it?s good fun all around and I?m sure you?ll love it.
