Alex Higgins World Pool

Another of the Amsoft free games that was packaged with some of the machines here in the UK is Alex Higgins World Pool.
Yes set back in the day when this man was considered a legend, now he?s just "that Snooker player that smoked a lot" Gem Software decided to create a video game of this sporting/pub classic and attach Alex?s name to the title - it?s worked in the past so why not?
Anyway on with the review....
Graphics
Just like the previously reviewed World Snooker game Gem have stuck to the much more suited 2D approach to the game using an overhead view of the table. The graphics have been improved slightly by adding more colours to the balls but then again this is Pool and the balls are more colourful for a reason, like the original there is no que in the game and every thing is done by following a few prompts with your joystick, it?s not bad but we still prefer the que.
Sound
The sound system has also been slightly improved as we are now treated to some introduction music and in-game sounds when the balls clash against each other and when they fall down those tiny little holes (yes I know what they?re called) giving the game a more realistic feel.
Gameplay
The game itself is pretty simple to play, all you have to do is place the que ball, then set the direction you would like to hit the ball, set the spin and let if go. For anyone that doesn?t know the rules of Snooker we would advise that you either search the net for information OR just play the game anyway and learn by your mistakes, after all that?s how most of us got playing down the local pub.
As with the Snooker game starring our main man you?ll miss your pint of lager and looking like a prat when your girlfriend slaps you for looking at someone else in the bar but in some ways that can be seen as an advantage.
Alex Higgins World Pool is another great game by those freebie masters Amsoft and the legendary Gem Software that brought us great classics such as Oh Mummy! well worth playing if you ask us!
