As you load HAGAR onto your cpc / cpc emulator a fantastic opening screen greets you and as you look gobsmacked at the brilliant artwork you think this game is going to be a corker....

Unfortunately, while its a nice game, its not as good as you had hoped. Just another horizontal shoot em up.

Graphics

A horizontal split screen scroller with colourful and smooth styled graphics. Very similar to Beastial Warrior.

Speed is a little on the slow side but not jerky or off putting.

Well drawn background graphics and sprites.

Sound

In game music was ordinary and lack lusture but it has a good title soundtrack.

Gameplay

Far too simple this game is for anyone and any age. Simply move your HAGAR character left, right, or up (to jump) and press fire to kill the enemy birds and frogs and more by throwing tomahawks at them.

It really is that simple and as such has no real long term addictiveness, which is a shame because it looks and plays fine and just a few extra additions could have changed that.

You start with 9 lives which is really good and you also have an energy bar that decreases as you get hit by the enemies.

As you progress through the screens they get a little harder forcing you to jump over water and large holes - and that was as hard as it gets. Some jumps can be a little tricky and you loose a whole life if you fall in.

In most games the character sprite moves ontop / in front of the background graphics but in HAGAR your character sprite moves behind the background graphics wich is unusal. And perhaps the clouds are a little low as you can see from the pic below - it dosent make any difference to the gameplay its just quirky.
