Football is football isnt it? select a team of players to kick and head the ball against an opposition and shoot - GOAL.......

So many football / soccer games were released for the cpc - most notably was the Matchday franchise, Microprose soccer and Emlyn Hughes International football.

It seemed every software house (except Hewson) wanted to cash in on football games for the 8bits and adidas wanted to have a go and get their name on one....

Graphics

Small overhead view - much better and clourful than other cpc footbal titles that used the same method. The sprites are small but visible. Haven?t identified any colour clash as yet - each international team has their own colours.

Scrolling up or down is a little jerky but not too bad. Nothing spectacular for a football game but it does the job.

Some nice colours used and artwork performed.

Sound

A very nice tune plays throughout the game - quite impressive. The sliding tackle sound is rather interesting cause it sounds like a gun going off.

Gameplay

So what?s different about Adidas Championship Football from others ?

Well to be totally honest - not much.

The game starts off by selecting a one player match against the computer no 2 player games are available... real bummer but with one joystick port then its not really needed.

You then select your team which are only a selection of international countries. No friendly competitions here just select your world team and then the cpc will randomly put you into a group of four teams where you have to win games to earn points and progress your way through to winning the adidas world cup tournament.

At first the gameplay is really awkward - takes some time to get used to the control mechanism. It has similarities to Aspar Grand Prix Master.

To control the ball you must get your player behind the ball and hold down the key direction you want him to move but its really not that simple, you also need to hold down the fire button. The awkward part is passing the ball to team mates and shooting the ball. To do this you release the fire button and the ball travels, it really does take some time to master the control of the ball. At the left of screen is a red and green bar - hold down the fire button and the red bar rises - the higher it is the harder / longer you?ll kick the ball when you release the fire button. The green bar decreases when you are running with ball illustrating you slow down the further you hold the ball in possession.

Tackles can be performed but look out for the ref because he may book you or even send you off, the player who has been tackled really looks hurt too as he lays flat on the pitch with arms and legs stretched out.

About the game itself - the players and ball moves quite speedily enough, its a little tough at first but once you have the controls mastered it can become alot of fun - if you like soccer / football that is.
