Pin ?em to the base line, attack the net and volley the winner! You can play on grass as well as on clay and also indoor courts. And the selection doesn?t end there - play singles or doubles, select to play in all major tournaments such as Wimbledon, Davis Cup, French Open and many more. You can then make a racquet selection and that could win you the match!
Graphics
The loading screen is VERY well done and is a great computerised version of the cover art featured on the games packagaing. Once you get into the game the view is from a top-down perspective, meaning you basicaly get a birds-eye, from above view of the tennis court and the two players. As you might expect there is now no need for a high amount of detail and Ocean certainly kept things to a reasonable minimum, a good thing though as it really makes the game fly.
I love the fact that when you serve the ball, the camera zooms in and out of focus to give the impression of the ball flying up into the air, its a very nice touch. We even get to see the faithful ball boy run out to pick up the ball as fouls are served, great stuff! The way the camera follows the action about the court is also great and you couldn?t really ask for much more in this type of game.
All in all, a top-notch job on the graphical side of things for sure.
Sound
After the loading screen has been displayed we?re treated to a nice soundtrack by Sound Images, bizarre that a Tennis game would have any kind of music but nice none the less. It almost sounds like music that belongs to an action game such as Predator and not a game involving two grunting people wacking a ball at each other, but ah well.
In-game sound is pretty minimalistic but hey, this is a Tennis game and you really dont need a lot of sounds. Everything is in the right place though, from hitting the ball into the air to hearing it thud on the ground as you knock out your opponent, you couldn?t ask for more really.
Gameplay
Once the game has loaded you get the choice of either playing the tournament or having a practice game against either the computer or a second human player, you can also choose a racket type which, believe it or not, really does affect your overall game, so be careful. You can then select either a best of 3 type match or best of 5 followed by the type of court you want to play on. Phew! Ocean certainly did give you plenty of options to play with in this one.
The game plays brilliantly, its super fast, has a lot of nice graphical touches and even though its a top-down perspective game, it is very playable. I dont quite know how effective it would be in two player mode but playing against the computer is certainly a lot of fun. I?m not a Tennis fan, in fact I avoid anything and everything to do with the sport, but this little game had me playing for some time and thats quite a big thing to accomplish I reckon.
If you?re a fan of Tennis games then this is definitely one you should check out.
