Cybernoid

Here is a game that I had not heard of before, and I stummbled upon recently. The idea of the game is simple is theory, yet can take a bit of practise. It is a shoot-em-up game, where you control a space craft which can build up it?s shooting powers as you progress. The object is quite simply to collect as much cargo as you can (over 1500 unit points worth) within a certain time limit. You then progress to the next level.
The game is really impressive for a 1988 game, and I was truly astounded by it?s quality. I played Cybernoid II shortly afterwoods, which is also a highly polished game, but I will concentrate on the original Cybernoid for this review.
Graphics
Wow! The first thing that knocks you out about this game is the highly pollished graphics. The menu screen is simple, but makes good use of colour and uses a great font for the writing. On just seeing this for the first time I knew I was in for something special.
Entering the main game, the graphics live up to expectations. All the main character sprites are highly detailed, and the use of colour is quite increadible. Your ship looks and feels like a space-ship, and there are some pretty meaty explosions on screen that do not slow things down at all!
The information part of the screen is well laid out, and everything is simple to understand. Always handy for us old gamers!
Sound
There is a rather good little tune playing throughout the game, although you can turn this off if you want to. On top of that, you get the ingame sound-effects such as you firing your guns, plus of course all those lovely explosions.
Gameplay
This game is instantly playable from the moment you pick it up. There is a good variety of shooting involved, along with some simple maze elements which you have to negotiate.
The game is not a scroller, bit flick-screen, but this does not deter from the sometimes quite frantic action. It has a great learning curve on it, and once you picked up the idea?s of what you have to do it is great fun to play.
