Port Stanley is under attack by enemy battleships intent on destroying the port completely, only you can possible stand in there way and do as much damage to the opposition as possible in an attempt to block the assault and stand for your rights.
Or something like that, this is another of the Amsoft classic range that got shipped free with some Amstrad CPC computers and as you?ll see from the review below - it?s like being given a palace to live in and then Britney Spears as your live-in partner

Graphics

As with most Amsoft titles the graphics don?t really come close to the games that followed years later but as any true retro-game player will tell you it?s not just the graphics that make a great game. Having said that considering this game was released way back in 1985 it?s not as bad as some other 8-bit titles we have seen that were released a good few years later. You are looking out over the port of your battleship and can see the vague but pretty good shapes that represent the enemey, hit your "trigger button" (as Amsoft put it) and you?ll see a white cannon ball fly past and hit the enemy (sure it?s basic but cool none the less).

Sound

Sound is again on top form as Amsoft deliver the goods - remember this game is free and it could easily have no sound at all. There isn?t any intro music in the game and although it?s pretty limited in terms of in-game effects it still does the job and anything is better than nothing (in most cases anyway).

Gameplay

Gameplay is superb, although it looks as basic as you can get it offers many hours of highly addictive playability to anyone that sits in front of it. The idea is simple, aim your port at the oncoming enemy fleet and hit the fire button to sink them all, watch out for your damage indicator in the bottom left hand corner though and try to sink those that attack you before you yourself are swimming with the sharks.
As we mentioned earlier in the days of the CPC the graphical achievements didn?t really do much for the game, okay it?s nice if we see a game with near arcade quality sprites and colours but in the long run it does nothing to make the game great - you can?t judge a game by the cover. Assault On Port Stanley is another of Amsofts finest games and deserves to be in the hall of fame with many other great titles.
Grab this game now - you won?t regret it.
