ChinnyVision - Lemmings
« on: 20:48, 24 June 16 »
That game where a load animals follow each other over a cliff because some idiot told them to. Nope can't see where else that's happening today!

Anyway here's the CPC version mixed in with the Amiga, ST, PC (running on an Amstrad PC2086), SMS, Master System, Speccy and C64 versions.

Last full price standalone CPC game I purchased. Mid July 1990 at the Bournemouth Amstrad Centre!

Pity about the level code bug on the CPC. I spotted it very quickly so why did none of the play testers?

Yep Great Video, thanks Chinny.

Far be it from the CPC wiki to comment on Speccy ports, We wouldn't do that.

A mode 1 version could look awesome, just look at the lemmings part of Facehuggers Ultimate Megademo. 4 colour lemmings could have been awesome.

I would also point out that AA did publish the Multiface cheat to correct the Level Code bug in the very next issue after the review.

Thanks again

Craig

Didn't have a Multiface at that time. Shame there wasn't a type-in hack but guess the multi-load prevented that.

Congrats , much as I have conflict with some of your reviews , it is good to see you bringing good attention to the CPC. More Subtle bias needed though.
It's great to see Xyphoe knocking them out again to a true CPC star .Quality and skills

I think you may mean 1992?

My brother and I got caught in the hype about Lemmings at the time. Amstrad Action gave it their joint highest rating ever (97%), and my brother won his copy in a competition that CPC Attack! ran. :) Unfortunately it was the cassette version, which of course contained the password code bug. :(

My theory is that the bug was deliberately included in the four-level demo that appeared on an Amstrad Action covertape, and they forgot to remove it for the full release. Doh! :picard:

As CraigsBar has said, Face Hugger's Ultimate Megademo has a part which shows how good Lemmings could have looked if it was in MODE 1 - although having all the scenery in blue, green and white might not look so pretty!

As for the Spectrum version, it looks, erm... interesting. Shame it's not available for downloading on World of Spectrum. :(

I never understood why. It was sluggish and tedious compared to the other 8-bit versions. Also Mode 0 really didn't suit it. Sure it looked good but Lemmings is a pixel-perfect game in places and having wide pixels didn't work so great. It was OK for what it was but no way was it the best game on the CPC. Its a 70% game at best.

That demo looks great, having intelligent palette changes would make up for the limited number of colours. Maybe someone could remake Lemmings in Mode 1, or at least make a clone. I think its way beyond my skill level to attempt though. Maybe @MacDeath can mock up some screens.

Personally can't recall being bothered by the speed of the CPC version it didn't seem to be of note, And That was not from being sheltered from other versions from the gameboy and Amiga . I thought it was a decent game and enjoyed it. The thing I found annoying was the icon selecting .Once got to grips with that , the game had all the elements which were required to provide a taxing and thoughtful game..

Gryzor I am sorry ,not sure where to put this question . If you have a better place to put it?Please do.

LOL! Forget about the video review, this quote just owned the thread!

I never actually got to play the CPC version of this. By the time it got released, my interest had waned. There were fewer and fewer releases coming out for the CPC and I was getting a bit older and hitting the clubs, so video gaming took a back seat for me. I did end up playing the PC version of it a few years later and got stupidly hooked on it. I ended up getting back into Tetris again that year, which in turn ended in me dusting off the old 464 and playing Tetrix on it reigniting my interest in the Amstrad.

I enjoyed Lemmings a lot when I was a kid, both in the CPC and in the 8086 of my best friend (that is one of the testers of our text adventure, btw). It was either Mode 0 or CGA for us, little kids, but I must admit that the CGA version was, imho, better because it felt much more responsive and the higher resolution helped a lot. Amstrad sound, however, completely owned the beeps of the ancient PC

I played Lemmings on the Archimedes at school, which for all intents and purposes is identical to the Amiga. Maybe if the CPC version was new to me, I'd have appreciated it more but I just couldn't get on with it after playing the 16-bit version.

The best version of Lemmings however is an unofficial DS port:

Lemmings Project

It's got all the levels from original, Oh No!, Winter, ability to make your own, and various different control methods to suit your style of play. This is better than most commercial games on the DS too. Theres nearly 300 levels, I think its missing the Sunsoft levels from the Sega Megadrive version but they are easy enough to add with the level editor.

I think I've seen the Archie version in the mid 90's but am not able to run it myself as I don't have one. Was it a proper Psygnosis release or was it knocked out by Superior like Barbarian was?

It was a Psygnosis release, but coded by Krisalis software. It had all the same levels including the "special" levels with their "special" soundtracks too, which were not included on some versions.
