8-bit Memoirs

Current version of this page: v0.1

What is 8-bit Memoirs

8-bit Memoirs is meant to become a series of collections of stories about the computers and gaming consoles from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. The concept and first issue was developed by Roald "Mr.Lou" Strauss from 2012 to 2017. Issue #1 was released December 2017, and a bugfix version 1.1 was released in June 2018, also adding a lot of feature requests.

The idea behind the concept is to have many different people write their memoirs about the good old 8-bit era. Each issue of 8-bit Memoirs will therefor be written by a different author. The stories are all true, and written from the perspective of the child the author was at the time.

Each author decides which platform to target, and each issue will therefor be released for different platforms, depending on the preferences of the authors.

Issue #1 was created as a Blu-ray project. It's available as a freely downloadable ISO file that you can play on your PC using a software media player like VLC or Kodi. Or you can burn the ISO to a real Blu-ray Disc to play it with a hardware player like PlayStation 3 (or later) or Xbox One (or later). Issue #1 is also available as a "Collectors Edition" purchasable physical Blu-ray Disc. And an online version is also available to be streamed via HTTP or WebDAV with players like Kodi.

Future issues can be released for any platform you can think of. A website, an ePub3 eBook, a PDF, an Amstrad CPC DSK file. It's entirely up to the author of each issue. And then it's up to the readers to download and install a viewer for whatever format the author chose.

Why 8-bit Memoirs?

Mr.Lou created 8-bit Memoirs because of his urge to share his own stories. And that'll be the main reason why other authors will create future issues as well.

Regardless of being an author or a reader, 8-bit Memoirs is merely yet another way of spending time with our good old childhood computers, which we all enjoy so much. Writing your own issue will give you a much stronger dose of nostalgia than usual. And reading an issue will be fun, because you know you spent your time in front of the same (or similar) 8-bit computer at the same time too.

Issue #1 contains much more info about the project. It also contains guidelines for authors.
