Title: Alternatives to an original DDI-1 for a CPC-464?
Post by: duncan_bayne on 05:33, 30 August 12
Hi All,

I'm looking to add a drive to my CPC 464 - either a floppy drive or (even better) an SD-card based unit.

My question is: do I need to find an original Amstrad DDI-1 interface, or are there alternatives (kitsets / after-market, etc.)?

Yours,
Duncan

Unfortunately, you have to found a DDI-1 first.
Looking it's price, you may have better to bough a 6128 for the same. :)

The main advantages are :
- you can plug two drives. (3", 3"1/2, HxC)
- you get 128K RAM for playing all games and demo
- the expansion port is free for additional boards

In all cases, you can keep your 464 for playing your old tape games.

There is a device which is being worked on, where you can plug an sd card into an adaptor that goes into the printer port.
If you have the electronics knowledge you could make it.
The software would eventually allow you to load files from the sd card.
Not as flexible and compatible as a ddi-1 disc interface, but it will be great when it's done because it will be possible to load many files.

As a side note you can always use one of those cassette adaptors, connect it to a pc, and play the sound through the soundcard and into the amstrad.
I've done that and it works great.

This SD printer drive is a prototype since more than 6 months and not working for the final user.
I hope that it will be available as soon as possible too. :)

There's a DDI-1 on amibay at the moment together with a 256k DK Tronics memory expansion. Not sure if the chap would be willing to split?

Sure. Nice items.
For this price you can buy some 6128 too...  :-\
But, with luke, if the ROM is on a socket he can put Parados instead of Amsdos.
